In Descent, Jonas Quinn risks his life to save SG-1 by swimming into a flooded section of the mothership and releasing the controls allowing our heroes access to the ship's landing bay. “Corin Nemec is able to hold his breath for over a minute-and-a-half, which surprised the hell out of all of us,” laughs producer Peter DeLuise, who also directed the episode. “I was holding my breath while watching him and I couldn't believe how long he was able to stay under the water.” Paul Mullie continues, “Peter shot this take that followed Corin all the way down the corridor. He swam into the room and started playing with these controls. Corin moved a bunch of discs around and then he swam around to the other side and did the same thing. It was one continuous shot and it lasted almost two minutes. We said, 'We have to use this shot. There is no way the audiences are going to believe that he did this unless we show an uninterrupted take. Unfortunately, one of the discs fell out of Corin's hand, so there's a moment in the episode where we had to cut away to do an insert. It's going to look like we tried to strech the scene out so that it would seem more heroic that his character stayed underwater for that long, but, in fact, Corin actually did.” (TV Zone Special #46)

One of my favorite Stargate hobbies is watching the actors turn their faces away so they don't laugh and ruin the shot when RDA ad libs.

So… seeing and reblogging the AT10 photos brought up some memories of AT10. In particular this one:

At the very first panel, after greeting us and some small talk she started talking about how she’d been really nervous, prior to the event. Not the kind of nervousness she usually experiences before these events and at the beginning of the panel, something else. Hence, she had been asking herself, why this particular time felt so different - realising that it was because they (Amanda as well as Gabit) had said that it would probably be their last event.

She did have moments, leading up to this weekend, where she had “woken up in a panic in the middle of the night”, not knowing why at first. …but soon she realised that… (At that point, she started crying and her voice was breaking. She wasn’t able to finish the sentence and instead looked to the little table behind her on her right and then in Julia’s direction.)

“I need tissues…” (A fan threw a pack of tissues onto the stage, which made everyone laugh. Amanda picked it up.) “Anyway, what I realised was that I don’t know how to possibly pay you guys back…”

She repeated that she doesn’t know how to pay it back and that she was grateful for “what you have given to me”. “To Amanda, the actress and to Amanda, the human being.” “Thank you for your incredible generosity”. Still very emotional, she also expressed the same sentiment for the G4, saying that she would never be able to pay them back.

Again, she reiterated that what she’d realised is that she doesn’t know how to pay us back.

It’s moments like these that make me love her even more. She’s so genuinely humble and even after all these years doesn’t take anything for granted and gets totally emotional, out of gratitude.

The reason I find Stargate sg1 as such a comfort show though is because it’s earth as we know it, but expanded to include the sci-fi? If that makes sense? Like Star Trek, Star Wars, Farscape, and Babylon 5 are all great, but to mentally put myself in those universes I’m giving up the comfort of my own universe as it is now. Those shows don’t expand our world for sci-fi, they replace it with sci-fi. If you’re mentally in Star Trek’s universe, you are so far removed from everything you know about real life. What I’m trying to say is: Sg1 is the ultimate comfort sci-fi because, at any point, you can leave the sci-fi and be at your own home in a world you understand. That make sense?
