Thanks to some amazing peeps on FR (and a well-timed Swipp trade appearing), I am not only free of the last five or so low-level Coli Familiars I’ve been chasing for two years*, I have a Diamond Talonclasp Pendant. Sometimes the community on this website utterly stuns me with how nice it can be.

* I still lack a few, but they’re recent adds that I don’t feel bad about continuing to chase. But when you’ve been failing to get a Hainu, which isn’t even supposedly a rarer drop, since November 2014, the thrill of the hunt wears a little thin.

I assume like ten of them will drop now.

The Twelve Months of Noctmas: January

This Night of the Nocturne on Flight Rising, I got 14 eggs.

14 Nocturne Eggs, completely separate from any reserves I had kicking around from last year. And I played a lot less this years than I did last year, because I got slammed by a combination of RL events and crappy health. Heck, I got eight of them out of about twenty chests in the space of one of the only evenings I could actually Coli grind. The RNG was just being the fickle, fickle beast it so often is.

So I bemusedly said to one friend that I could open one egg a month for the entire year and still have two left over to sell or raffle or donate or whatever, again ignoring last year's leftovers.

Rapidly this turned into something I actually wanted to do, so I hereby present:

THE TWELVE MONTHS OF NOCTMAS

In which every month, on a significant date, I will open an egg, scry it up, and debate its merits.

Obviously we begin right now, with a fresh-hatched New Year's Day baby.

In the First Month of Noctmas, the RNG gave to me:

A Saffron/Eggplant/Spearmint Earth Baby!

Oh dear.

I won't say that's a face only a mother could love. Skink Saffron picks up both blue tones and sufficiently dark ruddy-orange tones to go well with both the secondary and the eyes. Eggplant's a rare monochrome in Spinner, but picks up some greens in Toxin; okay, that's enough to coordinate all-around. But let's be honest: that was a Tert destined for Spine, always.

So put all those together on a breed that plays up Spine into something more like Streaks, and you get a pretty decent look:

She's actually kind of fun, but realistically, this kid's heading for Lightweaver, probably for VaLight's.

Even people who just like those damned coloring books will sooner or later find themselves on this road. I seriously considered asking for Prismacolors this Christmas and suddenly was like “Oh god, this is what it was like for all of my artist friends back in Elfwood.”

I’m not an artist, I’m a writer, and if I’d ever gotten, like, six personalized rejections from huge publishers saying they loved it BUT... in a row, I’d just be there going OMFG WHAT DO I HAVE TO DO TO GET PAST THE HUMP? HOW CAN I BE THIS CLOSE BUT THIS FAR AWAY? Getting a couple of that sort of thing is an encouragement: you’re doing great, you’ve almost made it! Getting six of the last eight months.... Just daymn.

Something I've noticed in Flight Rising’s Festival posts this past year, to my increasing bemusement.

Honorable Mention five out of the last six months? That’s a brutal case of always-the-bridesmaid. Crowcorvidae, you’ve got my sympathies. (They’re great designs, too! I first noticed because I wanted one to win.)

See what I want to know is, when I go online I find all these pictures of baby goats being adorable and friendly and chill, but every single time I go to Heather Houlahan’s farm for Goat Day not only do they all act like humans are the most terrifying thing ever, but they’ve got like a call-and-response of screams between whatever goat is being held and all the other baby goats in the pen. And given Heather, it’s not like they’re being abused or something. I demand less defective goat-babies.
