Instead of just looking at the racial population of students at a school alone, look at the bigger picture. What are the demographics of the local community the school is in? What resources do they offer to students with disabilities? Do students in wheelchairs have full access to the campus? Do students with learning disabilities have the option of writing tests in a quieter environment if they need it, or other accommodations like more time? Or religious minorities? Do Muslim students have somewhere they can pray without being disturbed by other students going about their own lives?
If a school has 70% white students and 80% white applicants, then they're already fairly diverse for what they're working with. And as far as applicants go, 30% of the offers they send might go out to black applicants, but then most of those applicants accept other offers instead so they end up with 15% of their first-year students being black. You have no way of knowing if that's the case.
Also, what's the area like? Schools that don't have a lot of student housing available (with 12 campuses across the province for my college, only one of the campuses has dorms because the others just don't have space) will generally favour students living nearby because an hour-plus commute each way wouldn't be fair (they also know from experience that students who have to travel further don't show up as often, and they want students to actually show up). If the area within a half-hour drive is predominantly people of a certain race, it also makes sense that that school's student body would be similarly proportioned. Hell, in the school I go to, my campus has a roughly 70% white student population in an area with a 90% white population. The campuses in the nearest city are more racially diverse because they're serving communities that are more racially diverse.
FINALLY, diversity is about more than race. It's gender, sexual orientation, disability, religion, family structure, ethnicity, and every single facet that makes up a person's background. So really, it sounds like you value racial diversity more than diversity as a whole.
COLLEGE HELP!
alright guys *deep breath*
so i'm italian-american, and i'm interested in an HBCU
one of my main values is diversity (i wont even consider a school with +70% white students) and i have no issues attending a mainly black school
however
the last thing i want to do is make any of the students uncomfortable with my presence or make them feel like once again a (mainly?) white person is invading and taking over safe spaces
so if anyone has any advice or thoughts...
thanks!!

Let's Get This Weekend Going
Daily Reflection Friday, 2 February 2024
Things I'm Grateful For:
The study planner I bought has definitely been nice, so far. I got the Kokuyo Campus Weekly Visualized B5 paper set and one of their binder notebooks to put it in. I can't wait until next week when I get the full spread at once. I think this will be great for helping me plan things out better.
Highlights:
I'm really happy with how much I've been able to get done today. Getting most of a long to-do list checked off by 4:30pm is pretty impressive by my standards as of late.
Challenges:
I fully expect to have to email my Communications teacher Sunday night about the discussion post, explaining that unless the extra response on my own thread counted, I couldn't do both because there just weren't enough threads posted for me to respond to; I shut my computer down for the night at 8 so I can sleep, and if there aren't responses available by that time, there's nothing I can do. However, I don't feel that I should be punished for others procrastinating, as we've known about those posts for almost a week by that point.
Emotions:
I hate being bottlenecked by others not doing their share of things, but that's what's going on for Communications right now.
Today's To-Do List:
Complete
Replace broken litter box.
Copy notes for Organizational Behaviour.
30 minutes of housework.
Finish Access Module 1 for Computer Apps.
Read Chapter 5 Summary for Accounting.
Chapter 5 Smartbook review for Accounting.
The first response to the Communications discussion post.
Chronological and functional versions of my working resume.
Incomplete
The second response to the Communications discussion post (waiting on others to do their posts in the first place).
Start Assignment 1 for Marketing.
Tomorrow's To-Do List:
Clean bathroom.
Read Chapter 6 Summary for Accounting.
Chapter 6 Smartbook review for Accounting.

Had Some Busy Days
Daily Reflection Thursday, 1 February 2024
Things I'm Grateful For:
Highlights:
My new stationery came in yesterday, and I'm really excited to get to use it. The paper is nice to write on, and I'm really liking the new mechanical pencil, too.
That one-time grant came in, so I get to go mattress shopping next week.
My head start for Computer Apps jumped ahead a lot. The last Excel module is due tomorrow, and the first Access module is due on 16 February. I'm already 3/4 of the way though the first Access module.
Challenges:
My Marketing teacher is involved with another event on campus so that class was cancelled today (it was also cancelled Monday because of the snow day), and missing it for a full week now both makes me feel like I'm falling behind and like I don't have anything to do for that course right now.
Communications was also a no-go. There was nothing saying class was cancelled today, but the teacher didn't show up. Some of my classmates and I went to that other event for a bit to take a look, but we were there for ten minutes before leaving again.
Today's To-Do List:
Complete
Reading for Organizational Behaviour.
Discussion post for Communications.
Practice test for Accounting.
Incomplete
Two responses to Communications discussion posts (waiting on others to do their posts in the first place).
Chronological and functional versions of my working resume.
Replace broken litter box.

