A/N: Still technically on hiatus but ya girl gotta get this in at the… very last minute bc I signed up, so I gotta commit lol.
Written for Kari/ @until-theend-oftheline’s 1k MCU Writing Challenge. My prompt, which is bolded in the text, was “You two came busting in here like a house on fire. Guns waving, the jawlines and the hair. It’s very intimidating.” Changed slightly to fit the context but basically the same.
The reader is a mutant with healing powers. She uses she/her and has younger twin siblings.
“And why, might I ask, do you have a giant 8-bedroom, 6 and a half bathroom cabin in the middle of nowhere?” Tony blurted out as the van crested over the hill. “I thought you said this was a safe house.”
“It is,” you huffed as you rolled your eyes and Tony put the car in park. Everyone piled out of their respective vehicles as you continued, up the few steps to the door. Your whole body still ached from the fall you took on the last mission. Stuck between a horde of goons and a window, you had taken the chance and launched yourself out the window to the street below. If not for Sam, they’d likely have seen one too many of your organs last night.

One particular model - the new ST400 - becomes a personal project of Mr. Stark’s. He could never have known that interactions with a particular young Avenger would impact his project in ways he could never have imagined.”

Author’s Notes: Thanks for being so supportive of the concept I pitched for this series! First chapters/parts are always really hard because you want to establish a world and characters without being an expositional explosion. Tony had sent Peter a message late one night saying there was a mandatory meeting for those involved in the Avenger Initiative. He was to be at the Compound early the next morning. Tony couldn’t have known Peter planned a spur of the moment movie marathon at Ned’s that very night. Ultimately, his text was left unread - drowned out by loud and lengthy debates between Peter and Ned about the Star Wars franchise until the two of them passed out.
Peter woke up the next morning to a not-so-happy Happy pulling him out of a very confused Ned’s home. It was then when Peter finally looked at his phone, blame quickly set in. It was still early, so Peter rested his tired head against the window of the car as Happy drove. The ride was long, but the guilt Peter felt kept him from falling back asleep. Eventually, Happy lightened up enough to turn on the radio. Soon the New Avengers Facility came into view.
“So what’s this mandatory meeting about anyway?” Peter asked, his temple still pressed against the glass.
“No clue, kid. Tony said it was a surprise. Something he’s been planning for a while,” Happy pulled up to the main entrance, giving Peter a slightly annoyed look as he stopped the car, “By the way, you made us pretty friggin late. Get in there, kid. I’ll catch up.”
Peter obeyed and got out of the car. He ran up the steps, hoping Mr. Stark wouldn’t be at the top to lecture him about his lack of communication. Once Peter stepped through the glass doors into the lobby, he fully realized how quiet it was. No people were walking around, no staff members stood at the front desk, no janitors on duty - no one was around. At least, that’s what Peter thought. It didn’t take long for him to hear footsteps approaching, echoing off the marble floor. He turned to see a handsome, well dressed, young man - not much older than himself - walking towards him quite confidently.
“Hello, Mr. Parker.” The young man stood professionally, with perfect posture and kind eyes.
“Uh… hello?” Peter was a little shy. He’d made visits to the Compound regularly enough that he recognized the staff and knew most of their names. However, this person was a new face.
“I’m glad I recognized you,” the man smiled and gave a gentle nod, “It’s a pleasure to finally meet you, Mr. Parker.”
Peter felt weird being spoken to in such a manner by someone that could’ve easily been a classmate of his. Peter wasn’t even an official Avenger yet - or a professional anything for that matter. The only person he associated Mr. Parker with was Uncle Ben.
“Mr. Parker?” Peter began, “You don’t have to call me that. Just Peter’s okay.” Peter worried that might’ve sounded rude, but the man just gave him another soft smile.
“Delighted to meet you, Peter.” He held out his hand, not once breaking eye contact. Peter returned the smile and shook the man’s hand. His grip was firm but somehow friendly - it felt genuine and trusting. Peter found himself staring just a bit. The man’s eyes were so bright and focused he could hardly look away. Peter noticed how awkward he was being to this stranger once he realized he was holding the young man’s hand for a few seconds too long.
“I uh…” he stammered as he let go, “So what’s your-”
“I’m very sorry, Peter,” the man interrupted, “We are actually in a bit of a rush. Mr. Stark has been waiting for you.”
“Oh crap, I completely forgot!” Peter exclaimed. He did, in fact, forget all about Mr. Stark’s so-called mandatory meeting - the whole reason he was here. Now his schoolboy nerves were going a mile a minute, and he didn’t know where to begin. The man cocked his head, seeming to notice Peter’s distress.
“You’ve arrived later than anticipated and Mr. Stark has instructed me to take you to the courtyard. Please, Follow me.” The man turned, signaling with his index finger for Peter to follow.
“O-Okay!” Peter obeyed.
Together the two walked down the long hallway. Peter looked around. Still, there was no one to be found. Where was everyone? The silence of the facility made the echoing of the man’s fancy dress shoes that much more prevalent. Peter soon caught himself gawking again. This young man was so well put together, walked with such confidence, and had a certain gracefulness to his strides. He just seemed so young. Perhaps he was an intern or something.
