It is easier to find gold than one’s self. We spend the most parts of our lives in masks, working to project a self we think others will love, and hiding the self we think others won’t like. Identity is not what our passports say or the languages we speak or who we sleep with. Fundamentally, we are the person we become when we think there’s no one watching. I was surprised how engaged they were with a body of work from a world that is very different from theirs. They were rather sad when they saw the photo of the spilled chips. My son loves his chips and was rather heartbroken for whoever’s chips it was. At some point, someone tickled someone and so I had to stop them before the book became a weapon of assault or defense. Yesterday, I gave toffees to some kids. One of them made the moment special. Some said thank you when they received it, others had to be prompted. But this one child decided one thank you wasn't enough so when I was leaving, she screamed a loud thank you at me with the biggest smile. If I'd had a million toffees, I'd have given them all to her. Gratitude can be so rare even among adults. I'm not saying adults don't say thank you. Most do with their lips but gratitude is 1% words, 9% thought, and 90% action. Many live as if someone owes them. Ungrateful people are like leaking well. The more of yourself you empty into them, the faster they dry up. When you tolerate them, you'll both end up dry. And they'll make you feel they are dry because you are Inadequate. The Opposite of Gratitude is not Ingratitude but Entitlement. Just as we don't thank one who returns stuff they borrowed from us, entitled people see no reason to thank you for giving them "what is theirs".