Another Week Over
Daily Reflection Sunday, 28 January 2024
Things I'm Grateful For:
Highlights:
For the first time in a long while, I think I've gotten over half of my to-do list done. That is definitely exciting, and I'm hoping I can keep up with that again.
Challenges:
My bedroom didn't get cleaned like I wanted to, because my dad's home and sitting out in the living room. Every time he sees me bring something out of my bedroom, unless it went in with me the last time I went in, I get growled at. So if I can't get to something right away, it waits until he's not around to see it. While I don't really enjoy being surrounded by trash, I'd rather that than getting in trouble for cleaning up after myself. It's funny that he pulls that shit though, since it's his car that reeks of stale coffee because it's full of garbage all the time. The fact that he has no right to talk is why I get so angry about this; if he had my standards I'd understand it a bit more, but he's just so damn lazy instead.
Emotions:
I really can't wait until I can get my own place, fuck. I know full well I'm going to have to have roommates when I go to get my Bachelor's; no way can I afford my own apartment (and it would have to be an apartment so I can bring my cats with me) on a part-time job.
Today's To-Do List:
Complete
Chapter 6 assignment for Accounting.
Read Chapter 13 for Communications.
Business Model for Marketing project. I might have only spent about half an hour on it, but it's as good as I can get at this point in time.
Change bedding.
Buy cat food, litter, and a new litter box.
Laundry
Pack a gym bag for tomorrow morning.
Incomplete
Half an hour cleaning my bedroom (besides the time it takes to change my bedding).
Replace cracked litter box, and scrub the floor underneath of it.
Make chronological and functional versions of my working resume.
Math homework.
Tomorrow's To-Do List:
Hit the gym when they open, and shower there.

Making Up For A Day
Daily Reflection Saturday, 27 January 2024
Highlights:
I have a clean toilet and sink again, at least for now. By no means is my bathroom fully clean, but getting those two things done makes a huge difference.
Challenges:
I'm going to have to save up for a while to replace my bathroom vanity, most likely. The sink itself is rusting out, and it's going to cost about $600 to replace everything. Sure my Dad's car is paid off and it'd be about three car payments to cover this, but I guarantee he's just going to end up eating that money instead of putting anything into savings to fix this house up. The pain is that I'll probably also have to repaint the bathroom again. Though if that's the case, I'm going to hire someone else to do it. I learned last time that my back can't handle it, and my parents won't do anything to help.
Emotions:
I love how just trying to deal with housework ends up with my in a spiral of frustration with my parents and how lazy they are. As much as I hate to admit it, I don't think I'm not going to do anything for them when they get older. Hopefully, some space away from them when I can support myself will do me some good and that will change, otherwise I will probably be that person who dumps them in a home when they can't take care of themselves anymore and fucks off.
I'm looking forward to when temperatures start to warm up again. I want to buy a couple of more casual waistcoats (the one I have is not only too big, but part of a three-piece suit; I want some I can wear with jeans). When I get to that point I'm hoping to show off my tie collection a bit more by way of wearing them.
Today's To-Do List:
Complete
Half an hour of cleaning my bathroom.
Read Chapter 10 for Marketing.
Read Chapter 12 for Communications.
Incomplete
Read chapter 13 for Communications.
Make chronological and functional versions of my working resume.
Chapter 6 work for Accounting.
Tomorrow's To-Do List:
Laundry
Change bedding
Half an hour cleaning my bedroom (besides the time it takes to change my bedding).

Fridays Always Seem Productive At First
Daily Reflection Friday, 26 January 2024
Things I'm Grateful For:
The teacher for my Friday class keeping things short, so I have plenty of time to get home early enough that Mom has the car to get to work. And since she'll be leaving well before Dad gets home, I don't have to put effort into parking. I can just back into the middle of the driveway and it's fine.
Highlights:
I like having only one class on Friday, honestly. I like working from home since I don't feel like disturbing anyone when I get something to eat, my chair is more comfortable, and the bathroom is much closer.
Challenges:
I don't know if 100 cards will be enough for that research report. I've already gone through a third of them, and I'm definitely not a third of the way through my research.
I went to lay down for a bit to get some weight off my spine, and next thing I knew I'd slept for four hours. So that was kind of a bummer. And unfortunately I didn't get any work done after that, either. I hopped on a Discord call with my friends, we played Valheim for a bit, then I went to go get another few hours of Watch Dogs 2. I really want to get through the campaign of that game.
Emotions:
I'm not sure how I feel about being the one in the class people go to if they have issues with something. On one hand, it makes me feel important, and kind of reinforces that I'm doing well; I feel that my effort is paying off, rather than it just being an easy program. On the other, I don't feel like I'm great at explaining things, and I'm afraid that I'm just giving the answers when I explain how to get that answer.
Today's To-Do List:
Complete
Find a video on diversity for Organizational Behaviour.
Incomplete
Read Chapter 10 for Marketing.
Read Chapters 12-13 for Communications.
Make chronological and functional versions of my working resume.
Chapter 6 work for Accounting.
Tomorrow's To-Do List:
Clean my bathroom.

