The Bookworm & The Cactus Friend - (2024)
Two artworks inspired by the works of Carl Spitzweg, The Bookworm and The Cactus Friend (Note: I drew the characters but the backgrounds are the ones from the original paintings with a small amount of reworking here and there)

The worst robbery of all times is that internationaly everybody calls the maestro Pau Casals by the spanish version of his name: Pablo. This is a shout out to any person of the world who might read this. Let's stop calling him Pablo Casals, he would have wanted to be known by his real name: Pau Casals!
Tumblr media

A new record: temperatures are so high, that yesterday Gavarda (a town in the Valencian Country) registered the highest temperature ever recorded in Europe in January: 30.7°C (87.26°F). This would usually be the expected temperature in early May. The previous record was set in 2021 (29.8°C in Alacant). We are record after record, and it's not good.
This adds on the drought that the Catalan Countries have been suffering for 3 years. We have water use restrictions and many farmers have lost the harvests for months because they're not allowed to water the fields. And there's no prospect for generous rain any time soon. Experts have been warning that for every degree Celsius that temperatures rise in the Mediterranean region, annual rain will reduce by 4%, and since we're a region that is already naturally prone to summer droughts, this will mean 20% less water resources.
The Mediterranean region is one of the places in the Earth that heats the most because of climate change. There will be 40% more days with extreme heat (days with temperatures higher than 35°C=95°F), which will have effects on health, particularly on open-air workers, and will suppose a 17% decrease in agriculture produce. That is, without counting rising sea levels.
The Mediterranean region is inhabited by 400-500 million people, out of which 150 million live on the coast. Experts calculate that the sea will have risen 1 meter (it's not out of the question that it might have risen even more if polluting emissions aren't reduced) by the end of the century. Considering that 37% Mediterranean coast is very low, on sea level, this means that this rise of the Mediterranean sea will put about 42 million people in extreme danger. One of the first victims will be (and is already suffering the early effects) the Delta of the Ebro river, a mostly-agricultural area in the South of Catalonia which is also a Biosphere reserve due to its great biodiversity.
And some people still say climate change isn't real 🤦

Angel Crowley: Well, if I was the one running it all, I'd like it if someone asked questions. Fresh point of view. You can't just create a universe, run it for a few thousand years, and then stop.
Angel Aziraphale: I like the pinky-blue bit in the corner of the… the nebula. Yes, it's very umm… ahhhhh! Um, but look, word to the wise, I'd hate to see you getting into any trouble.
Angel Crowley: Mm, thanks for your help. And thanks for your advice. I wouldn't worry though. How much trouble can I get into just for asking a few questions?
Here, during their first meeting Angel Crowley is sort of more naive than Angel Aziraphale who seems to sense more that questions will not be welcomed and afraid of God's reaction. 🥺

Nah, he's just like, "fuck it, I'm gonna describe this man in the most straight bro way ever"
Wnd then he's like: "omg, he's so handsome and pretty, and his hair, and his face, and his mouth *giggles* I wanna kiss him, no homo tho"
okay but I did not know that there is a story about f. scott fitzgerald nervously showing ernest hemingway his penis because zelda said he couldn’t satisfy a woman with it and ernest hemingway was like “lol no dude you’re fine”
what are the modernists even

So glad the MPs from outside of Scotland can just deny our democracy for all of eternity. That’s a really fun benefit of being part of the United Kingdom.

Vale, dada de cultura catalana del dia: la dansa de l'hereu riera.
Okay, Catalan culture fact of the day: the dance of heir riera
Bàsicament, segons la tradició, es posa una creu de fusta en equil·libri sobre un got de vi, i si aconsegueixes ballar tota la cançó sense vessar el vi beus gratis.
Basically, traditionally, a wood cross is balanced over a glass of wine, and if you dance the whole dance without spilling the wine you get free drink.
If I'm remembering correctly, the song talks about the legend of heir Riera. He was on the local festival (here we call it major party) of I don't know where when his fiancée got ill and he then prayed to God to cure her and when God did he grabbed the cross from the altar and he danced over it.

Preparations for the Sant Antoni festivity in Sa Pobla, Mallorca (Balearic Islands). Video by Som illencs on Instagram.
Sant Antoni (Saint Anthony's Day, 17th January) is a traditional festivity celebrated in many parts of the Catalan Countries with different elements related to the saint, often with the story of how Saint Anthony fought the demons.
In Mallorca, the most iconic element of this holiday is the demons. Each town has its own traditional costumes and caparrots (big hollow heads to be worn) worn by the people who represent the demons, who will dance around the town to the sound of traditional music.
A few weeks before the festivity, they start preparing. In the video you can see people from Sa Pobla playing traditional music and singing a song about Saint Anthony's story while walking to the church, where the people who will be the demons next year are decided through a raffle (many people want to be the demons and there's not place to allow everyone).

I hate the hypocresy on the concept of booktok!
It's supposed to be about promoting books and sharing reads but it's just the same 15 books over and over again! It's just about popular books and all written by people from USA, Britain or Canada.
I'm sorry but that's not representative of anything. Of course I enjoy international books and the hunger games is one of my favourite sagas. But half of what I read is local product which is incredible and really needs to be promoted. And so I get the feeling that people don't post other books and Booktok is just about buying the popular books and not about promoting literary diversity and books who are from other places in the world.