As the two finally made it to the courtyard, the silence was finally broken by hushed whispers all around. Compound personnel and faculty filled the courtyard. No one seemed to notice Peter, as they were all aimed at the center of the lawn. Peter looked through the crowd to see another smaller group of people, all lined up perfectly in matching black and white uniforms. Each of them stood stoically as their neon blue armbands reflected off one another. A single standing microphone was all that divided the two groups.
“About time, kid.” Tony appeared, patting Peter on the back - Pepper in tow close behind.
“Mr. Stark! H-Hey! Sorry about the-” Peter tried to stutter out an apology he had yet to formulate. Pepper just laughed to herself.
“Don’t worry about it. Just glad you’re here for the announcement.” Tony gave one more firm pat as he marched through his staff and colleagues towards the microphone.
“Announcement? For what?” Peter asked the young man and Pepper but received no response. They were too fixated on Tony as he reached the center, turning to face his audience. The courtyard fell silent. Tony tapped the microphone to confirm it was on.
“Good morning everyone,” Tony began, “Sorry to have pulled you from your work so early in the day but I wanted everyone here for this special announcement.”
“I’m sure by now you’ve noticed the group standing behind me. If not, well you’re blind,” Tony joked, “…and we’ll have to talk about that another time.” There was quiet laughter. Tony certainly knew how to work a crowd. Peter himself let out a small chuckle at his mentor. Once it died down, he continued his speech.
“About a month ago, I was invited to the Annual Investor & Shareholder Conference at CyberLife. I’ve been friends with the CEO Elijah Kamski for a while now, and I believe in his vision for what Androids can do for the world.” He looked over his shoulder, giving a glance at the group behind him. They remained unphased. He turned back to his staff.
“Starting today, this facility has an additional new wing of staff. Android staff that is.” His words echoing across the crowd caused the silence of the courtyard to break. Peter scanned the room. Some people seemed unaffected by this news, while others noticeably had their reservations. CyberLife - and Androids as a whole - have been controversial since the company began selling them commercially and they started appearing on a day-to-day basis. Working for the Avengers was already a strange work environment with gods, aliens, and mutants running around, but this addition to the team still caused quite a stir.
“These Androids are fully equipped to help the rest of you in aiding the Avenger Initiative. And I don’t have to pay them.” Tony joked again, this time receiving no laughter. People were on edge now. “They are not here to replace you. They are here to assist with your work, your training, and anything else that happens here at the Compound,” Tony turned and stood next to the nearest Android - a young woman. He placed his hand gently on her shoulder as she looked up at him with a smile.
“Please, treat them with respect as you would any other colleague,” he asked “Thank you, everyone. You may return to your stations.” With that, both groups slowly dispersed to various exits around the area. Tony made his way back to Peter, Pepper, and the young man.
“I think that went well.” Pepper said hopefully.
“Are you kidding? Half of them are terrified - either about the Androids themselves or about losing their jobs,” Tony sighed with frustration, “I just hope everyone can play nice. I really wanna do Elijah proud with this partnership.”
“Your staff got comfortable with Vision, another type of Android,” the young man chimed in, “Albeit it’s a different situation, I’m sure your team will grow to value this collaboration just as much as you do, sir.”
“Which reminds me,” Tony placed one hand on Peter and another on the young man, “We’ve got a lot of work to do.” He gave a playful wink to Pepper as she left for her office. The three then proceeded down the hall, Tony and the young man taking the lead.
“Work? What work, Mr. Stark?” Peter piped from the back.
“Since Bruce isn’t here, I needed someone to assist me with a project involving the CyberLife collaboration. Besides, I think you’re the perfect person for this job.” Tony continued for the lab, not once stopping to look in Peter’s direction. He seemed very eager - but for what?
“Me? Really?” Peter had so many questions, but all this information was coming so fast he didn’t know where to begin or what to ask first. He looked at the young man again. Peter still hadn’t gotten his name. Why was he coming along? Peter once again thought to himself that this must be a new intern, or maybe a liaison sent from CyberLife to oversee Tony’s latest project.
Tony reached the lab, the facial recognition scanner beeping as the glass doors swung open. Once inside, the doors shut quickly behind them, another beep to signal its lock from the outside. The young man proceeded to walk to the hospital-style bed in the center of the lab and sat down. Peter was more confused than when he arrived. Tony grabbed something from the nearby desk and stood beside the man, placing a circular light panel onto his right temple. It clicked into place as a blue hue emulated from the light.
“There you go. I’ve updated your LED so now any severe changes or alerts get sent directly to me. You feel okay?” Tony leaned down to look into the man’s eyes.
“Yes, Mr. Stark. I feel fine.” He just smiled at Tony reassuringly.
“Wait… you’re a-” A wave of realization finally hit Peter.
“An Android? Yes.” The man said with a gentle tone in his voice.
