Post-Defeat of Chuck in Inherit the Earth, Jack is off to become the new God, and the Winchesters are left to pick up the pieces. Only Jack's unannounced changes to the universe have Sam and Dean apparently unemployed and still stumped as to how to rescue Cas ... Sam doesn’t put up much of a fight, he flips the laptop back open and Dean sees himself sitting on the floor, in the dungeon and-oh God the Dean on the floor is openly sobbing. Which means Sam already saw- Dean slams the laptop closed, “Why are you watching that?” “I just thought-” Sam doesn’t finish his sentence, starts a different one. “I’m so sorry, Dean.” “Don’t,” Dean pleads, “Don’t be sorry. We’re going to fix this. You and me and Jack, we are going to get him back.” Sam nods, wiping at his face, “Yeah. Of course we are. We will.” Dean hates how much his voice shakes when he asks, “You really watched-?” “Sorry,” Sam says, and this time he finishes the sentence, “I thought if I just saw The Empty again I might see something I was missing.” “Did you?” “Yes.” Sam doesn’t sound like he’s talking about a solution to the Cas problem. And sure enough, “I saw Cas. And for the first time in a long time, I saw you.”

But when Dean steps through that rift a second time forty years later after living a whole life in love with Cas, and finds himself and Cas right back in the bunker where they started, Cas doesn’t reciprocate his love this time around for reasons he can’t even begin to fathom. Heartbroken, they still have to find a way to defeat Chuck and hopefully find their way back together.
