So I have a question for all the other genderfluid people out there. Do you have a male name and a female name, or would that be too confusing? I LOVE my name (Abby, short for Abigail) on my feminine days, but on my really masculine days I get really bad dysphoria about it. I'm thinking of going by Gail on my masculine days (again short for Abigail but more masculine). What do you guys think? Too confusing?

Sometimes I wish that I was better at communication. I often feel like people take me too seriously. I’m not a serious person. I don’t like hurting people’s feelings. I’m just a dumb ass without a filter. Why must I make more mistakes when I’m trying my hardest to fit in? Being called out over my own obliviousness somehow makes it worse. Like if I was aware from the start I could have done something… Now I feel like it’s already too late. People form opinions of others quickly and I’m not comfortable with walking on eggshells around anyone. That just makes me feel more awkward than I normally do. ;___; I was slowly starting to come to the conclusion that people didn’t like me when conversations would die when I was around. Oh boy… Well this sucks. Now I just feel terrible.

You know, whenever I think of the Assault led on Varian in “Secret of the Sundrop” and how they treated him, it always makes me cringe. In your own words, why do you think the Assault led on Varian in “Secret of the Sundrop” was wrong?

Honestly everything that happened in the second half of season 1 regarding Varian and the mains makes me cringe. But in my own words, the assault on Varian was wrong because of many reasons.
1) Varian is a recently orphaned child. His entire support system has been torn from the hinges. His father, the only adult in his house and his only provider, is incased and therefore incapacitated. His village has been evacuated. Varian lives alone, without proper income, provision, food, and shelter, in an area wracked by disaster and in constant danger because of that disaster still.
2) Varian has already been abused by the authorities and the king himself. As an orphan, the adults (aka the royals) are supposed to give him food, shelter, supervision, literally anything to help him get by . And each and every royal fails at this. Frederic instead sends masked, ARMED men to an orphan’s house, chases him out of the house to the point that he can’t contact anyone directly without them cornering or possibly beating him up, and even lets a false rumor about Varian spread so that he can’t get help from people. He runs around homeless, possibly starving, recently traumatized, and unspeakably poor. He has to hide away and physically can’t ask for help.
3) When the mains find out about how Varian was abused and has been on the run for his life, they rush to capture Varian and hand him over to Frederic. Despite knowing about Frederic’s abuses. They want Varian to be abused further.
4) As a child, Varian has the basic human right to not be arrested unjustly, to not be hounded and physically endangered constantly, to not be expected to shoulder the responsibility of the kingdom because he is a child. But yes, the mains will constantly do all of these things to him. And yet we’re supposed to root for them.
5) Varian only kidnaps the queen because there was no other way of ensuring the royals’ involvement. He couldn’t take Rapunzel’s help in TAR, because Rapunzel demonstrated that she couldn’t and wouldn’t stand up to her father and she couldn’t protect Varian from her father’s abuse. Plus, Eugene and Cass rushed in to arrest him. No one feels sympathy for his situation, no one gives a damn about the fact that he is an orphan who has no other way of surviving the unjust tyranny. Rapunzel and the gang agree to hound up on, beat up, and turn in an orphan to the tyrant to be abused further.
