Rimmer thinks about Christmas and eats some cookies, Lister and him have a chat.

Rimmer couldn’t sleep. This wasn't an unusual occurrence, since acquiring his hard-light even just lying in bed felt too overwhelming. He turned over again, on his side, and looked out to the bunkroom. His eyes landed on the plate of cookies and glass of milk (probably dog milk) Lister had left out. His reasoning was that it made him think of home– though Rimmer knew he hadn’t even done the tradition while he was on earth,but he decided not to say anything. Io only knows why, somewhere in the back of his mind told him it was because he never had that either.
A tear slid down his cheek, this wasn’t unusual either, he put it down to tiredness. Maybe just one cookie wouldn’t hurt… He slowly got up, put his slippers on, and crept to the bunkroom table. He sat down tentatively, and just stared at the cookies for a while then he looked up at where Lister was asleep. Tears were still slowly sliding down his cheeks effortlessly. He carefully picked up a cookie, just a small one from the outside, and nibbled at it.
Eventually, he looked down at a half-empty plate, he really hadn’t meant to eat so much. Now Lister would know, he started to sob, this could ruin Lister’s Christmas.
“Rimmer?” he heard a distant voice say and he just grunted in reply.
Suddenly he felt a hand on his back and he looked up, startled. “Listy,” he gasped, voice hoarse.
“Rimmer man, why you crying?” Lister asked. Rimmer just looked at the plate guiltily. “What, The cookies? Are they bad? Oh don’t tell me you had the milk with it!”
“I didn’t mean to eat them,” Rimmer mumbled.
“Rimmer, it doesn’t matter. You can have them!”
“But.. isn’t it ruining your christmas?”
“Look, I don’t really get what’s got you so wound up, but of course not!” Lister said, picking up a cookie himself. “Just shame we can’t have the milk, ey?” Rimmer nodded his head.
Lister finished his share of the cookies rather quickly, “These are good!” He exclaimed. Rimmer looked up at Lister, who was perched on the table, and rested his head against his arm before putting his arms around his middle. “What’s this for?” Lister asked while putting his hand gently on the back of Rimmer’s head. Rimmer didn’t answer and just snuggled up further into him, he had never been one for physical touch but he needed it tonight.
“Tell me about your perfect Christmas Listy,” Rimmer eventually whispered.
“Then, or now?”
“Whenever,”
“Well, I suppose it’d just be us.”
“Us?”
“Me and you.”
“Kryten and the cat?”
“Just you. You can be a smeghead at times but you understand, even when you say you don’t. Cat and Kryten, I don’t think they do, and that’s okay. But sometimes I wish I could be away from it all.”
“What else would there be?”
“Proper milk, more cookies, mistletoe…” Rimmer caught on to what Lister meant.
“Who says there needs to be mistletoe?” He said, gently bringing Lister off the table.
“I suppose you’re right,” Lister smiled, and leant down to peck Rimmer’s lips. Rimmer pulled him onto him and gave him a second, longer kiss.
“I love you Listy,” he said, his hand on Lister’s cheek.
“I love you too.” He smiled, “Hey, there’s one cookie left, wanna share?” he asked, snapping it in half and offering one piece to Rimmer.

“Hey, Rimmer, want a mince pie?” Lister asked, holding one out.
Rimmer looked down at Lister’s hand, he had felt slightly off all day. Christmas had always seemed to make him miserable, and he rather thought being dead would solve that. Until Lister had the brilliant idea to celebrate Christmas– he wasn’t even sure if it was the right season!
Rimmer had been in an unfocused state all day, Lister had noticed. So when he offered Rimmer the mince pie it came as a surprise when Rimmer just looked, got up, and walked away. He stared for a minute, slightly upset, before following him to the bunkroom.
Rimmer was sat on his bunk and barely looked at Lister when he walked in. Something about it all just made Lister feel so sad for the man, but it also annoyed him. It was something he had felt since they first met, but Lister desperately hoped It wouldn’t be an issue today. Not after he finally felt up to trying to do this and feel normal. Lister broke the silence, not sure how to set the tone he ended up a strange mix of gentle, annoyed, and melancholic.
“You know your problem Rimmer? You’re just like..” Lister waved his hand next to his trying to remember the name “.. what was that old guy called? The one who don’t like Christmas.”
“Scrooge?” Rimmer answered, mildly insulted. He could celebrate Christmas! He just… didn’t know how.
“Nah, that other one.” Lister looked down in thought for a moment. “The Grinch!”
Rimmer just shook his head. How could Lister compare the two?
“Wait. Who is this ‘Scrooge’ guy anyway?” Lister asked, confused, as he sat down beside Rimmer.
Rimmer stared at Lister, A Christmas Carol was a classic! Of course he had barely read it either… but he had watched the Muppets Christmas Carol which was based on it.
“He was an uptight git who refused to celebrate Christmas and had three ghosts come to taunt him!”
“Ohhhh” Lister said, still not really getting it. “Well you’re like him then.”
“What? How?!”
“Rimmer. You refuse to celebrate Christmas, you just freaked out because I offered you a mince pie!” Lister stated, beginning to get mildly frustrated with it all. Could Rimmer not just enjoy one thing? He just wanted to celebrate Christmas, and be normal.
“Well- well, uh, yes I did. Maybe I thought it was poisoned!” Rimmer scrambled for an excuse.
“Rimmer, you’re dead.”
“Well you don’t need to remind me of that!” he curled himself up slightly “Maybe I’m just not used to you being nice to me?”
“Is that what this is Rimmer?”
“What?”
“You, being all miserable. Like this Scrooge guy or whatever. Did you ever celebrate Christmas?”
“Of course I did! Why would I not?”
“Because of your smegged up parents? I don’t know.”
“Well..” Rimmer turned away from Lister. God, why did he alway screw everything up? He promised himself he’d get through this ‘Christmas’ okay.
“Look, Rimmer, you don’t have to say any more. But please let me have this.”
“I’ll try, it’s just. Not easy for me.”
“I know.”
“You know Listy, even Scrooge did manage to celebrate Christmas in the end.” Rimmer gave Lister a small smile.
“Come on, Kryten’s made dinner.” Lister gave Rimmer a smile back and got up to walk to the door.
“Listy?”
“Yeah?”
“Merry Christmas.”
“Merry Christmas.”

Very out of the blue but would anyone be interested if I started selling my art? I might try to do commissions or make a red bubble/etsy or something. It’ll mostly be red dwarf (not just Rimmer) but I’ll probably do brittas too.
