Well at least Takaya-sensei admits to the pyschological war crimes she commited on so many of us when we were but mere teens looking forward to a fun, meaningless time at the beach...

So, I finally got around to reading the new Mabudachi Trio Arc Season 2, Chapter 1, and it is fabulous.
We have Ayame basically narrating his own Hatori fanfiction:
Tumblr media
While Hatori tears it apart:
Tumblr media
Then we have Shigure mentioning Hatori’s relationship with Mayu!
Tumblr media
There is also Ayame just being so extra and exuberant with his description of the grueling content that is to come in the story and Shigure being all “I actually feel sorry,” but really he is just sorry that he didn’t say a cool, “inspirational” type quote in the drama CD that is going to be coming out with the Season 2, Volume 1 DVD.
It’s so good! T0T

so in the new mabudachi trio chapter, ayame is concerned that certain parts of the series are so “grueling” and “hellish” that people will stop watching the new anime, and this is his reasoning for why it’s important that no one gives up on the show… my guy knows what the fuck is up lmao

This new extra politely told me ‘please quit your heavy foreshadowing and shut up and let people form their own opinions about the story’
Thanks, Takaya-sensei

Chapter Two of the Mabudachi Trio Arc is *chief’s kiss*!
First, the Mabudachi Trio’s dumbass chaotic energy was through the roof - as you will soon see. Second, it was meta af and I loved it! Third, they were discussing a very interesting and important topic - whether there should be warnings before the later Furuba episodes due to the “hellish and grueling” content (as Ayame put it). And that is a really valid discussion. Finally, there were just so many good moments!?
I’m going to talk about why this chapter is so great, but first, you can get the English version of the comic (in digital format only) over on Comixology and the Yen Press website. Both sites have the chapter for 1.00 USD and the Yen Press site provides links to even more places where it can be purchased. :) So, about all the excellent moments in this chapter! Let’s jump right in!
Tumblr media
Ayame starts going off and Hatori just puts on his glasses and opens up a book to start reading! I died!
Tumblr media
Then we have Hatori just straight up calling Shigure out.
Tumblr media
And Ayame, in a far more obtuse way, agreeing with Hatori.
Plus, probably one of the best ideas that Ayame has ever had in the series, lbr.
Tumblr media
And it all ends with Yuki and Machi on a date. Which is adorable! <3 And Yuki…
Tumblr media
being absolutely S A V A G E!
Tumblr media
I LOVE IT! And so does Ayame, lol.

Another fun aspect of yuki and kyo’s relationship: please think about how the life waiting for kyo (locked up, isolated, scorned by god) is the life yuki’s been silently suffering since childhood, but yuki isn’t allowed to acknowledge that. And while yuki doesn’t blame kyo for it, I imagine it brings up some bitterness within him that kyo’s free to talk about his experiences as the cat should he so choose and, even if he doesn’t, everyone in the family that’s close to kyo already knows. Whereas yuki’s abuse and isolation are treated like some dirty little family secret. Nobody talks about it, least of all yuki. The only one to directly reference his childhood before moving out is ayame, and he’s so full of guilt that it’d be uncomfortable for yuki to talk to him even if they were close. And tbh part of it is personality too. Kyo wears a lot of his heart on his sleeve. Even if he’s bad at verbalizing issues, his emotions are clear for all to see. Yuki… doesn’t do that. He locks it up tight so it’s even easier to hide how much he needs help. Please think about how incredibly frustrating it must be for yuki to hear kyo talk about his fear of a life that yuki’s living through while he’s delegated to suffering in silence due to family constrictions and his own fear and lack of confidence

i think it’s also important to remember that yuki, the one who is considered the closest to god due to being cursed by the rat, essentially experienced the isolation and imprisonment that was meant for the cat, the one shunned by god. he’s not only ignored by everyone and emotionally abandoned, but it comes to a head when he’s kept in the black room, made specifically for him by akito.
at that point, he must have become disillusioned by the whole order of things. he never really thought of himself as “better” than kyo anyways, not in the sense that he’s the rat and kyo’s the cat; even as children, he never showed disdain for kyo in the way that kyo showed disdain for him. but the role reversal of his and kyo’s experiences, what was versus what was “supposed” to be, takes some part in the core of his resentment.
it’s as a teenager that he calls kyo an outsider and constantly reminds him that he’s unwanted, but it’s not because he’s changed his mind, and not because he really believes it’s the truth – he sees that it isn’t. he’s known the truth of the matter since he was a child: kyo has a foster father who loves him and lets him explore the world. he’s friends with the other cursed kids, because he’s allowed to be with them and they want to be around him. kyo, the one who was supposed to have nothing, has everything that yuki was kept from obtaining.
yuki knows that kyo’s life isn’t perfect. he’s heard the rumors about his mom, probably knows that his real dad hates him. he’s literally bound to a monster. but he’s unable to look at kyo like the other cursed members do. he can’t look at kyo and think, “well, at least my life isn’t as horrible as the cat’s. i should be thankful.” because he lived the isolation that was meant for the cat. he was locked in a room like the cat. he was shunned by his family – his parents, his brother, all of his cousins – like the cat. he experienced all of this during his early childhood through to his teens, while kyo wasn’t slated to be imprisoned until he was an adult.
his hatred towards kyo isn’t a rat vs. cat instinct – it was formed from of a decade of bitterness, confusion, and trauma. he’s left with no one to talk to, and doesn’t confide in anyone until he finds a friend outside of tohru and the sohmas, someone so far removed from what’s going on that he feels even a little unburdened. and, for a long time, he doesn’t have the tools necessary to actually deal with what’s happened, which results in him “dealing” with it by fighting the only person in the situation he can actually fight, the person that is seen as acceptable to fight: kyo. facing akito about it, much less fighting her, is out of the question for a long time.

