I made this blog since I’ve recently begun self-studying the Mongolian language, and I’d like to compile useful tips for language learning (like information on grammar) here! I’m interested in both the standards used in Mongolia (Khalkha) and in Inner Mongolia (Chakhar), differences in their pronunciation and vocabulary usage and so on. This includes learning both the Cyrillic writing system that represents the Khalkha pronunciation of Mongolia, and the more difficult traditional script that bridges all Mongolian dialects.
Some helpful resources I’ve found are:
Study Mongolian (website with lessons on Chakhar Mongolian, including the traditional script)
Elementary Mongolian by Kuribayashi and Hurelbator (a Japanese textbook teaching Chakhar Mongolian; its PDF and audio are hosted on the Study Mongolian website)
The CJV Language Site (has information on the Mongolian script as well as some reading lessons which are currently too advanced for me)
Lingua Mongolian (has some more info on the Mongolian script)
Bolor Dictionary (online dictionary with both Cyrillic and traditional script)
Mongolian Grammar by Kullmann and Tserenpil (a huge grammar book that includes both Cyrillic and traditional script; find it with a Google search)
There are also quite a few textbooks available that teach Khalkha Mongolian in the Cyrillic script, including the Routledge Colloquial Mongolian (audio available here). This book seems to start off with a lot of information and heavy grammar, so I wouldn’t start with it as an absolute beginner.
This site can convert between Cyrillic and traditional script.
It might take a while to figure out how to use (especially if you can’t read Mongolian yet), but this site lets you type in the Mongolian script, which is very helpful since most computers don’t seem to support the Mongolian script. You can also copy-paste Mongolian texts into it and change the font.
I’m not sure how active I will be updating this site since I’m quite busy with school, but I’m looking forward to posting more here!
