"If... gosh, I don't know what a first date would look like with those two characters. I think, maybe, I don't know. Because Kara—my version of Kara— was so dweeby and quirky and she'd probably wanna do karaoke, but I don't know if that's something that Lena would be into."
You have seen more of the shokh [truth] of me than anyone has since…” Kara shook her head now, her eyes suddenly intense, spinning crystals of black and blue-red.
Lena wanted to scoff, turn away, but she was ensnared, as she suspected they both had been from the start, and she could not help but fall into the newly exposed reality of Kara’s eyes.
OR,
Kara defeats Reign and in the ensuing aftermath has to confront her trauma, her parents' legacy, and her life on Krypton. While journeying Kara recognizes she has to tell Lena who she is and face the possibility of losing her.
OR OR,
Kara faces the consequences of her actions after defeating Reign.
It happened on a Thursday. And it had nothing to do with assassination attempts or world destroying villains. It had to do with rain.
Rain had decided to pour down on National City. It was rare in this part of the country, but when Mother Nature decided to make it rain, it was oceanic level downpours.
Lena had been running a charity gala and Kara was there covering the event. They both got stuck rushing by foot in the rain as traffic was a disaster and Lena’s driver was stuck in it.
It was going fine until they both heard little whimpers coming from an alley.
Kara immediately tensed next to her and then whispered, “Hang on,” before she was moving toward the noise.
“Be careful,” had barely left Lena’s lips before she saw Kara crouching over a dark shape. The next thing she knew she was jumping out of her skin due to a succession of lightning striking not far away. She moved just the wrong way and she was quickly meeting the slippery pavement when all of a sudden she was staring up into Kara’s eyes. Kara effortlessly held a box in one hand while her other arm was cradling Lena’s body from head to back, a mere inch above the soaked pavement.
How was she staying upright?
There was a huff from the box and a puppy’s nose could just be seen and Lena’s eyes shifted toward it for a fraction of a second and then back to Kara’s and it clicked.
“Supergirl,” the word left Lena’s lips in a splash of anger, her eyes flashing even as rain pounded into them.
Kara is completely still. She is a mountain in a snowstorm. Her eyes are filled with fear, worry, and apology.
Lena can’t look at her any more.
She slides across the flooded sidewalk ruining her expensive dress. Her heels coming off at her quick actions. She gets to her feet and her eyes never leave Kara who is still parallel with the ground, the puppy and box still in her one hand, but her eyes are trained on Lena.
They are still for

and then Lena is running.
They don’t speak for weeks. Kara gives Lena space. She knows. Instead, she throws herself into…everything. She walks kids to school, stops fires, rescues pets, assists with teaching sports and math and photography. Builds houses and people’s furniture. She creates an entire article series highlighting different foods tied to history and cultures. Another series focused on individuals from different generations having discussions. She is doing everything possible, so she doesn’t think about Lena and the urge, deep in her bones, to go to her, to apologize. She knows Lena has to be the one to reach out.
It helps that Kysh is a very active and happy puppy. Kara didn’t have the heart not to take her in.
Everything changes when a series of aliens are left beat up and strung up in the streets. Kara turns her attention to figuring out who is behind it, but starts to hit roadblocks. Several evenings are taken up with Kara hunting down clues and interviewing many people. Then someone is taken from L-Corp.
Kara and Lena meet at the D.E.O. for a run down meeting. It goes better than Kara expects. They are both professional and focus on the work. Then end up working together a lot and everything is smooth, working as if they were cut from the same mold. Once everyone throws in the towel for the day, Kara smiles at Lena and starts to speak, but Lena cuts her off, looking her right in the eyes, “I’m only here because the work has to be done.” With that she turns and walks to the bank of elevators. Kara never takes her eyes off of Lena’s receding back, her cape settling back into the place, the only sound.
The next day they work together again. Alex looks between them several times throughout the day and tries to speak with Kara. Kara cuts her off with a wave of her hand turning her attention back to laying out a plan before the team. Kara doesn’t try to talk to Lena this time.
The day after that they are working together again. They are so so close to figuring out who has been targeting aliens. Kara had been looking at the crime scene photos, yet again, and suddenly it was right in front of her it was Derek Ames. She is so relieved that she rushes to Lena across the lab to start to explain how she figured it out. Just as she starts to theorize who Ames may be connected to, as there was no way he was working alone, Lena blurts out, “I hate you” and turns back to reports she had been combing over, the discussion clearly over. Kara blinks and almost rests her hand on Lena’s shoulder, but she pulls back and heads to the break room, eating two helpings of lasagna seems better than getting in an argument with Lena.
The following day they are in the field. They had been battling with Ames, it was intense as he had alien abilities and many weapons planted around. Kara and Lena were once again working completely in sync. Kara was tricking Ames while Lena was deactivating all the various grenades hidden within the warehouse. Kara could hear where he had the captives hidden, or at least, the ones that were still alive. She was striving to draw Ames away from Lena and the captives as she had seen the glint in his eyes when he had got sight of her. Supergirl was the prize he truly wanted. This reinforced why Kara felt he was working for someone else.
Chaos.
