Haha not at all, I like discussion!
I did hear that it was one of the original writers that floated the idea. I don’t fully agree with him that it makes the setting less epic. As I mentioned I think it opens up new possibilities: the wasteland thing gets old and quite frankly (and this is more to do with bethesda than him) I’m getting sick of the Brotherhood of still. Not for the show, you gotta have them in the show but the games. I agree that the show needs to be more akin to FO3, because it’s an introduction to the world for many.
My issue was more they didn’t really need to lose (possibly, I haven’t seen it yet i’m making assumptions. I’m not concerned with spoilers)
lthat thread for future games: not the show . I think maybe that’s what I didn’t specify. The show is fine how it is I was just thinking of rhe wider implications for the series.
The setting in any future games doesn’t have to become shiny and advanced but just open up the stage for new and powerful factions and slightly different stories. They could have set the show away from places like NV since former america is a vast place, and I like the idea that diffrent places are at diffrent stages. It adds variety
I understand the theme of the NCR following the path of the old world and history repeating itself. Personally I think it’s a bit cliche but that’s just me.
At the end of the day I hope Bethesda at least got the message that Fallout 76 is NOT the direction the fans want. I would love them to give it to another studio to see what they do.
Ok so here's the thing: I totally get where the Fallout New Vegas crowd are coming from
(Note: I haven't watched the show yet I'm only going off what's come across my dash so keep that in mind)
Fallout New Vegas is and always will be my favorite fallout game. But I also love Fallout 4. I'm a member of both camps.
I'm also weird in that I love Fallout but absolutely will not touch anything else in the post-apocalyptic genre because...I kinda hate it.
Fallout is Post apocalyptic, but not in the same way something like "The Last of Us" is. It's not grounded in reality for one, and whilst society isn't necessarily moving "forward"...it does exist in one form or another...and it is moving.
And then you have Fallout New Vegas which is very much post-post apocalyptic. It's not just about the wasteland and survival and fighting: Society is moving forward What direction do we want it to go? (oh that and Casinos! you have to admin the casinos were fun)
People are absolutely correct in that the games still exist. Nothing is stopping you from playing them It's not erasing the whole game from canon (I think?) and in a game series like Fallout canon isn't the most important thing anyway.
But here's the thing: By wiping out all that stuff on the west coast, the NCR etc. It shows us how Bethesda see's the series. You know that thing you don't see as much nowadays: when a movie had a sequel they would just undo everything that happens in the first one off screen?
It's like that: We have to maintain the status quo: . Because it seems to Bethesda, fallout is about pew pew chaos in the wasteland! it's why it still looks like the bombs dropped last week even though it's been like (200 years?). It's all wasteland rubble and shanty towns! Because it's fallout, that's the brand. Thats what people expect. The FNV fans are frustrated because it's Bethesda sending a clear message that their vision for the series is very much "stuck in one place perpetually" as is often the case with the genre. forever looking back, never looking forward.
But it doesn't have to be like that! the series can move forward whilst still being Fallout. In fact it would be super cool to see a setting where society has started to built more. Like we saw in F:NV . It opens up new story opportunities. New factions, all kind of cool new shit.
This isn't about who likes what games or why or even about the show (I've heard good things, so honestly I hope I like it) . I don't care. I just think I can see the argument that Bethesds wouldn't really want to take the series in any particular new direction because they've settled into "the brand"

^ and it’s not evening doing that. They’re selling it on the premise that it’s this revolutionary thing that might at some point, maybe, be useful and profitable. Despite the mantra of “it’s inevitable” I’m beginning to think the bubble might actually burst (one can hope).
Things I do not like AI for:
-Making images
-Making music
-Writing
-Doing anything artistic
-Thinking or drawing conclusions for me
Things I would kind of like AI for:
-Identifying the font used in an image (there's a couple places that do this, but nothing that's been super helpful to me) or video
-Making reverse images searches more efficient
-Allowing more specific, tailored searches on stock image/video sites beyond what just the image tags and alt text can help with
-Helping me find primary sources I've been unable to locate out of my own efforts during research
-Being able to ask my GPS more specific questions about which lane I need to be in (but only if it was going to be SUPER accurate)
Most common ways people seem to use AI:
-Making images
-Making music
-Writing
-Doing anything artistic
-Thinking or drawing conclusions for them
-_-
I don't mind the concept of AI as a tool. If it would help me find the resources I needed to be creative or information sources I might not have found even after extensive searching, that would be amazing!
But when people outsource creativity or critical thinking, that's when it's not okay. That's embracing "good enough" instead of excellent, generic products instead of masterpieces, and bland content instead of genuine excitement.
And when, instead of finding ways for AI to make life easier for creatives, the internet is instead buzzing about how great it is that you can just type in a few words and you get an image, or feed your vague ideas to a machine to have it spit out something resembling a story...
Isn't it sad?

