Our needs for food are often entangled with our need for love and understanding. Comfort eating may bring short-term gains but is detrimental to our emotional well-being as well as our physical health. It interferes with the processing of our feelings, which is the only way to really move them, while overloading the digestive system, creating problems throughout the body.
To avoid comfort eating, practice eating with awareness. Apply principles of mindfulness to the business of eating. Mindful eating begins even before the process of cooking. Plan your meals and shop for the groceries in advance. You can always have a treat food (not entire meal) that you like and relish it thoroughly. When having food, be aware of every morsel you hold and eat. Take time to complete your meal in not less than 15 minutes. 15 minutes is what the body takes to understand if it is full or not. This will help you avoid over-eating as well as prevent comfort eating.
