I think the turning point in his head was when Matt said, hey TPK - new beginnings.

But that wasn't the clever part. He is SO GOOD at taking the tools given to him for the intended purpose of kneecapping people's hearts.

His core?? We introduced that before the fucking Red Moon beam. That was WAY back before they even met Plane Rider Rin (I believe??) One of the engineers was like oh you got this dangerous thing inside you.

And the clever move was ***EVERYONE FUCKING FORGOT ABOUT IT*** including Matt. That's how you hit people where it hurts. Always have something in the tank to blindside people with. And he held this behind his teeth with every smile. He fucking knew about this last hail mary bomb trapped in his chest. And he never said a fucking word to remind everyone - to let anyone brace themselves for this decision

And when he saw half the party go down - Orym, Ashton, with only Imogen, Fearne, Laudna, and Chet on their last legs... He knew it was time. It was time. And he blindsided everyone beautifully including the DM

Because he was a little Killer Robot. That bomb didn't kill his intended target a millenia or so ago. And instead, it becomes the prayer through which he saves his family.

Who’s been shown time and time again to be FAST to anger? That Hazel?

Nico, who’s cannonically described by most characters as “scary and unnerving?” Nico, who, for a long time, is one of the angriest characters in the series? Who’s only sassy and sarcastic because it took him FOUR YEARS to mellow out? Who’s described as being one of the most powerful demigods, who a lot of people still consider the scariest? Who’s come into his own as a character from TTC to TSATS? That Nico?

Or Annabeth who’s, “cold and calculating. Doesn’t show emotion or express herself”

Annabeth, who’s the most expressive person in the series? Who cries in EVERY book in the OG series? Whether it be for Luke, or Thalia, or Percy, or Chiron, or a literal DOG? Who expresses passion like no other when it comes to architecture and her other interests? Who’s expressed compassion for people she didn’t know? People who at times posed a threat to her? Who isn’t afraid to be angry, or happy, or snide, or rude, or excited, or scared, or ecstatic? Who’s been unapologetically herself since the moment the series started? That’s who doesn’t show emotion? That’s Annabeth?

I like that The Chalice of the Gods is technically cozy fantasy. The Percy Jackson books (including Heroes of Olympus, and The Trials of Apollo) are filled with high stakes and violence. And yeah, there are definitely stakes in The Chalice of the Gods, and they’re high in their own way (but not apocalyptic high), but we see more cozy moments, like Percy doing homework, Percy and Annabeth and Grover hanging out after school, Percy and Annabeth helping Percy’s mom and step-dad make dinner. Another part of it being cozy fantasy is that it all takes place in Percy’s home of NYC. But with this cozy fantasy it gives us another way to view the high stakes we’ve seen, even for Percy. Everything seems so much more important, especially the little details of life, Percy’s own life is suddenly so much more important, and not because gods are giving him life or death stakes and asking him to save the world, but because he realizes how much he loves his life. He loves family dinners, he likes dates with Annabeth, he likes spending time with Grover, he even values the little gesture from his dad at the end. And it makes you actually want to be there with him this time. You want to sit down at Himbo Juice and try a Salty Sailor, you want to wander the farmer’s market, you want to see if maybe you could help Percy with his homework. It’s obviously written in the classic Percy Jackson style we all know and love, but this time with more focus on Percy’s personal life. I can’t wait for the next book.

matt ruling that the technical damage from the explosion was irrelevant due to the power and weight of fcg’s sacrifice is what really got me. even if sam rolled the max possible number on the dice, it wouldn’t have even brought otohan to below where she was before she took the health potion. mechanically speaking, she should have survived that blast by a LOT of hit points. but this was a player willingly killing their own character, beyond reviving and even potentially beyond resurrection, to give the rest of the party any advantage they could, and he rewarded that with the death of an antagonist that has haunted this campaign from the very beginning. unreal fucking plays by both matt and sam tonight.

When a TPK looked imminent, he told Matt it was okay. He knew they could move on, even from that. He was a calm and comforting presence at the table.

when Sam pulled the hail mary, he was the only one not yelling, crying, or both. He, in the moment, let his appreciation for the big move and the killer story beat shine through.

The probe has been sending gibberish science data back to Earth, and scientists feared it was just the probe finally dying. You know, after working for 50 GODDAMN YEARS and LEAVING THE GODDAMN SOLAR SYSTEM and STILL CHURNING OUT GODDAMN DATA.

So they analyzed the gibberish and realized that in it was a total readout of EVERYTHING ON THE PROBE. Data, the programming, hardware specs and status, everything. They realized that one of the chips was malfunctioning.

So what do you do when your probe is 22 Billion km away and needs a fix? Why, you just REPROGRAM THAT ENTIRE GODDAMN THING. Told it to avoid the bad chip, store the data elsewhere.

Sent the new code on April 18th. Got a response on April 20th - yeah, it's so far away that it took that long just to transmit.

And the probe is working again.

From a programmer's perspective, that may be the most fucking impressive thing I have ever heard.
