heartbreak high school subject headcanons
(from your friendly neighbourhood gay sydney born and raised ibis lover)
[*mentioned or implied in canon; e.g. missy in season 1 is shown revising something to do with indigenous perspectives on country which suggests she's taking aboriginal studies, darren skips drama to hang out with ca$h who skips design and technology, ca$h is also doing chemistry]
these are based on school subjects most nsw public schools tend to offer in year 11 and 12. everyone has to do english and iirc maths is also being made compulsory (but most schools require students to take it regardless of whether it's compulsory or not for timetabling reasons).

I would like to say that oh my god it’s lowkey so refreshing to see someone that isn’t like ‘oh em gee I love spider <3333 he’s so good he’s trying so much redemption <3333 even if not I love’ (I sound like I’m mocking which sorry but like that’s how it comes out to me) . I get he’s trying to be better and also his mum, but he’s not a good person??? So haha thanks for seeing that lol
yeah ... i have some thoughts on him but i'm also trying to not piss people off ... if you like spider maybe don't read this because i'm gonna say some not so nice things about him.
honestly spider was my least favourite when i first watched season 1 even before i saw all the hype and fanfics about him on tumblr and ao3. part of it is honestly he's just not my type in terms of character; i just naturally align with complex female characters and it's probably not gonna change any time soon (*gregory eddie voice* "i was born that way").
that being said, the uwu soft boy treatment kind of made me dislike spider more. the fact that he's been getting it is disappointing but sadly not surprising.
(it's s*bastian sm*the all over again)
heartbreak high a genuinely great show with an exciting south asian female lead who has a lot of charisma, and a diverse supporting cast, and yet the most written about character on ao3 is an andrew t6te wannabe who just isn't very interesting or exciting as a character. i also think there's a tendency in fandom to treat male characters like wounded puppies if they're thin, white and conventionally attractive enough, while never giving the same grace to female characters with a fraction of the flaws.
(aka why i refuse to go into the glee reddit even though there are a couple people in there that have shouted out my fanfiction)
i also ... don't think he's all that hot? obviously i get that as a lesbian my opinion on whether a guy is attractive or not but like ... if bad boy with a heart of gold is your type, douglas piggott is literally right there. he takes care of his nan, he has a pet duck and he doesn't lie about having sex with quinn gallagher jones and make rude comments about her genitalia or call her ableist slurs.
not to mention the spider/amerie truthers read wayyyyyy more into the ship than the writers ever intended for them (like there was no chance of that ship ever being a thing on the show aside from an unrequited crush and an embarrassing, unfulfilling hookup that was only ever meant to be a one-time thing) but i have too many words and not enough time. ayesha madon telling the spider/amerie shippers to go to therapy was honestly so validating. the other fandom i'm in has some shippers who over the 15+ years that fandom has existed have done some genuinely unhinged shit (like harass people's irl partners and attacking cast members they claimed to be fans of) and i wonder how it would have been received (particularly so early in the show's run) if any of them had said something similar.
that being said i don't *hate* him or think he's an irredeemably shit person, i just like the other characters better and don't like that missy's storyline revolved around him.

“Well, if you’re not going to learn Na’vi, and if you’re not going to get Brittany to tutor you in math, what else are you going to do?” Sam asked.
“I don’t know,” Santana replied, shrugging as she threw a particularly large trash bag into the dumpster. “I mean, we can’t really go anywhere without seeing people we know, and the only people who know about us are you and Quinn.”
“Oh, so you’re, like, a thing now?”
“Anyone ever tell you that you gossip more than my Tia Rosamaria and Kurt Hummel combined?” Santana asked.
“Okay, okay, so you can’t be seen in public with her because you’re paranoid. What other romantic gesture could you do?” Sam asked. “Besides steal all her clothes, which I think you’ve probably already done.”
Santana looked down at the sweater she was wearing over her work uniform, which had once been Brittany’s and had a large patch with a cartoon dinosaur on it. “What do you mean?”
Sam laughed. “So that’s your sweater then?”
“Well, no, it’s Brittany’s,” Santana said, blushing. She rolled her eyes as Sam raised an eyebrow at her and added, “I was staying at her house and got cold, so she gave it to me to wear and I just never got around to giving it back to her.” She saw Sam start to snort with laughter and shoved him. “Shut up! It’s warm.”
“Yeah, it’s warm today. Why are you even wearing it? You’re going to get heatstroke or something.”
“That’s not even a real thing.” Santana said.
“It is, and you’ll be singing a different tune when you get it…” Sam started, before Irene appeared, seemingly out of nowhere, and cleared her throat to interrupt their conversation.
“There was, um,” Santana started, frantically looking at Sam for help as Irene looked at her with a raised eyebrow, pursed lips and a hand on her hip. She cleared her throat and said, “There was a dumpster emergency.”
“Oh yeah,” Sam lied. “Um, she needed me to get rid of this huge rat. You really should have seen it.”
“Right,” Irene said. She shook her head in frustration and, as she walked off, muttered, “I hope the new hires are less slack than you, Blondie.”
“Wait, new hires?” Santana asked anxiously. The very real possibility of Sam being replaced by weird new people [i did not notice this unfinished sentence until now so adding finishing it to my to-do list]
“Yeah, one of them’s starting on Saturday,” Irene said, shrugging. “It’s too bad you’ve got a dentist appointment, though. I was kind of hoping you’d be around to train them.”
What dentist appointment? Santana thought. I don’t have a dentist appointment. Saturday, why does that sound so familiar…
“I could do it,” Sam piped up. “I’ll still be around for a couple more days by then.”
Irene smirked. “You’re a good man, Blondie.”
As the telephone rang, Irene went to answer it, and Sam went to go and deal with a customer. Meanwhile, Santana was still stuck on what she was supposed to be doing on Saturday. It felt important, but she couldn’t for the life of her remember why. It was nobody’s birthday, there were no family weddings to stress out about, no one had died recently, Sam wasn’t due to leave until after then, she didn’t actually have to go to the dentist and her dentist didn’t work on Saturdays anyway. For the remainder of her shift, she couldn’t stop thinking about it, stuck on that one detail for hours, until it was finally time to clock off. The weather had grown significantly warmer and she figured it was probably best to take off her sweater. She pulled it off and stared at it for a moment, her eyes making brief contact with the dinosaur on the patch before everything came flooding back.
Brittany. Columbus Pride.
Crap, she thought.
