POTC HIPSTER AU

Jack Sparrow is, in his particulars, exactly the same. He used to own a rum bar, but it was (hostile-ly!) taken over by his former investment partner, Hector Barbossa, who turned it from a niche but very popular locals only spot, to a regular bar with bar food and a monkey and terrible, awful bands. His seed money, outside the investments, came from…alternate revenue streams. Unfortunately for him, that means it is a lot harder for him to recover his precious bar in an aboveboard manner and has left him scrambling from job to job as he rebuilds his reputation as a (crazy) guy who can get things done without anyone asking too many questions.Or at least without anyone asking the right questions.

Norrington is a security analyst and independent contractor with contacts in many, many places because of his current security work and former military work. He is emphatically not a hipster, though he does appreciate good beer (the bands, less so). He does, however, know Jack Sparrow, by reputation if nothing else, and has often found himself in a position to confound the man’s alternate revenue streams. He is VERY good at his job. (Groves has tried to interest Norrington in the local music scene and has failed utterly. Gillette likes karaoke, but only when he’s very drunk.)

Will Turner likes craft beer, Stumptown coffee, and is also still a blacksmith, though with more of a line in decorative wrought iron and swords and random things he sells through etsy. I am 99% sure I’ve seen someone dressed like him wandering through Ballard, so…he also pretty much looks the same.

Elizabeth Swann loves music, dresses like she lives in a Blondie video, and owns a loft in a seedy part of town. And, honestly, most of the buildings around her. And she invests in things with her trust fund. And drags Will with her everywhere. And, generally, thinks that rules are for other people (she’s not wrong, either; her family has lawyers on retention that would make most people cry).

it’s really remarkable how little actually has to change to make the hipster thing work :P

sorry, i’ve now been distracted by the idea of hipster pirate hacker Jack breaking into Norrington’s house and Norrington being super annoyed and “how did you get past the security system” and Jack just sort of beaming and saying he cut the electricity off for the block and also broke Norrington’s window with a rock, sometimes the old ways are best don’t you know, now that he’s there why don’t they have a sit down and discuss the best ways of everyone getting everything they want except maybe Norrington because he’s sure what Norrington wants is the rest of them in jail or rotting in some high security internetless dungeon but at least AT LEAST Norrington will get his hands on Barbossa, really, isn’t that worth it?

ps, it’s not.

there’s a lot of drinking involved and tiny venues and bands no one has heard of. Norrington gets dragged along to some really sketchy bars, Elizabeth has a marvelous time, Will looks confused a lot, and Jack leaves chaos in his wake, as per usual.
