i completely forgot that most people don't find new shows by scrolling tumblr and seeing someone being obsessed with a character/show/ship and going "yeah i'm going to invest hours into my this show so i can be obsessed with it too"

i think. i think we have to change how we think about pets, specifically mammalian pets. shift it to how we think of 'exotic' pets, ie. birds, reptiles, amphibians, bugs, etc: beginner - expert.
people see mammal pets as easier to care for. no experience needed. so you get debates like the pitbull one where it's 'just bad owners' vs 'theyre just violent dogs' instead of the truth which is somewhere in the middle. because not all dogs are the same *difficulty level.*
you would not recommend a Blue Beauty snake as a beginner. it's harder to care for and has a more volatile disposition. this doesn't mean no one should have one, it just means *experienced owners* should be the people that do.
same with cats, dogs, and small mammals. some small mammals are more prone to biting and escaping, and yet are recommend the same to children. some cats are more high maintenance (long hairs that require more hygiene upkeep, etc), and yet we recommend all cats the same.
and then there's dogs.
while *some* specific breeds (like those with dreadlocked coats) are recommend for experienced owners, most dogs are treated as the same level of experience: a beginner pet. when in reality, even the most *easy* dogs are not beginner pets. they still require the training and maintenance that many other pets (ie. many cats) do not. and that's not even bringing in temperament!!!
people are encouraged to go to a shelter and get any dog, even if they've never had a dog before. this is Dangerous. and stupid.
we need to reclassify pets, *all pets* as beginner to expert, whether or not they are mammals. and as for pitbulls?
pitbulls are not inherently evil, but not everyone should have one. they are an *advanced experience pet.* people should only own them if they have already had experience with dogs, and are prepared to deal with aggression and dangerous behavior.
the problem is people don't like to think of mammals, especially dogs, like this. they are 'man's best friend!'
this is completely ignoring the amount of effort our ancestors put into both a) breeding and domestication of them, and b) training of them for specific purposes so that they aren't dangerous.
so that's what I think. we need to, as a society, shift our perception of
- dogs as beginner pets (they aren't)
- dogs as all equally difficult (they aren't)
- mammals as easier than other pets (incorrect! my corn snake is the easiest pet to take care of that i own!! and less dangerous to me than my cats!)
- the idea that you should just go get a pet, specifically a dog, from the shelter and assume you can care for it just because it's a dog (and then not take into account any other factors, such as breed temperament!)

that comment about how you should not borrow grief from the future has saved me multiple times from spiraling into an inescapable state of anxiety. like every time i find myself thinking about how something in the future could go wrong i remember that comment and i think to myself: well i never know, it might get better. it might not even happen the way i think it will and if it does happen and it is sad and bad ill be sad about it then, when it happens. and it’s somehow soo freeing

You know what!? Nothing should be binary. Evil Good Right Wrong Woman Man??? Fuck You. Everything is a spectrum in a circle. Everything is a spectrum. Choosing between two extremes is utterly stupid. The End.

really love dynamics that are like 'it honestly doesn't matter if you view them as romantic or platonic, the point is that they love each other. the type of love is inconsequential, all that matters is that it's there'. gotta be one of my favorite genders.