Catching Up Again
Daily Reflection Thursday, 25 January 2024
Things I'm Grateful For:
Highlights:
The research report I have to do for Communications can be on any topic, not just business (though tying business in is a bonus). Scrap my first six ideas (or save them for later, more like), I'm doing eight pages on genetic disorders/diseases in Quarter Horses, with a tie-in on profitability for why some of those problems are bred for (yes, I will absolutely be taking the piss out of halter breeders in this report).
Challenges:
For my Marketing course this semester, the marketing plan we have to do is based on a product we're creating, not an existing company. Thankfully once I expressed my hesitation in trying to come up with something, we spent almost half the class working on mind maps to come up with ideas. So I have an idea now, at least; a custom PC building service.
I tend to stay in my main classroom at lunch, taking the opportunity to get more work done since it doesn't take me an hour to eat. Unfortunately, four of the international students in my class also stay in that room, though they take the time to socialize. And unfortunately, socializing with them involved a lot of shouting. I've tried to ask them before if they can keep it down, but that doesn't happen. Even with my headphones on (active noise cancelling headphones, I may add) as loud as I can handle, I can still hear them from across the room.
Emotions:
I'm kind of enjoying the difference between my projects for those two classes, and how neither of them are tied into my plan to become an accountant.
The typical frustration with the international students in my class. There is a super petty part of me that wishes they'd drop out. For clarity's sake, the fact that they are international students has nothing to do with this. It's purely because they talk very loudly and off-topic on the regular, interfering with my ability to focus on my work. There are other students in my class I often feel the same way about, but those cases aren't daily frustrations because it doesn't happen as often.
Today's To-Do List:
Complete
Pick up cue cards to start research for my Communications report.
Start research for the Communications report.
Incomplete
Read Chapter 10 for Marketing.
Read Chapters 12-13 for Communications.
Make chronological and functional versions of my working resume.
Chapter 6 work for Accounting.

Still Going
Daily Reflection Wednesday, 24 January 2024
Things I'm Grateful For:
I made taco pasta yesterday, and had enough left over to pack some for lunch.
Highlights:
I spent over an hour in the gym after class. I'm definitely going to be sore in the morning, but it'll be worth it.
I bought another water bottle from the school bookstore, bringing my total waterbottle collection up to three. While this one is plastic, it holds 1L and has markings up the side, making it the biggest, and the easiest to do the math for to drink enough water through the day.
Challenges:
I was running late because of my mother. She got up while I was finishing getting ready, and then proceeded to go back to bed. All I had left to do was brush my teeth and get my shoes on, and I probably still would have been ready before she finished getting dressed, but instead I had to keep getting after her because she needed the car. I was still ready to tell her to find a different way to work, because I was tired of waiting around for her.
Today's To-Do List:
Complete
Hit the gym after class. It'll be an extra hour until Dad can pick me up, I might as well make use of the time.
Finish Excel module 7 for Computer apps.
Incomplete
Read Chapter 10 for Marketing.
Read Chapters 12-13 for Communications.
Make chronological and functional versions of my master resume.

Get through chapter 6 work for Accounting.

Bit of a Slump, But I'm Managing
Daily Reflection Tuesday, 23 January, 2024
Highlights:
I picked up a beard trimmer yesterday, but it might be the weekend before I get a chance to use it. Depends on how good I am at getting up on time until I have the house to myself.
Challenges:
I qualify for another student grant, but the account they have on file for some reason (I don't know why) isn't right. So I have to try and fight to get that changed on time. Go figure there's no way I can find online to get it dealt with, so this is a pain in the ass.
Emotions:
I'm looking forward to D&D again, which is nice. I definitely think I'm not going to pick up any new games for a while, though, even if I don't just get super busy.
God my classmates can be frustrating. The number of times they just repeatedly misunderstand something in the exact same way is astounding. I give the international students a little more leeway because of language differences, but the others don't have that excuse. They just ignore the explanation given ahead of time. I sit near the back so I can see a lot of laptop screens. The three playing games all the time are the three I get the most irritated with for this.
Today's To-Do List:
Complete
Quick grocery store top-up run.
Pack a bag for the gym.
Incomplete
Read Chapter 10 for Marketing.
Read Chapters 12-13 for Communications.
Make chronological and functional versions of my master resume.
Tomorrow's To-Do List:
Hit the gym after class. It'll be an extra hour until Dad can pick me up, I might as well make use of the time.

