“    it’s  why  i’m  here,    ”    they  snap  on  impulse.    perhaps  it’s  the  panic──    that  moment,    where  the  ground  beneath  their  feet  had  just  barely  given  way,    had  launched  their  mind  into  the  emotion  without  a  second  thought.    too  accustomed,    maybe,    to  the  unpredictable  nature  of  the  depths  beneath.    (    &.    still,    devoid  of  that  fear  ordinary  people  have.    )    a  heartbeat  passes,    two,    before  she  deflates    &.    looks  away  from  the  yaksha,    eyes  set  firmly  on  the  gaping  maw,    inviting.    beckoning.    promising.

“    my  research,    it    [ … ]    haven’t  you──    haven’t  you  ever  wondered  about  it?    what  lies  beneath,    i  mean.    ”

xiao bites back a snarky retort- but regardless, chooses silently offers his own weight as support for her to steady her feet.  the mining of the chasm has turned the grass a sickly green-yellow, and the golden seal that locks off the chasm only offers him a meager sense of security.

he follows their gaze- into the maw, and a chill runs up his spine, and he breaks his look away from the chasm, staring at a distant cat shaped cloud. his back feels like pins and needles- a phantom pain.

there’s a pause. “ i’ve been down there before. ” well, not in the past half-millennia, but he’s never been all that fond of the chasm, or really, just caves in general. he despised the way they felt like a never ending, interconnected, looping cage. how easy it was to get lost ( he would never be trapped in a cage again. ) “ it’s just . . . rocks and ores ? really, other than plausterite- i have no real reason to travel underground, and even then- i haven’t needed any plausterite in over a millennia and a half. ”
