There's A Great Big Beautiful Tomorrow
Chapter 2: Crossed Over Into The Twilight Zone
“Son?”
“Mmn?”
“You’re falling asleep at breakfast again,” Bud chuckled over his newspaper.
Lewis sat up and shook his head. Dang it. He had been up late working on projects again and now he was dozing off while eating his toast. Again. Not his best habit.
“Oh goodness, the poor dear…” Lucille shook her head sadly as she walked into the kitchen, carrying a vase of flowers. “What’s wrong?” Bud turned to her.
“Some poor elderly woman fell into the Midtown Canal last night… They said she was treading water like nothing they’ve seen before, though. She must stay in shape.”
“Wow, how about that. Did they say if she was alright?”
“They took her to the hospital and will update the story later,” Lucille spoke as she adjusted the flowers.
Lewis thought about it as he went back to his breakfast.

There was a commotion at recess that day.
Lewis usually spent his recess brainstorming new ideas for inventions and taking notes in his journal. Today was no different… not at first, anyway.
Kids had begun to gather by the side of the school. Group after group they gathered, until finally the teachers came to see what all the excitement was about.
It was only when his new friend Franny came to see him, did he realize that the playground was completely empty. “Lewis! What are you doing over here? Did you see what happened?” “No?” Lewis shut his notebook, suddenly noticing how quiet it was.
“C’mon! Quick! You gotta see it!”
Lewis dropped his pencil and scrabbled to grab it when Franny began to drag him away, but gave up when he got out of reach. However, his attention shifted completely when they turned the corner and found a crowd of kids gathered, alongside some stumped adults. Murmurs and rumors drifted amongst the children as they observed the scene in front of them. Lewis gasped.
There was a large mural of Starry night painted across the side of the building…

In the office, a raven haired boy sat angrily in the office.
He hadn’t been compliant at all, and finally the principal had been called to deal with him.
“You don’t have permission to leave the campus without being signed out. I’m going to ask you this again. What are your parents’ phone numbers?”
“How many times do I have to say it? I-don’t-go-to-this-school!”