Getting Ready Again
Daily Reflection Sunday, 21 January, 2024
Things I'm Grateful For:
Highlights:
Clean sheets are always nice to have. It's been almost a month since I was able to get them washed in addition to my laundry (because my parents can't get theirs done on their days off or any other time in the week, they have to wait until it's my days off and I'm trying to do mine), so my bedding was kind of gross.

Maintaining Momentum
Daily Reflection Saturday, 20 January, 2024
Highlights:
I got a decent chunk of work done, and then a friend talked me into playing Valheim for a bit. That "bit" turned into six hours, which I'm not pleased by, but honestly taking the break probably did me some good. I was feeling more caught up anyway, so it's not as bad as it could have been. If I still had that Communications assignment to do, it would be a different story.
Challenges:
Even when I get to bed on time I have problems getting up in the morning. Even my laptop is a distraction sometimes. Maybe I should look into getting a white noise machine, so I can leave my laptop in my backpack?
Emotions:
Feeling a bit guilty about spending so long on a game that I could have spent working on schoolwork, honestly.
I feel like that guilt is a bit of a problem, to be completely honest.
Today's To-Do List:
Complete
Read Chapter 6 for Accounting.
Read chapter 2 for Organizational Behaviour.
Incomplete

Full Day Didn't Feel Full
Daily Reflection Friday, 19 January, 2024
Highlights:
I picked up some ramen that I can actually eat when I got groceries the other day (trying to find some that didn't have oyster sauce or chicken broth was a nightmare, but I finally found some). I had to buy a 4pk, but I am so glad I did, because that stuff is good; especially with a hard-boiled egg, some chopped green onion, and a little bit of wasabi paste.
Challenges:
I didn't get to the gym like I wanted to. I didn't haul myself out of bed until almost noon (though I was up working until 2:00am, after Mom already left for work. Dad was home, but I really don't like driving his car because it's full of garbage and reeks of stale coffee from at least one cup in the pile of trash.
The job search analysis assignment is kicking my ass. I apparently still haven't recovered from when I was on income assistance and had to put out ten applications a month to prove I was looking for a job--after five years of that, searching job postings is exhausting.
My desktop just decided to get rid of the Bluetooth driver on me, so that took half an hour to fix.
Emotions:
I was frustrated with that assignment when no half-hour chunk of work seemed to make any improvement over the one before. I think that five hours of work for five percent of my overall grade probably makes for more than enough work though, so I'm relieved to have it submitted and out of my way.
Today's To-Do List:
Complete
Read chapter 8 for Communications.
Job search analysis assignment for Communications. That thing took five hours of work. Holy shit. I'm so glad to have it done and over with, though.
Incomplete
Read chapter 6 for Accounting.
Read chapter 2 for Organizational Behaviour.
Start Influencing Interactions assignment for Organizational Behaviour.
Read chapter 10 for Marketing.
Read chapters 12-13 for Communications.
Hit the gym early in the morning, and then come back in time for Mom to have the car to get to work.
Make chronological and functional versions of my master resume.
Tomorrow's To-Do List:
Get another round of dishes done.
Clean bathroom.

Reading tip for when you’re reading something educational (self growth, skill based etc)
When you start your self development journey / want to take it even higher, most of us turn to reading books or articles. We take notes and highlight the areas that we found impactful, we remember those points for a couple of days and then boom - we forget.
books are such a wealth of information but it’s not possible to read every single book you’ve read once multiple times.
you might find it frustrating that you can’t seem to remember all that information when you need to, or you keep racking your brains trying to remember exactly where you had read that particular insight.
here’s a method to help you out.
If you have a kindle / read online, make a Word doc/ pages doc of all the things you’ve highlighted. Copy the highlighted areas, which would be areas that you found hopefully/ intriguing/ interesting, and paste them on the word doc. Use only one document for all your notes of different books and every month or so, take about 30 minutes to rapidly go through them. if you read physical books, take a photo of the sentence/ paragraph that you liked, crop it out so that the other stuff isn’t there, and put that photo in the document.
this allows for a couple of things - information isn’t lost when you finish reading the book. Sometimes we find the solution to a problem too early and when the problem crops up, we don’t remember that we had already found the answer. Two, it allows for revision and three, you may see that with time, the way you understood that particular point changes.
this is not for fictional or fantasy books - this is for books that talk about self development, marketing, sales, technical know how, etc. Stuff that you should remember and would impact your progress positively.