6) The gang led an OFFENSIVE. Not a defense. An OFFENSIVE. An armed, planned, military offensive against Varian when he made no explicit threat to their kingdom. He in fact warned them and told them that they had to help him now-because they hadn’t been helping him before. Frederic made explicit threats to harm Varian before this, whereas Varian only sent warning signals. The mains support the tyrannical King Frederic by silently standing by and letting him rile-up what is akin to a LYNCHING mob to storm a 14-year-old’s village and home. If Varian had actually led an attack on Corona and its citizens, this would have been warranted. But he didn’t. Feral Ruddiger was only released inside the palace grounds to target the guards who made Varian homeless, the birthday gift was to remind Rapunzel to get off her ass and help him because all she did after TAR and SIT and COMPLAIN about victim-blaming Varian. And the mains were fine with leaving Varian to be homeless and abused even after finding out about his situation UNTIL he gave them that gift.
7) Frederic and Rapunzel were prepared to beat Varian up. Rapunzel led Frederic to Varian’s house, and was going to stand by as her father quite possibly strangled Varian (as evidence by Frederic picking up and wrangling plushie Varian. That is unforgivable.
Abuse is abuse. It doesn’t matter if the victim can fight back. Just because Varian is able to stand on his own doesn’t mean he should have-he was stripped of his basic rights by adults who have the mind of children, and continuously abused indirectly and directly until they had a practical use for him again. In being the adults who refused to help the poor, impoverished orphan, the mains are all abusive in Varian situation-even Eugene who had no power. They don’t bother extending a hand, they don’t bother giving him the respect or basic human decency Varian deserves.
Throughout season 1 and season 3, Varian, as a child, get manipulated and abused by authority. It’s Frederic and Rapunzel’s fault that he was in the situation to begin with, but we’re supposed to cheer them on when they lead an armed assault on an orphan who has tried to survive Frederic’s abuses.
I would have felt better if literally any of the mains owned up to it-but they don’t. They put Varian down for it, victim-blame him continuously for trying to survive when THEY ARE THE ONES WHO LED THE OFFENSIVE AND WANTED HIM THROWN IN JAIL IN THE FIRST PLACE. The mains wanted him thrown in jail, and then they complained when Varian was manipulated by an adult terrorist he was forced to be in a cell with. And it was Rapunzel’s decision as much as Frederic’s-she watched her friend get hauled out and taken away in chains, but instead of assuring Varian that she would get to the bottom of things, she lets her abusive dad handle the situation again and steals Varian’s research to go on an adventure.
The worst part of all this is that there were many alternative ways to handle Varian’s situation, but the mains jump to the worst possible-they are more powerful than Varian in every way, and they take advantage of that to put him down and throw him this way and that.
They could have
1) Sent men/people to check up on Varian after the storm
2) Sent men/people to check up on Varian after TAR
3) Rapunzel and the gang could have tried to talk her father out of using brute force and brought a battalion just in case, but came to Old Corona and called out for Varian to accept their apology and their efforts first.
4) Literally anything other than an armed offensive against an orphan.
The mains putting Varian in a situation, refusing to help him when he gets in trouble for it, and then ganging up on him when he tries to survive, is like telling a child to stand next to a hacking machine, berating them when they accidentally get their arm cut off, letting them get kicked around for trying to ask for help, and then gathering your friends to beat them up because you don’t like it when they ask you to help them. Because that’s almost literally what happens in Varian’s case.

