More stories from hell (retail) today I was ringing up this lady and she goes oh I want to do part of this on a gift card and the rest on normal card and I go ok and then she hands me a folded piece of paper. I think oh OK it must be folded around the gift card, right? Wrong. It is a folded sheet of 8×11 printer paper with "$40" written on the inside in ballpoint pen. I go what is this. She says a gift card. I say this is not a gift card. She says yes it is. I say this is a piece of paper with "$40" written on it. She says "well it's a gift card." I say it absolutely is not. I am grinding my teeth. She says well I want to use it. I say you physically cannot do that bc it is a piece of paper. I cannot scan or swipe it. I apologize, as if this is my fault, and not because she is completely insane. I hate it here

btw if you're annoyed with Google search giving you results for stuff that's similar to but not actually what you typed in, go to search tools, go to where it says "all results" and change that to "verbatim" and then it will search for what you actually asked for
why this is not the default is beyond me other than obvs enshittification but it has rescued a bunch of searches for me lately where the top results were completely unhelpful until i switched to that so. might be helpful for others

Imagine an elf is given a job to do at a human institution. The humans think elves don’t need bathroom breaks, since they know they can hold it for days, but this elf has been traveling to reach their job, and has already been holding it to the point they are in pain. They ask for a break, but their job is important and time sensitive, so they admit they can still hold it when asked. After a full day of work, the elf tries to reach the bathroom in time, but they were never told where it is.
I am imagining it. I am holding their plight in my mind’s eye. The little Piss Elf, one among the wretched of the earth, has laid their body gladly on the altar of capital. In their delusion they think their suffering will elevate them, like a man who places his neck in the guillotine in the hope that for a brief moment his head will be at the top of the pile. Now, standing in the puddle of their folly, they see clearly that their toil has won them nothing. Enduring this exploitation has only prolonged it. In their mind they sew the flag of revolution from the soiled tatters of their little elf costume. Camus tells us one must imagine Sisyphus happy in the face of the absurdity of his suffering. I choose to imagine Piss Elf, furious.
