Yeah, a hair vinegar treatment didn't make sense to me either, at first. I'm finicky about shampoo scents; surely vinegar isn't something that should find its way to my head. But it smells a lot better than its name suggests, and works wonders for your mane![[MORE]]

I think every person I meet is a chance to become a better person myself. Who they become and what they choose to do are things that I cannot control. So I try not to lose sleep over that.

Do you cut tubes open when you can no longer squeeze anything out? Chances are, they aren't quite empty yet! This little hack got me at least two more uses of my favorite Canmake Mermaid UV Gel sunscreen, although do note that there are special considerations to doing this.
Tumblr media
I open tubes by cutting across the tube seal, then down through the middle of the back flap. If you want keep the tube somewhat presentable (for photos of empties, whatever) you can use a box cutter to carefully cut through the back portion only. I also cut a bit across the sides so the incision looks like a T. This makes it easier to pull the tube open and reach into.
Clean your spatula and decant container. I doused these with Kurin water just to try, but normally use alcohol since it evaporates quickly and doesn't need to be wiped dry. Use the spatula to scrape the product into your container. Avoid touching the product with your fingers to minimize contamination. Seal and label.

Important considerations:
1) Products in tubes are formulated for tubes, meaning they shouldn't be exposed to air. Decanting makes them unstable and, in the case of sunscreen, possibly less effective. So you really should only decant if there are just a couple of uses left, and make sure to use them up ASAP. Like, within 2 to 3 days tops.
2) Products are best decanted into similar containers. Packaging isn't just about how a product looks; it also has to consider how the formulation interacts with the container's material. I'm not a materials expert so I wouldn't be able to tell if they're the same kind of plastic, but I chose this pot container because it has opaque walls. Products can degrade faster when exposed to sunlight, which is why you can only find certain skincare in opaque containers.
3) Even with all these precautions, the quality of the decanted product can really suffer and trigger a sudden negative reaction in your skin. If you have very reactive skin, it may be best to pass on this hack.

So much product was left in the tube! It filled about half of my 10ml jar, so to do a little math:
I collected 5ml worth of product. The tube is 40g. That's 12.5% I might have thrown out if I didn't hack this. Depending on how much the product is and whether you have little risk of getting an adverse reaction, it may be a project worth doing.

To soothe my anxiety and curb my shopping impulses, I've begun doing an inventory of my makeup collection. I had been meaning to create product swatches for easy reference, and the project turned out to be a great way of having fun with makeup without actually putting it on.
Tumblr media
I started with my cheek color collection--a category that I feel have too many products for. Five is a lot, considering that it takes a while to finish one blush! I also had to laugh when I realized that everything was some shade of peach, except for a rogue neon pink that I like using for Jbeauty inspired looks.
Tumblr media
Swatching was a little trickier than I had expected, so it's best to do practice swatches on your chosen paper. I also initially planned on using my fingers, but found that a brush allowed me to blend on paper better.
Liquid and cream formulas are particularly difficult because the pigment tends to saturate the paper quickly. To soften the effect, lightly blot and swirl the product on the back of your hand before applying to the paper.
Tumblr media
I also made swatches of my highlighters, more to fill up the page than anything. I used my fingers to pack the pigments on, but they don't show up well on paper. Still, they look quite lovely when you place them at an angle to catch the light.
If you blend the pigments well and wait for them to dry and set before closing the page, the colors shouldn't transfer to the opposite page. Should they do, you can insert another sheet between pages. For lipsticks, I'm trying to get some clear acetate to act as a makeshift pane.

Hello.
It's been a while since I last wrote in longform, and more than a decade since I kept a blog. I'm reviving the habit because FB and IG aren't really the best platforms to show the kind of stories I love creating. I hope this space allows me (and you!) to better appreciate content on beauty, food, various home concerns, and, of course, cats.
Welcome to my head.