OH MY GOD OH MY FUCKING GOD I WAS ACTUALLY CORRECT! JFC look at this!!! and the pip boy!!! Fuck I have to sit down for a second this is too much
I’m not hesitant to watch the Fallout show because of the F:NV retconn drama.
I’m hesitant to watch it because the main charachter is wearing a jumpsuit and there’s for sure going to be a scene where she’s in a tank top with it hanging around her waist and which is so fucking hot but also a billion times more hot if she’s like doing some kind of mechanical fixing thing….but also the heterosexuality, like that breaks my lesbian heart
(No hate to the ghoul fuckers. You guys are valid)

Its wild to me that the polarization of the fallout show seems to match the polarization of the game fandom along two very distinct groups (purley just from looking at my dash). I haven't watched it yet and I'm so conflicted!
Fallout NV is probably my favorite game but I also love Fallout 4 (specifically for the reasons a lot of people hate it)
Looking at the trailer and from the people who've watched it: it sounds like what I was hoping or, not too serious, kind of silly has the vibes of the games. On the other hand. People are saying they retconned F:NV (from what I can tell because of a background image?) which I also hate! I hate the idea of "oh no we have to clear out the new societies so we can maintain a post apocalyptic status quo cause that's the franchises bread and butter" what I've always loved about Fallout is its post-post-apocalyptic vibes. (I mean F:NV is only post apocalyptic in passing)
Ironically my issue with the post-apoc genre is its always backwards looking. Its the re-building part thats the interesting part and that was what F:NV was all about
But also....I dunno man...I wasn't even going to bother but like...Look at her! she says "Okie Dokie" I love that shit. (don't come in here and tell me its lame I don't care)

The thing about AI images like this is it’s a very generic “AI style”. Both visually and in subject matter So even if the artifacts are less obvious I see something like this which clearly isn’t a photo and not quite a digital painting or rendered 3d scene then i’m prompted to look for things. Such as test weird pan/bowl thing to the left of the door with two handles. It’s amazing how to they seem to keep getting better and yet not really.
we've started trying to figure out AI pics, particularly those not specifically tagged as AI, is it AI?
today looked at this pic:
Tumblr media
love it. gorgeous kitchen, amazing view. can i live there?
well, looking more closely at some details - and i'll admit that some of these complaints could be blurring artifacts - but let's see:
Tumblr media
farmhouse style sink undercounter is this a thing?
(not that i know of)
besides, wtf is that counter even made of? best i could say is it's some kind of stone that i'm unfamiliar with; that crazy "grain" look is saying "wood" but it's definitely not a wood counter (and if it is, it doesn't have the right finish to be surrounding a sink!)
Tumblr media
someone really smoothed that rock paver patio like super smooth there's no relief between the pavers, no texture
also look at the shadows in this part. the planter pot on the left, the shadow comes towards the viewer at about 630-7 on the clock. planter pot on the right? it may have a shadow, but not much of one. it should have more. the wall in the back? no shadow. look at the rest of the shadows in the full scene and they're mostly around 730 on the clock. given a "sunlit" scene, all the shadows should have the same angle, because the sun is 150 million km away and a step or two to the right doesn't change the angle much at all.
Tumblr media
eflection in the oven: I see the patio-ish (not quite the pattern mind you), and part of the door threshold, but i have no idea where that strongly outlined bird-shaped tile can be found on the floor
plus look at the handle of the oven
some escher shit going on there
Tumblr media
i guess that cake got stuck to the plate so they're just letting it hang out there
Tumblr media
enough detail for plant leaves (which should be yellowing due to lack of direct sunlight) and rims on the pots above but the plates are looking diagonal for some reason
Tumblr media
not sure what's going on at the bottom of this light shade, very inconsistent
Tumblr media
these pans should be hanging from hooks… perhaps long hooks? and one that's just kinda sorta doing weird shit at the top right?
there's also no sign of a hook in the opening at the end of the pan on the right
Tumblr media
why is the mullion on the left curved and the one on the right straight? this is something you'd get right when building and it wouldn't warp because the glass keeps it straight
(not to mention the stained-glass looking leaves behind the window?)
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
i'm really impressed at the consistency of the cabinets - i only see three different patterns
Tumblr media
finally consider the door threshold itself 1) left door goes all the way down to the kitchen floor level and is positively inside vs the patio 2) right door seems to extend over the patio just a bit in back, though it may still come down to the kitchen floor level, unsure 3) patio is higher than kitchen floor without there being a raised threshold to keep water out; kitchen would flood every time there's a rain storm
that's a smoking gun for me
so, to ask again - can i live there?
no. no, i can't, it doesn't exist.