The problem with making Varian the villain of season 1 and how it did Rapunzel dirty when she deserved better
It’s that he had a motivation that actually tied in with Rapunzel’s destiny. Like his goals don’t oppose Rapunzel. But in order for him to look like a bad guy, he has to have a goal that opposes Rapunzel-which is why season 1 forces making saving Quirin look like a bad thing in Rapunzel’s eyes when saving Quirin and saving Corona is effectively the same thing, and then excuses Frederic for his greater crimes.
I don’t hate Rapunzel. She’s my third or fourth favorite in the show so far, and this isn’t meant to justify what was done in season 1. Rapunzel didn’t deserve to be attacked or terrorized, but I feel the need to point all this out for the sake of how her character was actually destroyed in season 1 just because the writers desperately needed Varian to be the villain instead of Frederic…

The kingdom courtyard was lit with a warm light. Not a single normally dark crook was left untouched. Lanterns hung under the sky. Laughter and music filled the night.
A farewell party was being thrown, the guest of honor? Cassandra, the ex-handmaiden, ex-guard, and ex-traitor. (how the title of traitor could be removed so casually was a mystery to Varian)
The Royal Engineer stood at the gates of the party, feeling sick to his stomach. Upon arriving, he gave Cassandra a small parting gift, a pleasant goodbye, and then proceeded to leave. Ruddiger was trotting by his heels.
With his mind clouded with troubling thoughts, he sat down under a large tree, just a stroll away from all the buzz of the party. His chest felt thick and achingly uncomfortable, so he decided on calming himself before returning to his chambers.
“I wouldn’t be able to enjoy the party,” he told his raccoon friend. “I’m so- so angry at Cassandra. I just can’t stand to see her like this.”
“Yeah, I’m sad to see her leave too.”
“Rapunzel!” he chuckled nervously, “I didn’t hear you coming.” The boy was scared for a moment, thinking maybe she overheard his feelings about her best friend, but that thought faded quickly at her warm smile. In this time, he noticed his companion scampering off to meet his Royal guard, horse friend.
“It’s strange, don’t you think? I’m so happy she’s finding her own destiny, but it’s sad to see her go.”
In the long second that passed, Varian struggled to chide himself into agreeing with her.
“Ah, well ‘happy’ is a bit of a stretch.” He winced at his own words.
It was only ment to be a flick at first, a dart in an attempt to vaguely catch her expression, but the shocked and cold look in the princess’s eyes, made him freeze. Dang it Varian! Why would you say that?
Throat suddenly tense, he forced out his next words. “Don’t get me wrong! Cassandra deserves a happy future.”
“Varian…” her tone, biting. A subtle warning, but he didn’t understand its origin, so boy kept going.
“Well…by how the story was told, the part that I heard anyway, Cass was only sorry after she lost,“ Varian quipped very matter-of-factly.
He waited, wanting her to tell him there was more to it, but Rapunzel stayed silent.
“And I get it. I get that when I lost, I went down on a bitter note, I was angry. I-I hated you and I had to be stopped. But when Cass lost,” his voice strained, “well, you hugged it out-”
Here, Rapunzel was quick to reply. “Of course,” Her eyes watched him carefully, her tongue sharp. “Varian, Cass is my best friend. If you’re saying-”
“Welll what about ME?” he cut in. “Sorry, but I was alone, and my only consultant was a raccoon. Everyone else turned their backs on me! On top of that, you were supposed to be my friend!”
“Varian,” her tone was scolding and urgent. Like a hasty attempt to clean up a mess. “you know I couldn’t help you! Corona was in a state of crisis! I wasn’t able to just leave.”
“That’s not- That is not what I’m talking about, Rapunzel. I was on my own. I did a lot of bad things, but I was alone, and you looked at me like I was some sort of monster, Rapunzel. I had Ruddiger, but even then, there was no one who believed I was still in there. No one came to pull me back to sanity.”
“I-” he wasn’t done.
“You had an undying faith for Cassandra. I’ve seen it. You always believed she’d come back.”
“Cass is my best friend, of course I never gave up on her.”
Varian felt his eyebrow twitch at her words. “How is that- How is that fair!? You’re telling me, if my dad got caught in the amber a little later in the year, if we shared more ‘bonding’ moments, I wouldn’t have ended up in prison?”
“Varian!” she looked bewildered, betrayed by this very conversation. “I had NO control over what happened. My dad was the king. And you- I know my dad can be harsh…but that’s just how-”
“Yeah and you left me with him. You can’t possibly believe there was nothing you could do.”
“I didn’t ask to be a princess, Varian. I was locked in a tower for 18 years of my life. Back then, I was new and unprepared. I’m human, I’m sorry I make mistakes.”
His response was slow, and quiet. “Yeah? Well, I was fourteen and I’m sorry I made mistakes.”
Her once chearful demeaned from aproaching him was gone. Now, her face was red and set in a frustrated scowl. The teen’s eyes widened, thinking back on everything he said. The words too far crossed his mind. Unclenching his teeth, he gripped his knees in an uneased manner.
“Look, Rapunzel, I know things have changed since my arrest. You are different from your dad, and I trust your decisions. I do. But I can’t forget how I fought. How hard I had to fight to pull myself away from that dark, awful place I was in. How I had to do it alone. Cass, she attacked us, kidnapped me, and almost killed you and Eugene. I can’t be the judge of whose crimes were worse, but all I know is she did nothing to win back your favor. In fact! She never lost it! And- It’s not fair. Cass is more personal to you, I cannot in any way change that. It just- It hurts. It’s not fair.”
The princess ran a hand down her face, tired and wanting to get away. “I’m sorry you went through what you did and that you feel this way, but like you said, ‘things have changed.’ You can’t take your anger out on Cass for what you did in the past. And I can’t make that go away,” she paused, regret on her face. “but I’m glad we had this talk.”
Is she sorry? Guess, that’s up for debate.
