Crowd attacks Nazi HQ

MELBOURNE, Sunday - Members of the National Socialist Party were in hiding tonight after a riot which wrecked their headquarters in Carlton this afternoon. An angry crowd of more than 500 stormed the Nazi headquarters in Nicholson Street and smashed through the plateglass front window and door. Four men were later arrested and police took possession of two loaded shotguns and an automatic .22 calibre rifle found on the premises. One police officer was pushed through the broken window as the crowd surged forward to rip down signs bearing party slogans and swastikas. Trouble flared about 3 pm, when the stormtrooper-dressed members of the party failed to arrive on the banks of the Yarra for an organised rally. Members of the Yarra bank crowd, many tattooed with German con- centration camp numbers, marched and drove to Nicholson Street. They hurled stones, soft drink cans and fruit through the already broken front window of the headquarters. Stormtroopers who stood at the door of their headquarters and taunted the crowd locked themselves inside, on police advice. Screaming, hysterical women in the surging crowd shouted obscenities at the party members and yelled, "Murderers, rapists." A 24-hour police guard has been placed on the building following threats of bombing and further damage.
