I just read something about some fanfic readers on TikTok, mostly younger ones, are against AO3 because it doesn't recommend fic to them. As in, it doesn't track them and auto-feed them content using an algorithm.
I am sure it's not every younger fanfiction-reading nerd. But....
The generational divide between old internet and new internet users is so stark sometimes. Like. That younger people don't remember the individual fanfiction websites days... okay. I get that. Some of them weren't even born and time is time and it moves on. It's fine.
But to grow up with an internet where you do not get a choice, or not much of a choice, except to be fed content? Oh wow that's a yikes I've never thought about before.
Yeah, there's some filter capabilities but companies override that all the time with subtle little changes. Youtube recommends stuff constantly (often conservative videos even to me who has no history of watching or liking that shit). Twitter and Facebook got rid of chronological posts and even when you try to get rid of suggested posts, they come back. Instagram is basically all ads now. And then TikTok literally doesn't even ask you to search (and as I recall, their search function sucks), and you can like videos to change what you see *a little* but ultimately the algorithm will lead you wherever it wants.
That's so sad to grow up with that. Choice and searching and relying on your judgment and the recommendations of people you like... those are good things.
I am not like "oh those youths!" here. I am "fuck these corporations!" here. Look at this shit. It's not a rec list from someone you like and trust--it's what corporate has decided you should like. And a lot of these kids have not known anything else. That's scary and infuriating.

It’s like warm bread with butter. Kind of just, like, nice, you know? But with her it’s… Have you ever had pizza?

Apple Juice & Peach
Pairing: Greta Gill/Carson Shaw Rating: Explicit (E) Notes: I love a good song fic! Word Count: ~6.5k Warnings: Not a whole lot to warn you about - Carson has some me time, but even that’s pretty tame! Summary:
Greta's world changes the instant Carson Shaw comes into her life. From the way she looks to the way she smells, Greta takes it all in on her journey to navigate the sloshing waters her tumultuous relationship with Carson creates. Read to find out what happens when all five of her senses come together just in time for Greta to realize how deep she really is.
Or, a 5(+1) set to a Dodie song.
i. sight
Greta is moved by Carson Shaw before she even knows her name.
It starts like any other day. Her and Jo recklessly travelled across the country to chase a pipe dream – it’s the fourth time they’ve done so since they left New York all of those years ago. Greta tries not to let herself think that a women’s professional baseball league is going to be like all her previous failures. It’s hard to ward off those thoughts, however – luck hasn’t been on their side lately and Greta’s constantly in the dumps about it. When the world shifts on its axis, Greta and Jo are arguing about a map. It’s such a simple thing and yet Greta looks back on that moment like a scientist would a specimen under the lens of a microscope. There’s a clear before and after feeling. Before she notices Carson Shaw, Greta’s world is gray and bland. It’s like the eggs she ate on the train that morning. There’s no salt or life or purpose in her existence at all. After her eyes find that gorgeous woman on the street, Greta sees things in color for the first time in more than a decade. The substantial shift is like a punch to the gut Greta’s still not over. Her entire being is sore from the world’s drastic tilt on its side.
Things only gets worse when Jo starts to heckle her. Greta knows without a doubt that she’s going to let the lost girl follow them; she doesn’t even need to think it through. Her doe eyes are big and brown and looking at them with such a glance of longing, Greta can’t help herself. She’s always been a sucker for a beautiful damsel in distress. It’s easy to say “then let’s go” after Carson rebuts Greta’s joke about not looking like competition because that one sentence is so much more than enough to already grab Greta’s attention. Never mind the fact that having the woman near gives Greta the opportunity to look at her some more. She gets to take in the blue uniform that brings out pale skin and long hair that does this person’s beauty so much injustice. In the span of those first few moments, Greta comes to the conclusion that Carson is so nice to look at that it just might be a problem. When they turn a corner, Greta forces herself away from her new distraction in order to clear her head – a little nicotine always does the trick.
Handing over their new friend’s cigarette, Greta’s brand new world is already torn to pieces at the sight of a wedding ring. Most of the time, Greta rejoices at the idea of entangling herself with a married woman. The affairs are usually fun and fast and filled to the brim with a glorious lack of commitment on both ends. It’s easier to bed a woman that isn’t looking for anything other than sexual pleasure and a little comfort from someone that understands her desires. For some reason, Greta’s stomach turns this time around. Wedding rings are usually a green light but this one feels like a huge stop sign she wasn’t expecting. Her distaste for marriage as a whole comes out in her shitty attitude. Greta can’t stop the “this is really boring” that rolls so easily off of her tongue – it’s only boring because Greta isn’t able to stand the thought of someone else having a claim on the beauty before her. It’s a blow to her confidence that Greta’s not expecting.