That is what reigned in the warehouse for what seemed forever. Kara had just about subdued Ames and Lena had stopped the grenades and rescued the captives when another being crashed down next to Kara and Ames.
Kara quickly moved to fight while keeping hold of Ames, but it was too much even for her and she had to let go.
Quickly both Ames and the newcomer doubled down against Kara and she was starting to lose ground when a sound bomb went off and a silent scream was ripped from Kara’s lips.
Her concentration broken, the newcomer slammed their weapon against the back of her knee and she wobbled more from the sound’s ricochet effecting her than the blow itself, but it was enough and then she was left covering her ears as she watched them escape.
A few moments later, Kara turned to check on everyone else and she saw that Lena's eyes were fixed on her from the van. Lena’s breath was coming hard and her heart was pounding. Kara paused for a moment, running her hands down the front of her suit, taking a moment to get the ringing in her ears to fade, and then walked over to her.
Lena met her eyes and calmly stated, “Wonderful, we’re done. I despise you and was only working with you to save these people. I don’t care about you.”
Kara took a smooth step forward. “I can hear your belahd zhor, your heartbeat, its rhythm hits a particular beat when you lie. It’s a rare occurrence, impossible to forget.” Kara took a firm step back, checking that everyone was safe, then she was in the air in pursuit of this now more complex threat.
A very special thanks to @lbbutch for the inspiration.
“I could never trust her again.” Lena was confident, the jab hitting her target with scalpel like precision. She turned to face the elevator doors again, but this time, she also locked the maelstron she was feeling back into its box. She was a Luthor and she wasn’t going to let anyone else trick her.
Kara maintained eye contact, her gaze steady on Lena, until everything flooded her super hearing; the words, the smugness, the finality in the beat of Lena’s heart. The floor, the world was swallowing her whole, she cast her eyes down, and turned to stone except for the liquid welling in her eyes.
It was the end. It was being put in that pod again. Being cut off from everything, everyone, she cared about.
Words started to leave Lena’s lips. But all Kara heard was how performative they were. She was acting. She was Lena Luthor, the unreachable statue, her shields were up.
And Kara couldn’t take it. She was caged again. Her heart had never felt this dead even in the Vrrosh Dokhahsh. She needed to rip it from her chest, burn it with heat vision. She had no need of it anymore. Not even the rage, always burning in part of it, was useful.
All of this was rushing and dragging her, cementing her cells together, she went to steady herself on the elevator railing and then there was a lurch and a loud crunch under her fingers. Her entire arm followed, slicing down the elevator wall like warm butter, as she collapsed to her knees.
“Kara, Kara, are you alright?” The tone in Lena’s voice is what pulled Kara from the bleak well she was swiftly sinking down. It was honest concern with a taut string of anger laced around it. But all Kara heard was the concern.
She blinked once, feeling the elevator shaft wall underneath her fingers, and then she slowly turned, meeting Lena’s eyes. She knew her decision was no guarantee of absolution, but there was no going back from this. She didn’t want to.
Kara’s heart had not beat, she had not faked a breath, since she realized she had smashed through the elevator wall. “I’m an alien. My real name is Kara Zor El. I’m from Krypton.”
The rage that had been pressing down on Lena had been all consuming, the lies she's been told by Kara had drilled themselves into her heart, yet, she reached out, fingers gripping tightly to Kara's jacket and dragging her up, closer.
Kara didn’t resist, she followed easily, until they were breathing the same air, until they're pressed tightly to one corner of the carriage, until Lena's rage gets lost somewhere between the emptiness in Kara's eyes and the tears that were trailing down her face.
Kara heard Lena’s fingers smoothing back and forth over the lapel of her jacket and their faces were aligned, eyes caught, but Kara was seeing nothing.
She had one more shokh for Lena, it was the biggest of all.
“I’m Supergirl.” Somehow the words slipped out of Kara’s mouth, as if she was always meant to say them. Inside, she was adrift, downing in a dark sea of her own mistakes.
Lena wanted to move her hands, run them over Kara’s shoulders, loosen the tension there, give her a hug, but she was frozen by the anger in her veins. Staring into her best friend’s eyes, so close to her own in the corner of this broken elevator carriage.
She wondered what Kara looked like without her glasses, not Supergirl, but Kara. At a game night, what would she look like? Lena, once again, resisted pulling Kara any closer than she had.
“I know I lied. I betrayed you.” Kara’s eyes were locked with hers now. Lena searched but found nothing in them and that scared her more than anything else had in her life.
Kara took in Lena’s imperceptible nod and continued, “I’ve been overwhelmed and afraid, lost my way. Absolutely, not an excuse, but you deserve the truth.” The air from the elevator shaft drifted over them moving the bottom of Lena’s ponytail. The smell of her honey melon shampoo washed over Kara’s senses. She savored how close they were, for a moment, absorbing it into her shesur, “I am sorry, truly. I hope this is a bridge for us.” With that Kara took a step back and picked up the bag of ice cream Lena had dropped in the excitement. Then she performed a few key superspeed hits on the elevator and it started to lift the rest of the way toward Alex’s floor.
