Everything Is Awful AU
I made myself sad.
Can you guys imagine Maria coming back from Spain all excited to see her friends again and Joaquin is still this great super dude who accomplished so much and grew a great manly mustache but like
imagine if Manolo never kept up with playing the guitar because Carlos would have gotten fed up with the distraction and maybe lost his temper one time and B R O K EÂ the freaking guitar that Maria gave him can you imagine
Manolo is so broken afterwards that he loses the will to keep pursuing music and he forces himself to continue bullfighting because god knows what else Carlos might break(and he had just become friends with the mariachis too)
And by the time Maria comes back Manolo is just this dull shell of a man who doesnât care for much of anything anymore and just grows angrier and more bitter each day and only Joaquin can talk him down sometimes when he finds his best friend having a breakdown in some alley because he wanted SO. MUCH. MORE THAN THIS. HE WANTED TO MAKE PEOPLE HAPPY WITH HIS MUSIC WHY COULDNâT HE JUST PLAY HIS STUPID MUSIC WHY.
Joaquin gives Manolo one of his medals that he got for rescuing some nuns in a church that caught on fire. Itâs a sacred heart, just like the one that was on his guitar.
And he thinks about Maria, who watched with horror as he killed a bull that day and felt nothing, like he had always felt nothing about killing bulls.
And he cries in Joaquinâs arms for hours as his sense of humanity slowly returns to him.
Maria finds them in the same spot that evening as the sun sets, Manolo lying with his head in Joaquinâs lap and just sniffling as his friend runs a comforting hand through his hair, trying to think of how best to tell his friend that he loves him.
They both look up and find Maria holding another long box.
