Minecraft Meet-up in Peterborough The Event is Described As 'awful'
Minecraft meet-up in Peterborough described as "awful"
14 September 2015
Parents of Minecraft gamers are furious at the lack of activities and queues at an unofficial convention.
About 4,100 people were at MineVention at the Peterborough Arena on Saturday to meet star players and take part in games.
However, many said they were waiting for hours to meet idols or eat food , and demanded refunds.
Organiser Lisa O'Brien said the queues were too long, and she'll issue a statement about refunds in due course.
The event is not associated with Minecraft developer Mojang and was started in Ireland. It was the first time it was held in the UK.
TV presenter
It offered fans of the worldwide gaming smash Minecraft which lets players construct many different objects with cubic blocks - the chance to meet some of the most famous "Youtubers", get photographs and play games.
The event, which featured the TV's Gadget Show presenter Jason Bradbury as well as a call to fans to dress as the game's character Steve to attempt to break the world record.
Then it came under criticism on social media with people complaining about long queues, a lack of food and merchandise stalls, and activities for fans.
Vicky Abraham posted on Facebook that she had queued with her son, who is five years old, for more than an hour just 30 seconds on a computer.
Another parent said she waited 45 minutes for an empty water bottle, and said the experience was "appalling" with nothing to do. Another parent called the BBC to report that they left the venue after 30 minutes due to the long lines and that her son was "crying all the way home."
A few people have posted on Facebook that they were satisfied with the event, with one of them wrote: "I thought your event was great for PS15."
Lisa O'Brien of O'Brien Event Management said that she sympathized with parents as we all have children. Due to the huge number of people that showed at the event, rather than purchasing tickets in advance, queues were 45 minutes long, she said.
She stated that the convention was unprecedented in scale and that some official merchandise didn't arrive in time for the event to begin. EJAC.ORG
She added that organizers had "taken into consideration everyone's comments, suggestions and suggestions" and that they would be meeting in order to resolve any issues. A second statement will be made on Monday night.
