A videogame is rendered unwinnable when it allows a player to make a mistake that can not be corrected. The result is a game that can not be won. Worse, the text adventures and graphic adventures that such a situation arose in rarely bothered to notify the player that they would never succeed in their quest, leaving them to trudge around the game world forever like the walking dead.

For the WeLoveFine Uncharted Collection t-shirt design competition, I decided to make a design that incorporated elements from all three games. The most obvious one is the Tibetan dagger from Uncharted 2 which fit really well into a compass design. I included Sir Francis Drake’s motto “Sic Parvis Magna” meaning “Greatness From Small Beginnings” which is inscribed into a ring that Nathan Drake wears around his neck in every uncharted game. The inside of the ring reads ‘29 Januarie 1596 9-32-79′ which is the date the ring was made and the coordinates of Francis Drake’s empty coffin that Nathan finds at the start of Uncharted 1. In the background, I put a map of Arabia which was the main location in Uncharted 3 which had Nathan Drake looking for the legendary lost city the Iram of the Pillars.

3D print designer Mike Barretta built this amazing BMO emulator using an assortment of 3D printed pieces and Super Nintendo buttons, as well as a mixture of electronic equipment. To see this emulator in action, check out the play test of Donkey Kong Country.

While I’ve released many games in my regular job, this is was my first experience working alone on every aspect of a complete game, and taking it from concept all the way to market.

Besides the fact that Irene Gallo being one of the best ADs, I am always excited to work onTor.com short story art there’s no way to tell what kind of subject matter will come along.
This piece accompanies Isabel Yep’s novelette A cup of Salt Tears - an eerie yet beautiful story. You can read it here. The audiobook of IQ84 by Murakami Haruki accompanied the working of this piece, it was quite the perfect track.
“Makino’s mother taught her caution, showed her how to carve her name into cucumbers, and insisted that she never let a kappa touch her. But when she grows up and her husband Tetsuya falls deathly ill, a kappa that claims to know her comes calling with a barbed promise. “A Cup of Salt Tears” is a dark fantasy leaning towards horror that asks how much someone should sacrifice for the one she loves.”
While I was doing research for this project, I learnt a lot of interesting facts about Kappa (河童 ”river-child”), including their obsession with shirikodama (尻子玉 "Small Anal Ball"). It’s believed that kappa lure their victims into the water and gain power by taking their shirikodama, a mythical ball said to contain their soul which is located inside the anus. Check out the amazing manga by Hokusai titled 同河童を釣るの法 (“How to fish for Kappa”).

It’ll fight if it has to, but it’s vulnerable out in the open. If it takes us over, then it has no more enemies, nobody left to kill it. And then it’s won.
