Irene was adjusted to the typical crowd that swarmed her whenever she returned from a meeting. If anything, she found it a little awkward when everyone was in her face all at once. Her husband was usually the one who answered these greetings, and she was growing adjusted to them day by day. However, she put on a smile and replied accordingly to each and every one of her servants. At the same time, her curious eyes searched for the face she was always most eager to come home to.

“Where’s Y/N?” The queen inquired, knowing that your attendance to her arrivals weren’t always mandatory because you were the head maid and had many duties to tend to.

Despite that, you’d always made an effort to see Irene whenever you could. Quickly wiping off some sweat with your handkerchief, you found yourself filing into the palace’s entrance after assisting cleanup in the dining hall. A bashful smile dotted your lips, hoping she wouldn’t take your tardy presence in the wrong way.

“You’ve returned! I’ve checked up on all the halls and the corridors are cleaned as well. You must be exhausted, Your Excellency. I have your bath ready for you,” You offered immediately, knowing the female took her baths in high esteem. After all, with a large, pristine tub and access to some of the finest soaps, why wouldn’t she cherish the relaxation that came along?

Irene flashed you a warm grin, one that brought unexplainable bliss in your heart for some reason. There was something about the way a pretty smile would stretch across her lips, a smile you were only bestowed with. Ever since the death of king Jaewon, you were surprised noticing that her duration of mourning was one shorter than you’d expect. You remembered ever so vividly that she was stoic, to say the least, at his funeral. After that, you were seeing Joohyun in a different light unlike no other, especially for a widow. A changed woman.

Little did you know, the robust swan that was Queen Irene had spread her lissome wings when the captor known as her husband could not keep the key to her cage any longer.
