A light drizzle greeted us during our lunch break. Butterflies were flying wild and I along with a classmate ran after them to catch a few. We were so engrossed that we missed the school bell and by the time we realized and reached our class, we were almost drenched. The teacher duly punished us of course. I was in Class 4 and like most kids, was fascinated by butterflies.
Later that day, after reaching home I told my mother about the fun we had catching butterflies. She told me that one should never catch a butterfly, as touching them would make their wings heavy and that would hamper their flying. I never tried to catch one by the wing from that day.
Decades later, while shooting birds, I also photographed butterflies, bugs, flowers and what not. But, my interest in butterflies increased many folds after I met Chandrima. She is a butterfly enthusiast and the trips with her have been rich with butterflying adventure.
This photograph is of the Painted Lady (Vanessa cardui) butterfly, which is the most widespread of all butterfly species.

He is known as Grandfather Miroslav and he likes to busk at the Novi Sad city centre wearing his traditional attire. He has spent his life doing forest and agricultural work, but now he earns a living through his music. He is a self-taught musician and can play the fiddle, flute and harmonica. On this day, he had a beautiful admirer and he played for her for a long time.

A Cyclone and a Bird
The word cyclone never fails to trigger anxiety and distress after the harrowing experience of the Extremely Severe Cyclonic Storm Fani. The wind gusts not only bring along memories of the hardships faced for the next few months but also of a tiny life fighting to stay alive. This write-up is about that little one.
After spending more than four hours on the ground floor, we had returned on our 15th floor apartment. The wind speed had decreased from 205 kmph to about 70-80 kmph gusting to around 100 kmph. We were happy that no major damage had happened, though the window and door frames were caving in at one time, which had prompted us to move to a safer level.
The plastic net that we had put up in our balconies, to save our cat #MonchuMeow from any accident, had been completely taken apart by the strong winds.

While checking the bedroom balcony, Santanu saw something moving in a corner. A closer look revealed it to be a bird, a Little Swift, also known as Indian House Swift. As the name suggests, it is so little that the wingspan is only 33cm.

It tried to move away from him but could not get much farther as it was totally drenched. Santanu picked it up but could not risk bringing it inside because of my cat, who has proven himself to be a terrific hunter. So, our first move was to take the cat and put it in a separate room and close the door. Next, we brought the little one inside in another closed room, so that we could free the cat.

We could not use the hair-dryer because we did not have electricity, so Santanu used a tissue paper to wipe off excess water from the bird’s feathers and wings. After a while of sitting on Santanu’s warm hands, the Swift felt safe and even started flapping its wings slowly when spoken to, to show happiness. It was magical.

After drying out its feathers, it tried to fly but instead of flying up it went downwards. Maybe it had lost a lot of energy fighting with Fani. As it was getting dark outside, Santanu put it in a little box to recuperate. We intentionally did not feed the bird, as first, we wanted it to recover from the shock and second, we did not have any food that we could offer a Swift.
The next morning, I was in charge of the cat while Santanu went into the room the bird was in. When he moved the flap of the box, he found the bird in the same position he had kept him the night before. It was not moving a bit. Santanu dreaded the worst and slowly pushed him with a finger. No response. He then tried to pick it up and it was then that the Swift moved and opened its eyes, as if to say, ‘Is it morning already?’
Santanu first checked whether it was strong enough to fly. He did a much better job than the previous night and was able to fly properly. Santanu then took him to the balcony. The bird looked into the blue sky for a few minutes and then flew away. As long as Santanu could see, he saw the Swift flying far away from him. The long rest had given him enough strength to go back to wherever he belonged.
This whole episode had been such a wonderful and surreal experience for us and will always be a silver lining. No matter how much concern an impending cyclone brings, each time the little bird will come back in our minds to give us hope and courage.

1 January 2020
The first day of the decade ... the first day of the year ... and the weather is cloudy and chilly. I call it nothing short of blasphemy. I mean, it is the first day of the next 365 days to come. Isn’t it supposed to set the mood and pave way for happier things for the rest of the year? The only silver lining would be the appearance of the mighty Kangchenjunga in the distance. Unfortunately though, it is not enough to motivate me to start the year the way I would have wanted it to.
As is evident, I did not spend the New Year at home. I was in Jhandi, in north Bengal on a trip with my friend and her daughter. This was the first time too, when I ushered in the New Year away from my hubby.
We decided to not let the gloomy weather dampen our spirits and ventured out in search of possible butterflies and birds after breakfast. The walk was good but not a single butterfly was to be seen. Birds were few and common, but visible at least.
Post lunch, we decided to walk without carrying our heavy cameras since the butterflies were taking a day off. I managed to collect few orchids which had fallen from the trees.
This year, like many of the previous years, I decided not to make any resolutions. Just the exhaustion of breaking those was getting on my nerves, really. But, I have decided to do something different. We always tend to remember the bad things that have happened in a year, but very easily forget the ones that put a smile in our hearts. Therefore, I have decided to keep a track of all the good and not so good things that happen to me this year, on a daily basis. That way, I can count the good moments at the end of the year and am sure it would outnumber the not so good experiences.
Good: It has been a tradition with me for the last 3 years to buy plants on the first day of the year and this year too I managed to get some new plants (the orchids mentioned above) which made me happy.
Not so good: Cloudy weather and no luck with the birds and butterflies.
