It took nearly all of Laura’s willpower not to slam on the breaks. Instead, she slowed down before pulling off onto the side of the road. With a deep breath, she turned around in her seat to look at the boy in the back.
“I just said that I don’t want you dead, Silas,” she said firmly. “Okay? No more trying to get yourself killed. I. Want. You. Alive. Do you understand?”

She sighed. Her fingers flexed open and closed, though her hands never left the steering wheel. “But Silas, believe me, if I thought that it was best for you to die, I would have killed you myself.”
Perhaps not the best thing to say to a child, but given the circumstances… he could probably handle it.

She took a deep breath, glancing over her shoulder and giving the boy a smile. Maybe it would have been better if he had died, but they were past that point now. Too many lives had been lost for Silas to just die now.

“I… I was angry with you,” she admitted. “When I heard from Travis that getting rid of you would fix everything, I thought you would be a monster. Someone that did this all on purpose.”
