I started working on this illustration of Atsushi Sakurai a couple days after his passing last year, but I fell into a rut and couldn’t find the strength to finish it until now 🥺 The award for most perfect person to study dynamic anatomy poses, stylized realism, and intricate clothing details would have to go to this beautiful soul. Gone far too soon—I hope Atsushi, Reita, and the rest of the incredible rockstars we’ve lost are all chatting up in the heavens about the music they loved to create 🙏🏻🩵

A. Vkei is a music subgenre, originating in Japan that combines elements of heavy metal, dark wave, and punk rock. It is characterized by its edgy and unique style, often incorporating elements of gothic fashion and makeup. Popular bands in the genre include Malice Mizer, Dir en grey, and Versailles.
Q. What bands do you recommend to people getting into vkei?
A. I recommend you introduce yourself to classic bands such as Malice Mizer, as well as some of the individual artists, like GACKT and Kaya. Personally, my favorite band is Dadaroma.
Q. What’s the appeal of Visual Kei?
A. Vkei has a dedicated and passionate fanbase, drawn to its unique and edgy aesthetic, catchy melodies, and deep lyrics. The subculture provides a sense of community and acceptance for those who feel out of place in the mainstream.
Q. Is vkei satanic?
A. The vkei subculture has roots in metal music and is often misunderstood by people unfamiliar with it. Some bands have dealt with controversial themes, including occult imagery and dark lyrics, but the subculture is not satanic.