Effectively The End of Week 3
Daily Reflection Thursday, 18 January, 2024
Highlights:
Instead of the normal Accounting class, we had a couple of guest speakers from a local accounting firm. And they do offer a lot of flexibility for hours, so that's a place I could start with them in town and transfer to a different office to work part-time while doing my Bachelor's in the city. I found my goal job after graduation!
I made another JetPens order today, buying the bulk of my school supplies for next year early. The strap for the folder in my binder broke back in October, and now the dividers are breaking. Rather than buy another set of dividers for three months, I'll just get a head start with my new system. This also means holding off on proper notes for a couple of weeks, so I don't have to re-copy as much stuff when the paper switch happens.
Challenges:
I showed up early for the guest speaker and decided to get through some more notes. Only to realize that I didn't have my highlighters. I left my binder in my locker (on purpose, so it was one less thing I had to lug across campus), and my highlighters were in my binder. So I sat around talking with others as they trickled in instead.
Emotions:
I was definitely feeling a lot better after the guest speakers than I was beforehand. I was fearing a case of "no real opportunities until you get your CPA" but they actually have quite a few opportunities where I could make a full career out of there if I didn't want to move.
Today's To-Do List:
Complete
Figure out what's going on for screenshots for that Communications assignment.
Incomplete
Read chapter 8 for Communications.
Start job post analysis assignment for Communications.
Read chapter 6 for Accounting.
Read chapter 2 for Organizational Behaviour.
Start Influencing Interactions assignment for Organizational Behaviour.
Read chapter 10 for Marketing.
Read chapters 12-13 for Communications.
Tomorrow's To-Do List:
Hit the gym early in the morning, and then come back in time for Mom to have the car to get to work.
Everything on the homework list that doesn't carry over, of which there will almost certainly be a lot. I have six chapters to read, plus assignments. No way am I doing that all tonight.
Make chronological and functional versions of my master resume.

Another Couple of Decent Days
Daily Reflection Wednesday, 17 January, 2024
Highlights:
There's no class Friday, so I'm thinking I'll head over in the morning like I usually would (or a bit earlier) and spend a bit of time at the gym before bringing the car back for Mom.
I didn't make an ass of myself in Math like I did Monday with reflexively giving an answer for a much higher level (e.g. i as the square root of -1 vs representing an interest rate). I was tired Monday, and sitting in a math class took me back to high school calculus.
Challenges:
While I'm keeping up on my assignments, I have a lot of reading to do.
Emotions:
Library D&D Tuesday wasn't nearly as bad as I was thinking. Having some time without a game was nice, and is doing me some good.
Today's To-Do List:
Complete
Get groceries
Start planning questions for Thursday's guest speaker
Catch up on Communications notes.
Incomplete
Read chapter 8 for Communications.
Start job post analysis assignment for Communications.
Read chapter 10 for Marketing.
Catch up on notes for Marketing.
Read chapter 6 for Accounting.
Read chapter 2 for Organizational Behaviour.
Catch up on notes for Organizational Behaviour.
Start Influencing Interactions assignment for Organizational Behaviour.
Tomorrow's To-Do List:
Ask about the screenshots for the Communications assignment; they have to be legible, so should we split long posts up into multiple screenshots, or just include a major portion rather than the entire thing?

Back in Action
Daily Reflection Monday, 15 January, 2024
Things I'm Grateful For:
I had enough points in the Burger King app that I didn't have to pay for my lunch.
Highlights:
I got up with my alarm and managed to do almost everything on my to-do list this morning. I just forgot to take my vitamins.
My grandmother forgot I was coming over to do housework this week, so she did a decent chunk herself. All I had to do was the routine stuff in the bathroom.
I finished my Chapter 5 work for Accounting, and read most of Chapter 6. The work isn't available online for me to get through that, yet.
Challenges:
Couldn't have much for supper, because there's not enough in the house for me to be able to make a meal out of. I'm glad I managed to get something calorie-dense for lunch at least, to get me through the day otherwise.
I was so tempted to ask one of the girls in my Accounting class what she was doing, very loudly, when she answered a video call right in the middle of class. And of course she didn't get the hint when half the class looked at her like she was crazy.
Emotions:
I definitely had a few moments of frustration during Math (first class on a Monday morning, I'm still a bit out of it), but the rest of the day was pretty good.
Today's To-Do List:
Complete
Nana's housework
Fill out my planner for the week
Put together the grocery list
Tomorrow's To-Do List:
Get groceries
Start coming up for questions for the guest speaker Thursday afternoon.