Asbestos is more useful than Gen AI has been this whole time and we fucking banned that shit.
Generative AI so far:
purposefully used to spread misinformation
generating sexually explicit images of real people
Has completely fucked up academic integrity and peoples ability to actually write their own ideas
Has flooded the internet with spam. Both shitty "articles" and images
stolen from the collective works of any artist who has anything on the internet
has pushed artists out of jobs both professional and commissions
has flooded amazon and print on demand sites with its shit further edging real artists and authors out an already saturated space
Destroyed google image search so you can't trust anything you see
Says wrong shit all the time and unintentionally spreads misinformation with dangerous consequences (remember that Grok incident?)
Does not fucking work: Like the ED helpchat that encouraged dieting and making customer service chatbots somehow worse
Has a ridiculous carbon footprint.
Has given every dip-shit who traced when they were a kid delusions of grandeur
"yes those are potential issues but-"
No fucking buts about it Tech-bro-Timmy: Capitalism isn't going away anytime soon and don't follow that up with some vague washy washy notion about future potential just because your proud of your little pictures.
AI isn't going to do half the shit the tech industry cult says it's going to do and if it is...it probably shouldn't Let AI analyze medical images for cancer or catch financial fraud or things it's perfectly adept at. And keep Generative AI the fuck out of everything else.
"We don't need to be Anti AI."
Um, yes we do.
We can sit here and argue about all the positive things that AI could achieve when it comes to science and medicine, but all these Pro AI companies aren't interested in that.
To them AI is just another get rich quick scheme, snake oil that they can peddle out to hapless rubes with little to no effort.
Give them an inch and they'll take a mile.
I'm so sick and fucking tired of this fence sitting nonsense.

It doesn’t get talked about enough but AI Writing is more insulting to the art of writing than AI generated images are to Actual art. Why?
The story you THINK you want to tell isn't always the story you ACTUALLY want to tell.
If you put your first idea or first draft into a generator: it's going to be absolutely shit. Not because of it's inability to write (although that's part of it) but because it's given you exatly what you asked for.
A friend of mine set out to write a romance story in world with vampires and werewolves. She fell into the trap of wanting to do everything and cramming in way too many elements and characters and trying to work around too many problems. Eventually after a million edits she had found the actual core of the story she wanted to tell: reducing it down to focus on the two love interests and streamlining it to let the really cool elements and themes shine through. This version was awesome and I could tell it was her story as it incorporated so much of her background, experiences and things she felt deeply about.
And that's the thing. Most stories change from the initial idea to first draft and finished version. Some are basically unrecognizable. Ideas don't mean shit.
If she'd put that into a generator: then she'd get a werewolf/vampire gay romance story. Probably shit. Maaaaayybe passable. But never good. Never anything that actually means something or is anyone's voice. It would never have evolved beyond that.
No one who does that has a story to tell, they probably just want to sell some shit on amazon.

I was going through my first email account and I found THIS: correspondence between me and someone I met on Runescpe. I'm fucking dying, Mum suggested I take my twin brother?? I was so uncool even she knew I was uncool. Also...girl, who else did you have in mind?? I can't think of anyone else. The Runescape BF from 2005? why did you feel the need to specify "Laugh Out Loud" ?
Also..Sorry 2009 wasn't that much better.

This is what the AI Hype is like: it's insidious marketing riding on peoples assumptions and the mantra of "inevitable technological progress" . Everything is predicated on that it "might" be "at some point" not what it is now. They are riding on peoples cultural understanding of AI in sci fi, the assumption of technological progress and our recent memories of computers and the internet changing our lives. When they say "this is the future: it's inevitable" everyone nods. Except outside some uses cases the shit doesn't work. They try and shoehorn it in everywhere but no one fucking wants it. And then they do the little song and dance saying it's the exact same thing as previous tech waves: "Tralala Gotta get in on it! gotta learn the tool! gotta teach it to the kids! gotta adapt! it might take some jobs but new ones will be created!" <- none of which makes any fucking sense.
