Hey!i love your style so much, it looks so dynamic and energetic while keeping it classy. I was wondering do you have any advice on simplifying the shapes of the body while keeping proportions? Also, how long have you been drawing? I am struggling a lot with making my art looks good and feeling natural and alive.
Oh man, thank you so much! I think this is the first time anyone’s called my art ‘classy’, I love it
Let’s see… I’ve been drawing regularly since about 2007/2008 (since I was 13 years old!) I’m terrible at explaining art techniques or making tutorials (I have a hard time explaining the thought process cuz it’s just like, something I do? I don’t really think that hard about what I do, I just do it, haha!)
BUT LET’S SEE IF I CAN GIVE ANY ACTUAL HELPFUL ADVICE… If you’re having trouble simplifying the human body, I’d recommend drawing over photographs and practicing that way!
Tumblr media
I did this in like, 30 seconds.
Quick and simple. Don’t think too hard about being precise in your draw-over. Try to use as few strokes as possible. Keep in mind where the joints are and how the legs/arms/chest curve. Copying the shapes will help your hand remember how to draw it without a reference.
I personally don’t use skeletons when I draw. I start at the face and then work my way down the figure, feeling out the proportions and the shapes as I draw. (I posted an example of what it looks like on this post over here.)
I think a reason my art tends to be dynamic & cartoonish but semi-proportionate is because of my early artistic influences - Bruce Timm (Batman: The Animated Series) and Eiichiro Oda (One Piece). I learned a lot about figures and shapes from drawing fanart for BTAS. The silhouettes in that series are fantastic, and I tried to copy its flow and simplicity for a lot of my formative drawing years. One Piece, on the other hand, has a ridiculously high amount of energy and emotion in every panel/shot. It helped me not be so afraid of really pushing facial expressions (especially regarding mouths and eyes/brows) and poses.
A tip I’d also give when you’re practicing and sketching in order to get a lively feeling from your figures: don’t use so many lines! Try doing long, quick strokes when laying out your figure - especially when working with the torso and arms/legs! If you want your work to feel less rigid, don’t think so hard about being ‘correct’ or ‘proportionate’! When you get stuck in a loop of tweaking and editing over and over, trying to get the anatomy to be ‘correct’, you lose the fluidity and motion! This is why people always say ‘I don’t want to do the lineart because it’s going to ruin the sketch’.
Learn the rules, learn your anatomy and proportions - and then do whatever you want. Art is art - it doesn’t have to be ‘correct’ to be good!
Remember: practicing is the only way to get better! I feel like people always want an easy shortcut on how to get good at drawing but like.. I’ve been drawing for about 11 years now, and I honestly believe I’ve only gotten ‘decent’ at what I do in the last two years, haha! You gotta just keep doing it.
Good luck!! Hope that helps!!

AYYY another Palette & Expression Meme, look at that. You may have to zoom in for details lol. 81 Expressions and 50 Palettes, go nuts guys. And since I know I will eventually get this question (or I won’t and people will just do it anyway) ASK ME before reposting. I may or may not already have it wherever it is you want it. Yes you may also just use it for practice. I personally will not be taking requests for this one as I’m trying to focus on getting commissions so I can afford a new computer~

things i did that forced me to be a better artist:
used a reference for everything
thinner line art (you think thats thin? go thinner….)
sketch, then do a cleaner sketch, THEN start finalizing
THUMBNAILS
color research, picking a set palette or light/dark for each work
you like that pose? redo it one more time
USE A DAMN REFERENCE
do not rely on stylization as an excuse for anatomy
draw the goddamn background you coward
just draw the hand- a bad hand is better than a hidden hand
the rule of thirds WORKS
take a considerable break between sketch and lines/paint
know that art takes longer as you get better at it
draw the seams on clothes
stop aiming for accuracy and focus on fluidity and motion, accuracy will come with practice of those two concepts
just…do the chiaroscuro. just DO IT. no excuses it always works
stop making excuses, make yourself an art schedule/set weekly(or daily) art goals and just DO IT.