Lol, Jerry Jewell has embraced the Kyo Adidas memes!
It was pointed out on the Fruits Basket Club Facebook Group that Jerry Jewell, Kyo’s English VA, changed his Facebook profile pic to this:

LMAO! But at the same time - we are blessed! <3 He’s such an amazing voice actor in general, but for Kyo especially. He just is Kyo to me, he really brings Kyo to life, and it warms my heart to see him embracing these silly Kyo Adidas memes. :’)

Kyo and Yuki’s Love Languages
In the Valentine’s Day and White Day chapters of Furuba, we get introduced to Kyo and Yuki’s love languages.
Kyo’s Love Language:
Tumblr media
Kyo’s love language is primarily Acts of Service. He tends to show his love through actions. He does show his love through Words of Affirmation (literally any time he has reassured Tohru of something) and Quality Time (him and Tohru making pancakes together/learning from Kyo and Tohru’s granddaughter that they often take walks together/etc.) as well, but he primarily expresses his love for Tohru through physical acts like this - going with Tohru to the hot springs, despite his dislike of Yuki. Him making her soup (with leeks/chives in it) when she gets sick is another example. There are also smaller, simpler moments too, like when Kyo wards off those guys that try to hit on Tohru, because they think she is an “easy target.” Though, as I noted, Kyo does engage in Words of Affirmation, it isn’t his most preferred or comfortable way of expressing his love. He prefers the other love languages more, and I think this is largely due to his mother and his birth father. His birth father just uses his words to spout hate and blame others, while his mother spoke of her love for her son - of his cuteness and how she didn’t fear him and etc. - but her actions spoke otherwise, she committed suicide. And, of course, that is a very loaded topic. But, for Kyo, words have never really meant anything…or anything good anyway. Even with Kazuma. Kyo doesn’t really seem to genuinely believe in Kazuma and his good intentions until Kazuma literally lifts Kyo up and then proclaims that Kyo will breath from higher up/a higher place and so on. Of course, while Kyo has a lot of…stuff (for a lack of a better word)…going on with Tohru and his relationship with her at the start of the series. I also think another reason why he struggles with dealing with her and his feelings for her at the start is because Tohru’s primary love language is Words of Affirmation. We don’t really see a huge shift in Kyo and Tohru’s relationship until after Kyo’s True Form. It’s in that moment that we really see Tohru placing action (Acts of Service) and her Words of Affirmation together and aiming those words and actions specifically at Kyo. When she says that she wants to stay together with him, she says it while she is clinging on to him. Her words and her actions match up and support each other. From that moment on, I think Kyo was able to truly trust Tohru’s Words of Affirmation, he was able to understand her primary love language, so we start to see a large shift in their dynamic.  Yuki’s Love Language:
Tumblr media
Yuki’s primary love language is Receiving Gifts. That’s not to say that Yuki hasn’t displayed other love languages, he also partakes in Acts of Service (guiding Tohru home, breaking the chalk for Machi), but he really does seem to show his love mostly through gift giving. He gives Tohru a ribbon for White Day here and then with Machi we see him giving her a maple leaf and a Moegeta plush (Machi also gets him fertilizer as a way to show her love back to him, though she also engages in an Act of Service when she broke down the door when Yuki was suffering from a PTSD related panic attack). But, gift giving seems to be Yuki’s primary way of expressing his love. And like with Kyo, this makes sense when you think of the household he grew up in. His mother’s (as well as younger Ayame’s) words and actions were always cold. They didn’t offer any love or comfort. So why would he resort to either as a way to express his own feelings of love? He was also viewed as a special and revered Zodiac member due to him being the Rat. So he was always being held above the others. Gift giving is a sort of equalizing and balancing out type of action. When you give someone a gift you are reaching across and bridging those sorts of gaps, you give away a part of yourself every time you give out a gift. So I think that aspect of gift giving is what really appeals to Yuki and is the reason why Receiving Gifts is his main love language.  Though, interestingly, Yuki seems to respond more to Words of Affirmation and Acts of Service, especially when it comes to Tohru and Ayame. When Tohru tells him the things he needed to hear or does something simple like help him untangle a button that got stuck in his hair, we see Yuki respond very positively towards that. The same goes for Ayame. When Ayame tries to give Yuki gifts (bringing over peaches, for example) it often times fails. But when Ayame opens up to Yuki about wanting to create things, we see a true connection form between the two brothers for the first time, and that only later gets strengthened when Ayame shows up at the Parent-Teacher-Student conference. Yuki also responds really well to Quality Time with both Tohru and Ayame as well, and this is all likely because his lacked these forms of love language with his own mother. So he desired them. But, when it comes to expressing himself romantically (or when trying to express himself romantically), Yuki gives gifts to show his love. We see this illustrated best through his relationship with Machi.
