PRESIDENTIAL ELECTION 2022: TO POSTPONE OR TO PUSH FORTH?

     The Philippine election has always been a flop for years, with candidates ranging from famous celebrities and sports idols who are unworthy, to business tycoons turned politicians. It continues to lead headlines in local and international news agencies as it breaks silence and brings the noise to the stench of these “meme-worthy” candidates. As the 2022 election is fast approaching, future Presidential candidates have already been campaigning subtly before the Commission on Elections (COMELEC) directives in filling the Certificate of Candidacy (COC).

     However, this upcoming election seems to be facing several difficulties due to this COVID-19 the country is currently facing. COMELEC is finding ways to untangle this impediment but still hasn’t come up with firm solution for this situation. So how exactly will the election in 2022 be held? Will it be canceled, postponed or push forth?

     The country’s total COVID-19 case has reached 1.2 million and 20-thousand deaths as of the moment, May 2021. There is no instance that the Philippines has ever shown optimistic progress in flattening the curve; only further spike has been occurring. Although panic in the Filipino citizen has calmed down and many have seemingly adjusted in the new normal out of lack of option, it is still impossible to carelessly say that once 2022 Presidential Election comes, people may go out to cast their votes in their respective precincts. As much as the public looks forward to a new and better administration, the fact that this election puts everyone at risk cannot be denied. The reality is that these casualties are happening because of the incompetence of the government. There were many opportunities missed like the mass testing that could have avoided the gradual increase of cases.

     COVID-19 acts as a huge obstacle in this upcoming election. However, COMELEC has already released the schedule for the May 2022 general election. COMELEC spokesman, James Jimenez, pointed out that “people pushing for no-election scenario” worries them the most. Even so, this idea is unlikely to occur accounting the Omnibus Election Code which states that elections can be postponed – but not canceled – only for “any serious cause such as violence, terrorism, loss or destruction of election paraphernalia or records, force majeure, and other analogous causes of such a nature that the holding of a free, orderly, and honest election should become impossible.” The 1987 Constitution is also clear – “unless otherwise provided by law, the regular election for President and Vice-President shall be held on the second Monday of May.”

     No matter how severe the COVID-19 outburst may be in the following year, it has now become clear that presidential election and election in general will occur. The government can divide the voters into smaller batches to report and vote bringing the election into a little longer period of time but ensuring everyone’s safety. Proper sanitation and strict health protocols should be implemented and followed strictly. If people will let this election pass, they will also be losing their right to suffrage and their freedom – democracy; thus they will only contribute in helping the administration tighten its grip on power and authority.

     If the country does not subject itself to change any time soon, Filipinos will continue to be kept in the cage of incompetency it has been subjected to for years on end. With possible candidates now expressing their desire to run for office, the future may not be looking like the brightest; however, one step is still better than nothing. The foot of democracy must be put into use to move forward, leading the nation free from the invisible chokehold of tyranny.

Since I can’t seem to contact any local publications in our place, I decided to widen my horizon thus I made my research and found a publication online here at Ilocos Region. I found “The Ilocos Times” and I immediately messaged them if by any chance, they’re available for some interview regarding the history of their community newspaper.

Fortunately, few days later, the admin of their facebook page responded. Below is the proof of our conversation.

I was able to connect with Mr. Michael Esmino, the managing editor who has been working at the publication since 2003.

According to my research, the The Ilocos Times is the longest running community newspaper edited and published in Laoag, Ilocos Norte, Philippines over the past 67 years. The paper was founded in 1917 although it came out irregularly until October 23, 1957, when it became a weekly with 90% English and 10% Iloko, the vernacular of Northern Luzon, Philippines. The Ilocos Publishing Corporation, a family-owned entity having its own commercial printing facilities, publishes the paper. The website edition was constructed on October 2000 primarily aimed at catering to the local news and information needs of Ilocos Norte natives and other Ilocanos living abroad.

According to Mr. Esmino, the original founder escapes his memory but the acknowledged founder of the current edition of the paper is the late Judge Efren Ramos Sr . He mentioned that there were major changes that occurred all throughout their years of service. They’ve pretty much worked away from the office by 2015. The way journalists do their job remains – they still opt to be physically present at the scene even up until today, though because of the global pandemic we are currently experiencing, limitations were set. Meetings are done through video calls. They only get in-person meetings when they tackle sensitive issues. The nature of their news contents follows the traditional one before, but since they’ve gone mostly online these days, they had to make sure that people get to know as much details they can provide. The nature of the relationships between and among news organizations and their publics doesn’t only model one-way communication already, instead, it became an interactive process. In terms of technology, surely many has changed. From manual to high-tech ways, they’ve improved a lot. Nowadays, they already have their facebook page which is really responsive and very engaging to the public. They even do facebook lives and such. Overall, changes were evident through their years of working in the publication.

Furthermore, during our conversation, I was able to ask Mr. Esmino about how their publication went during the declaration of Martial Law . He told me that among all their news publications and journalism establishments, theirs was not ordered to shut down. They’ve continuously been working their papers out since 1957. He was able to send me a copy of their newspapers too which I shall be sharing in my blog.

I believe in our Almighty Father, as real to me as our mother Earth herself,

As real as the trees, the oceans, the skies; I consider as my wealth,

I open my heart and mind to feel the power of His love,

He brings me joy and happiness, He showers blessings from above.

I believe that love is the most dangerous thing in the world,

It can make a person feel alive yet it also kills and even burns,

Love can surely make everything that’s impossible possible,

But in an instant can change the magic of love into something horrible.

Despite its risks, my biggest flex is still loving people in the end,

I may stumble and fall but I could always begin again and again.

I believe communication means everything,

No matter what we do, wherever we go,

We need to communicate between the lines,

Learning this skill will help us grow.

Selfless is my middle name, service is my game,

This phrase simply means both parties tolerate but do not accept the opposing position. It is a resolution of a conflict which may be an argument or a debate.

Agreements to disagree can result from different perspectives. From the illustration itself, walking around to the other side - a metaphor for seeing the other person's view or belief - can clarify the source of the disagreement. We may prefer with the perspective we start with, but at least we understand why the other person sees things the way he/she does.
