I also think it was important to show onscreen what his relationship with Will looks like when Nancy (a pretty standard teenage distraction for a romantically-inclined guy) and Joyce (the primary caregiver for Will) aren’t around. It adds weight to his conflict over wanting to follow his dreams vs. follow Nancy vs. stay stagnant to support Joyce and Will.
We see Jonathan start s4 seemingly more disconnected from Will than before, but it’s artificially induced by the weed (a which parallels Nancy in that it’s a fairly typical teenage distraction for those that are into it). And it’s not like Jonathan wasn’t somewhat disconnected from Will in s3 as well (Will went through the whole kidnapping Billy plot and the rain fight alone/only with other kids because Jonathan was with Nancy— not a judgement on Jonathan ofc).
But as soon as Joyce leaves in s4 and Jonathan realizes how serious everything is, he starts returning to the s1-2 Jonathan that we remember in that he’s there for Will, he’s sober, he’s attentive to the little things. In some ways this is good (Will getting that assurance that his family will love him no matter what is important), but it’s also putting Jonathan back into the parentified role that makes him afraid that he can’t leave his family. Functionally: Jonathan’s s4 character arc addressed his issues by making them worse. Which is going to ensure his issues are more dramatic in s5/that he and Nancy aren’t out of problems to tackle now that they’re back in Hawkins together. Hence why it’s necessary that he doesn’t tell her the truth at the end of s4, because it’s interlinked with what they seem to be setting up for s5.
Which is why I at least HOPE he won’t die in s5, and will instead get to complete his arc by coming to an understanding that Will is going to be okay (another reason why I don’t think they can kill Will— I don’t believe Jonathan would be able to leave Joyce’s side in the wake of that and he NEEDS to leave his family to complete his arc without it being heartbreaking in a potentially dissatisfying way).
the "they forgot about jonathan's character development" crowd must have missed the part of season 4 where he finally did something other than follow nancy around like a lost puppy for the first time since the show's inception

We all think that the wheelers haunt the supernatural subplots etc etc with the exception of the russian subplots but i hate to announce that the wheelers also haunt the russian subplots too. Theyre everywhere.

when you get this, put 5 songs you actually listen to, then publish. send this ask to 10 of your favourite followers. (non-negotiable, positivity is cool) ~
Ooo…
1) Machi Bhasad by Bloodywood. I honestly love all of their stuff, but this one’s the one I’ll find myself casually singing— also “Hey there, hi, I’m ready to die [squeaky dog toy sound]” always gets me.
2) The (Shipped) Gold Standard by Fall Out Boy. Again, honestly the whole album would be on my list. It was my first FOB album and it rewrote my brain chemistry, but “I wanna scream ‘I love you’ from the top of my lungs, but I’m afraid that someone else will hear me” truly etched itself onto my closeted, in-love-with-my-best-friend queer teenage soul.
3) Hero by Pegboard Nerds and Elizaveta. My boyfriend loves EDM so I’ve picked up a bit of his tastes by proxy, and this one slaps. Also, it’s so heavily associated with some of my all time favourite OCs that I will love it forever.
4) Eat Your Young by Hozier. This is a more recent addition, but I’m working on a creative project that this has become the unofficial theme song for in my head, so I’ve been listening to it a lot recently.
5) Monster by Walking on Cars. This is just fun to listen to. Put an earbud in both ears and walk around with it playing, and you feel good. Simple recipe.

I’m sure it’s fine :)
I mean. S3-4 Mike sure consistently seems good and normal and not like something’s wrong at all :)
The fact that there's a fake death at the end of every single season except 2 is very suspicious

My personal crowning achievement was the time in high school when I was having my boyfriend (then best friend) read over an essay, and there was one sentence which he read, like, ten times in a row, then looked up at me in despair and was like “this sentence is four and a half lines long, it has twelve commas, and the worst part is all of them are technically grammatically correct and I can’t figure out how to reword this sentence to make it shorter or more comprehensible”.
the unsolvable mystery of how many commas a writer can put into a single sentence

…okay, the Weirder Shit whole cast roleswap au might actually be happening.
I may or may not be working on the second chapter right now. We’ll see how it goes because I will not start posting unless/until I have the whole first season rewritten. But maybe sometime this year…

Could potentially also explain why the gate just keeps popping back open, too. Need to maintain that connection to the heart in order to maintain life/existence, because even if the heart’s not dead it’s useless if it’s disconnected.
(And they could definitely do something really interesting with the idea of the gates not being able to close permanently while some key part of the UD is still on the Rightside up. Which would then also lead into prime red herring territory about Will/El/the wonder twins in general regarding whether one or both of them are too tied to the UD to be able to coexist on the Rightside Up with the gates closed)
(If nothing else, it would be fun— read: heartbreaking— for me, personally, to watch Mike going from “nobody’s touching either of them we’ll figure something else out” mode into “well if I’m the problem then take me off the board” mode.)
mike's possession was different from the beginning. closing the gate while will was possessed (<- normal possession) would have killed him. actually doing it while mike was possessed (<- abnormal possession) didn't affect him at all
probably because killing the brain/heart actually means killing mike. it all stems from him. that's why the monsters can't touch him without killing themselves too
staring so hard at will's line about "what if we locked him out here with us" right now

I hate this.
Jason’s whole thing about shotguns having a lot of power but not much range does legitimately sound like he’s about to launch into suggesting a different weapon— maybe a handgun that’s harder to redirect, maybe a rifle that can be used at a longer range, maybe (metatextually) a weapon that isn’t a gun because guns don’t work on the UD in general— but instead he just brings up Mike?? It’s a weird segway in context, and on a meta level it connects Mike with the idea of EITHER a) being a weapon alternative to a gun (hello manifestation theory/Vecna!Mike theory), b) being a weapon that is being redirected (hello possessiongate), or c) being in some way a tool with limited range (hello without heart we’d all fall apart).
I hate this because it is such a nonsensical thing to have in the show because let’s be real. Nancy could have just made a sawed off shotgun on her own. Or they could have had her use it once in a short action sequence and learn this that way (cutting down on the unnecessary Jason screen time) and then saw it off. Or they could have just had her choose a different powerful gun. But even if it HAD to happen this way, why bring Mike up like this? It feels so random. What made Jason jump from the gun to Mike? I guess maybe the assumption that Nancy was getting a gun to protect him from the mob? It’s still very weird.
And then add on top of it all the comparison you have above, and I hate it here, actually.

Okay no, you know what? I’m breaking my silence.
Demiro Mike slaps, and there’s nothing anyone can do about it.
To be 100% honest, my actual original Mike headcanon was that he was aroace. This held up through my first watch of s4 (yes, I could see the Mike/Will stuff, but I did not particularly think there was any hope of them going through with it because I am a jaded old man— same reason I still have to hedge when I talk about it because I can’t bring myself to say “when” and not “if”). It was only when I rewatched the s4e1 caf scene where I realized that I couldn’t explain it any other way than that Mike was in some way attracted to Eddie. Which then coupled with some other clues plus his dynamic with Will made me unfortunately have to (on a personal level— no shade to anyone who maintains an aroace Mike headcanon, it just personally isn’t mine anymore) retire the aroace Mike headcanon.
But demiro Mike, imo, still fits all the info we have (not just in the blanks but it would actively explain some stuff), and you can pry it from my cold, dead hands.
