Harnessing Census Data for Future Policies in Africa.
Tumblr media
The session aims to catalyze a transformative high-level dialogue and to showcase the groundbreaking potential of technology and artificial intelligence in enhancing the utility of census data for informed policy-making in Burkina Faso, Côte d'Ivoire, Ethiopia, Ghana, and Togo in the context of the 30th anniversary of the International Conference on Population and Development (ICPD30).
The ultimate goal is to bridge the gap between advanced data analytics and actionable policy insights, thereby contributing to the development of responsive, data-driven governance frameworks that can significantly improve livelihoods and drive sustainable development and the ICPD in the region.
Specific objectives
Provoke a thoughtful discussion, highlighting the successes and challenges faced by the countries involved, and explore future opportunities for technology in census data utilization, around 4 questions:
Innovation in Action: how Burkina Faso, Côte d'Ivoire, Ghana, and Togo have utilized/planned to use technological advancements, specifically AI and geospatial analysis, in their recent censuses to improve data quality and accelerate the availability of actionable insights for policy-making.
Bridging the Gap: Identify the main challenges and opportunities in integrating AI and geospatial technologies into the data analysis and policy formulation processes in West African contexts.
From Data to Impact: Provide examples of how geo-referenced and AI-processed census data have directly influenced policy decisions or service delivery improvements in your country.
Looking Forward: Considering the rapid evolution of technology, anticipate what next-generation innovations will further revolutionize the collection, analysis, and application of census data in the next decade.

Family Policy & Population Research Forum (CPD57 Side Event).
As it is highlighted by the latest report of UN Secretary-General on the implementation of the ICPD Programme of Action (E/CN.9/2024/2), the world is now entering into a pivotal phase of demographic transition. While rapid population growth continues to pose a challenge and an opportunity to a considerable number of countries worldwide, an important number of other countries are experiencing an increasing demographic decline and population ageing.
In this context, the present side event will showcase a review of some of the current academic literature related to population and family dynamics, examining what makes an effective policy, and discussing the success rate of policies intended to mitigate sub-replacement fertility from various national contexts. By doing so, the event will provide an opportunity for delegates, researchers and international policymakers to discuss how policy choices influence family formation and fertility, and supply evidence to inform future policy-making, so that Member States, together with all relevant stakeholders, can better support present and upcoming generations in their family goals and contribute to stabilizing fertility levels on the long term.

The Promise of a Demographic Dividend (CPD57 Side Event).
Africa's youth population offers immense potential, with three-quarters under 35, creating a demographic dividend. Despite challenges like gender inequality and high fertility rates, family planning policies have begun to shape a positive demographic transition. National Demographic Dividend Observatories (NODDs) in seven countries are driving progress, producing vital data and tools for policymaking.
At this high-level session, the focus will be on recognizing NODDs' contributions, addressing challenges, and advocating for renewed commitment to harnessing the demographic dividend.

Navigating Megatrends: The ICPD Programme of Action for a Sustainable Future - Launch of the ICPD30 Briefs.
UNFPA commissioned five visionary think pieces exploring how key ICPD themes are shaping the future in the midst of global megatrends.
At the 30th anniversary of the ICPD Programme of Action, the world is very different than it was in 1994, calling for new efforts to advance the objectives in 2024 and beyond. While all countries were growing in population in 1994, the world today is characterized by the greatest demographic diversity in history. At the same time, climate change has evolved into a global crisis and digitization and technology have penetrated the life of most, offering massive potential while at the same time opening divides and widening inequalities.
In light of the dramatic changes in the past 30 years, UNFPA commissioned five think pieces and corresponding ICPD30 Briefs to highlight the progress and challenges in advancing Sexual and Reproductive Health and Rights (SRHR) and investing in population data, and to examine how demographic diversity, climate change and digitization are transforming the future demands.
The ICPD30 Briefs launch event will take place at the margins of the 57th Commission on Population and Development, providing a unique platform for global leaders, policymakers, experts, and advocates to engage in meaningful discussions and reflections on the progress made and challenges ahead.
Join us for a discussion on future priorities and directions for achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and accelerating, advancing and amplifying the vision and principles of the ICPD!

Sexual and Reproductive Health and Rights: Central to Health, Well-Being, and Sustainable Futures (CPD57 Side Event).
This year marks the 30th anniversary of the International Conference on Population and Development (ICPD) Programme of Action, a consensus document which has provided the foundation for sexual and reproductive health and rights (SRHR) since 1994.
This event will champion evidence, experience and action to advance SRHR as central to health and sustainable development and examine inclusive solutions to address wider challenges of stigma, misinformation and political division.
Objectives
Highlight how and why each entity (panelist) has successfully approached centralizing SRHR and the tenets of the ICPD to achieve progress on health and intersections with key sustainable development priorities.
Celebrate and elevate the evidence for SRH as an essential element of PHC/UHC to accelerate action at the mid-point of the SDGs
Share evidence and advocacy/policy relevant issues for SRHR that are relevant for the Summit of the Future agendas with a focus on Future of SRHR topics: Adolescents and young people, digitalisation and climate change.

Transforming Lives: Celebrating ICPD's Impact on Choice and Autonomy (CPD57 Side Event)
The side event seeks to create a space for civil society organizations (CSOs) to reflect on the ICPD agenda, evaluate the progress and gaps in the implementation of the Programme of Action, and demonstrate its continued relevance for the realization of sexual and reproductive rights, gender equality, human rights and development agendas.
It further aims to provide a space for CSOs to be heard particularly in the context of increasing pushback to their inclusion in formal dialogues and relevant processes. Further, the event will bring together CSOs, Member States, UN agencies, and other stakeholders in assessing practical strategies to ensure the protection and implementation of SRHR commitments in the Programme of Action in a context of pushback against both SRHR and the ICPD framework.
In particular, the event aims to:
Provide a cross-regional and intersectional overview of the achievements over the last three decades since the adoption of the Programme of Action and assess the gaps between ICPD Programme of Action commitments and the current status of sexual and reproductive health and rights globally;
Demonstrate the need for greater support and coordination to counter the transnational pushback against SRHR and the ICPD agenda; and
Strategize on opportunities for future multilateral advocacy and policy actions to ensure the universal, equitable access to SRHR and the achievement of gender equality for women and girls in all of their diversity.
