there is something horrifically grim to it, but illustrations for gaza and palestinians tend to catch more mass attention that actual photos of people. this made me feel incredibly helpless for a long while, seeing both how people would rather look at a neat drawing of red black green and white than look a human in the eyes, and how online platforms would rather push a viral drawing while suppressing those begging for help at the same time.
a way to cope with this feeling has been taking advantage of it to directly guide people to helping palestinians.
if art gets better traction, then there’s an incredible amount of good that can be done by creating art that immediately links to fundraisers. creating art of the many images of those who are asking for help.
within hours of posting my drawing, there has been jumps in the thousands for bashar from gaza’s fundraiser. it’s a small effort in the grand scheme of things. it’s not a fix it. but it’s something good. please take care of each other and do what you can. i think this could help a lot of people if a lot of people did it.
here is bashar. i’ve drawn him, spoken to him, and known him now for a few months. any shares help, any art helps. draw who you see, draw what you see. thanks all

tired of those normies making the most reactionary videos on furries, as if the community doesn't mostly consist of queer, neurodivergent, and kink positive folks of many difficult backgrounds.

every other year a minority or any weird or autistic person gets so many eyes on them that it restarts a "lolcow" movement where there is heavy documentation of that person as if they were an animal and I honestly think that's the ultimate form of dehumanization. yeah some of them you can argue are "bad people" but tbh in my opinion nobody deserves that.

caught in that wobnderful limbo between "not disabled enough to be unfit for work" and "too disabled for anyone to hire" where no government programs exist to help me and the usa is eagerly salivating for me to die

i don't think enough people talk about the fact the revolution can and will only come when we can take care of ourselves. no international discord community, no poignant critique of capital, no political party or mass movement protest is going to work. only when cops know that food will still be on their families table will they turn in their badges and guns. only when there are strike funds, and childcare arrangements, and free clinics can the workers afford to bring the system to its knees. only when the system coming down doesn't mean the world coming loose will the soldier turn on his officers and bring power to the people.
the average person is just trying to survive. they're broke and overworked and honestly, they're hopeless. they've been told their whole lives that they can never affect change and they believe it. they don't 'care' about politics, but they're still desperate for change. it's why the guy who had a worm in his head is currently polling at 15%, because people are starving for another choice. hell it's why trump won - people are begging for something else, anything else, and in environments like that authoritarianism blooms.
you have to show people there's a way we can take care of each other without a state, that actually we can take care of ourselves as a village more than someone in charge could ever rule us. you have to be the start of that. people learn through action, hope spreads like a wildfire and when communities realize they own their land, they can improve their communities, you see it flourish. but for fuck sake, that means you have to learn to talk to people who arent politics heads. and you have to get off twitter and get into a soup kitchen or a community garden or a library program or hell just go talk to your neighbors! otherwise you're not a leftist, or a communist, or an anarchist, you're a cosplayer

im working on a thought here but i think a crucial component of supporting and advocating for liberal and progressive ideas is you have to trust people to muddle through mistakes. i see a lot of people that clearly want *safety* for marginalized people but their proposals amount to putting everyone in a padded room with their hands on a well lit table forever. we have to sanitize media, we have to protect people. we can't hurt anyone, we can't risk anyone-- but we can constantly constantly surveil each other and make new rules against ever doing the wrong things. you know, the bad things, the dirty things, the things that hurt you and make you sick and ruin everything for everyone forever. it's our moral duty, isn't it? to make the world cleaner and brighter and safer?
i think, probably, it would help a lot of us to take a deep breath and consider that you have to make mistakes in life. and so does everyone else. you learn things and you fuck up and you pull through. and you can warn people, if you think they're going to make a mistake, but i don't think you have a right to stop them from doing whatever damn fool thing they're up to.
i think that's what's really bothering me about current progressive discourse, and a lot of the proposed policies. a lot of kids are really scared right now that any single mistake is fatal, and while they're not totally wrong-- the economy sucks, there's still a plague going on, and america is a carceral panopticon--it's still not their *right* let alone their moral obligation to build a system where no one has the freedom to fuck up.
i don't know what the solution is here. a world with more resources would be great. a world with less deadly risk, too. but i'd settle for a world where we recognized and applauded everyone's human right to do weird stupid bullshit and learn better--or not--on their own time.

I think it's very fascinating that, back to back, we have had a pair of what I want to call system shocks on tumblr.
The first wave was the beef between Kendrick and Drake. The beef reached truly titanic levels in order to breach containment and reach our shores in any real way. What was then immediately revealed is that a very loud (if not actually numerous) portion of the tumblr userbase is not simply ignorant of rap music, but proudly so, and not just proudly so, but ignorant of it in ways that have become stereotypes of rap critics. Accusations of violence, misogyny, and difficulty of understanding it were particularly visible to me. With a side helping of racism. The response to this was twofold: tumblr users either got into some damn funny fights when idiots doubled down on their ignorance, or they were curious and we got some damn good recommendations.
The second event was this week: The AO3 Ship Bracket finals: Destiel vs Suletta. The strongest yaoi of the past vs the strongest yuri of today. As Sulemio tore through the polls, again this trend emerged! Deeply incurious, proudly ignorant people parroting criticisms of anime that have become stereotypes anime fans repeat to make fun of critics! Accusations of sexualization, misogyny, and obscurity were particularly visible to me. With a side helping of racism. And then, just like last time, people split off into two camps. The first was idiots without any actual knowledge of Gundam showing up to crow about Destiel like the franchise isn't older than some of their parents. The second was some really good recommendation threads with people willing to learn (just start on Witch From Mercury, it's fine, then maybe watch The Origin or something, other people have better recs than me).
I think it's really interesting that tumblr's userbase has been exposed for being really inflexible and driven into a rut in its fandom spaces. And defensively so. I think that expanding your horizons is good for you for a lot of reasons, but avoiding looking like a jackass on tumblr is a really good incentive, I think.
