Harfang, son of Cygne, and his partner Fiyodr, the Titan
He's Aven's father, he comes from a long lign of Dragon Knights
Aven looks so much like him, just... without the solid build and imposing aura Dragon Knights typically come with.
Harfang and Fiyodr died on the battlefield during Aven's early twenties. They had a complicated relationship but it still shook him up.

After a few days/weeks under a Dragon Knight's apprenticeship the "dragon's trial" begins, and the future knight must overcome it by his own strength. If he does, his bond with his dragon will protect him from illnesses and poison the stronger it grows.
The explanation is that dragons are actually deadly toxic to humans. Daily contact with them will create a strong physical reaction- but if went through (and you must be strong-willed and strong-bodies enough for it) will desensitize the individual to most poisons, even more so the longer they keep this daily contact. It's a mix of scientific and magic processes that makes one a Dragon Knight. (That said, even a seasoned Dragon Knight could risk his life were he to ingest dragon meat. Not that this isn't a huge taboo.)
On an other note, Aven getting the shit beaten out of him during his apprenticeship did not make him an exemplary Knight of the Sun Crown.

Visuals for Ju Shi Keu and Sun Yin
When a human uses their innate magic, a black diamond-shaped mark appears on the middle of their chest- this is where the terms "black magic" and "black mage" used in the Sun Kingdom come from.
(left) Ju Shi Keu- black mage, under the influence of the Cursed King.
Her family was tricked by faefolk and abandonned her. She grew an affinity for magic and desire for power and knowledge promised by the worshippers of the Cursed King. She's the one who used black magic on Aven when he was captured, accidentally sharing both their memories to each other.
(right) Sun Yin- black mage, chief of the Three Lakes Alliance
He was taught magic by a mysterious ageless mage residing in a secret fae pass. His strength, wit and ambition allowed him to amass a following consequent enough for him to form alliances no one could have believed in. His men freed Aven from the Cursed King's clutches and he used him to get in the good graces of the Sun Kingdom.
I want to believe these two had a past together somehow. Sun Yin's men were looking for Ju Shi Keu when they found Aven. Was she a pawn, was she an ally, a friend, a comrade? Sun Yin helped/allowed Aven to use magic to save her from the Cursed King instead of destroying what it made of her. Maybe it means something. Or maybe letting a Dragon Knight of the Sun Crown get disgraced for cause of black magic use was a move towards the Sun Kingdom's end.

Additional fun facts about homunculus Husha:
-it doesn't have most "normal" internal organs, it's mostly magical meat with black blood around an arcane token (it's a bit like the golems just with more internal structure)
-it doesn't have a heartbeat, doesn't breathe or eat.
-its voice is just magically produced in its mouth. it doesn't need to move their mouth to vocalize
-even though it has "barbie doll" anatomy (nothing down there to hide, really) people will still press it to wear clothes 🙄

I finally (got help) slapping Wordpress into shape and Runaway to the Stars is now releasing as a public webcomic! Thank you so much for your support over the years, and sticking with me while I'm slowly chewing my way through this book. I'm very excited to share this story! It'll be updating every Tuesday, Thursday, and Saturday thanks to the massive Patreon backlog. Patreon will continue to update as I finish pages, which happens on a sporadic non-schedule.
