"Beifong, wait," Pema said as she stood.
She reached under the bed into the storage space and dragged out a large bag, it landed on the mattress with a low thud when she tossed it up there. Pema rifled through the contents and pulled out a plush blanket. She tore a neat strip from it, folded it over a couple times, and approached Lin. "If you put this where the strap is digging into your neck, it should help. May I?" Pema asked, hands up at the ready to put the fabric under the shoulder strap of Lin's sling.
Tenzin sighed. "Thank you for telling me."
Pema turned her head up at him as he approached and kissed her gently on the forehead next to her bangs. She saw when he pulled back that his hands had moved to hold her shoulders, but he never placed them down.
"I'll go get the kids to the medical officer. Let's talk later, alright?"
Pema nodded and watched him shuffle past Lin to leave. She looked away from the doorway and wiped her face again to make sure it was free of tears. She sniffled once more before speaking. "Is there anything I can do for you, Beifong?"

Pema gasped when she felt something on her shoulder. It was just Tenzin, of course it was. "Are you okay?" he asked while slowly removing his hand, "You've been standing there for a while."
She looked back down at Rohan's crib to see his sleeping face again. "I'm fine, honey."
"Sit with me." He gently took her hands and brought her to the small bed with him. "What's wrong?" Pema worried her lip between her teeth and looked down. Tenzin moved to cup her cheek in his hand and she flinched away. He slowly lowered his hands into his lap. "Something happened. Talk to me, Pema."
"I'm sorry." She reached out to hold his hands and lace their fingers together. "Its just that... at the arena... I saw--Amon came into my cell and threatened me."
Tenzin went still. "What happened?"
"He--I'm sorry." Pema sniffled and blinked back her tears. "He took Rohan from me and started saying all of these terrible things--"
A knock sounded at the door and they both turned to the sound.
"I'll get it." Tenzin sighed and stood to answer the door. Pema remained seated and quickly wiped her tears away.

Nova stood tall with their hands behind their back and surveyed the group. Before him were teenagers that seemed depressed, children of varying energy levels, and an older woman with scars and an obvious injury. An odd bunch, but nothing could be unexpected from Commander Bumi.
"Everyone must report to the med bay before the day is finished." He informed them all. "We'll be in close quarters for this journey, and I can't have the crew getting sick because one of you accidentally brought the stomach bug with you. It'll be a quick, non-invasive physical."
As Master Nova spoke, Meelo laid in his cot and played with a stone figure of a flying bison. His enthusiastic sound effects ranged from hushed whispers to yells that mimicked cartoonish explosions.
"Does this child belong to you?" Nova asked of Lin.

Bumi carried Rohan as he brought Pema, Tenzin, and the kids below deck. The children picked their bunks excitedly. Jinora pointedly steered Meelo away from picking the bunk under Asami and convinced him to take the middle bunk under Ikki and above her.
While the kids settled in, Bumi brought Pema and Tenzin to the commander's quarters where they would be staying for the duration of the trip. The room was small, but private. The bed was hardly bigger than single-wide, but Pema knew she wouldn't mind. Being close to Tenzin after recent events was something she was looking forward to. There was just enough room next to the bed for Rohan's crib.
"This is amazing Bumi, thank you." Pema smiled at her brother-in-law's kindness. "But where are you going to stay?"
"I'll be out in the shared bunks with the kids," he said with a large smile on his face, completely smitten by the new nephew in his arms. "That's no place for a mariner this young, now is it?" Rohan smiled and cooed, fidgeting in his swaddle. "If there isn't enough room for all of you in here," he said looking from Rohan to Pema. "Then there's still more than enough room for my little brother out with us common folk." He gave Tenzin a small smirk.
Pema put her hand on Tenzin's arm to stop him from saying something he might regret. "Thank you, Bumi. I'll let you know if Rohan and I need the space to ourselves."
Tenzin frowned. "Pema!"

Pema raised an eyebrow at Lin when she saw her smirk in the rear view mirror. The older woman was clearly enjoying this more than she was. She kept one hand flat on Tenzin's chest and the other on his shoulder as they drove.
"I'm not so sure 'uncalled for' is accurate, honey." Pema frowned, thinking of the long days and nights he'd been pulling trying to help the people in the camps. She glanced out the window and smiled nervously at some nearby pedestrians, hoping they wouldn't look too close and see what was going on. "We'll untie you soon, okay?"
Lin easily maneuvered Tenzin into the back seat of her vehicle so his head and shoulders rested on Pema’s lap.
She quickly slid into the driver seat and drove from the tent camp towards the docks.
“You didn’t do anything wrong, Tenzin. It was quite easy actually to make sure you didn’t know anything.” She couldn’t help the small smirk as she glanced at Pema in the rear view mirror.

Pema's steps slowed as she thought of how easily Amon had taken Rohan from her hands, and the way she had collapsed after they were freed still left her feeling like a neglectful mother. She didn't even have the strength to feed him for two days afterwards.
She saw her family at the end of the dock and her steps began anew. She needed to be with them.
