In April 1973, Ariana Afghan Airlines took delivery of this Boeing 720-030B YA-HBA. It would be flying for the airline for seven years and was sold to International Air Leases in March 1980.

Originally, this 720 was delivered new to Lufthansa as D-ABOM in June 1961. In January 1966, it became N785PA of PanAm and would continue to fly until it moved to Ariana. After its career in Afghanistan, this 720 was registered as N3746E by International Air Leases in March 1980, and in May 1980 to Bergin Aviation with the same registration.

In October 1980, it was delivered as HK-2558 to Aerotal, which retired it three years later in July 1983. It was then parked at Miami-International (FL), where it was scrapped between 1984 and 1985.

Mohammed Zahir Shah (15 October 1914 – 23 July 2007) was the last King (Shah) of Afghanistan, reigning for four decades, from 1933 until he was ousted by a coup in 1973. Following his return from exile, he was given the title 'Father of the Nation' in 2002, which he held until his death.
