Surprisingly did manage to get some sleep with the most bizarre nightmares and background noises, so I'm a little bit rested. Only had one shelter run during the night, though the explosions were quite terrifying.

Are you and your family still okay?

Uh... yeah, just very tense. Looks like Iran really decided to join in on the fun; there are dozens of explosive drones and missiles taking their sweet time heading our way.

It's gonna take them at least two hours to reach us, so I'm using my time to prepare for frequent shelter runs (water, food, clothes, pacifier and diapers for my 2yo for starters- any ideas what else I can put in a backpack?). Either way, doesn't look like I'll be sleeping much tonight; if I do get some sleep, it'll definitely be in a set of clothes I can run/ carry Tiny in.

I'll update tomorrow or whenever I can if it's safe for me to do so

six months ago, never in my worst imaginings would I have thought of what we saw happening, not only the horror of the massacre itself, the real time images of a pogrom, but the aftermath, in people justifying and jubilating over it, in people we thought we knew, loved, trusted, engaging in dehumanizing hatred, denying rape, calling torture and murder resistance and freedom fighting, ripping down hostage posters, attacking synagogues, spray painting swastikas on Jewish homes and businesses, calling for Jewish death on college campuses and the streets of New York, LA, London, Paris, Sydney (and on and on globally), carrying signs to cleanse us from the world, cheering on oppressive terrorist organizations, valorizing suicide, spreading disinformation, claiming the Magen David is a hate symbol and the shema is a white supremacist chant, distorting history, gaslighting us, making us feel unsafe, less than, unwelcome, and retraumatizing us again and again by refusing to offer compassion while we mourned our dead and grieved our assaulted, injured, and kidnapped. I never imagined that saying we believe in the sanctity of life, and that we ache for all people impacted and senselessly lost in this, that we believe in human rights and self-determination, and that civilians never deserve to die no matter where they're from, and that people should be able to live in peace and freedom, would get us branded as genocidal maniacs. never did I imagine how many of us would lose friends and community and safe spaces solely for existing while Jewish.

I also never would've imagined becoming closer to our community on here and feeling the pride, connection, and depth of love we have for each other, through any differences, uniting us not just now, but through the ages, to our loved ones past, to our ancestors, to all the souls whose absences left echoes in the fabric of our world and our histories, so many lost just for being Jews, who are irrevocably part of us, whose flames we carry as we never forget. they were taken from us, but they were here. they existed. and so the miracle is we exist too. even in times as hard as these. we continue to shine light in this world. it's been an honor to read your words, thoughts, feelings, even in shared anger, fear, and pain.

there has been too much violence, suffering, and tragedy. I want the war to end. I want the hostages returned home immediately. I want the status quo to change because it cannot continue like this. I want more equitable governance and true safety. I want coexistence. I want kindness. I have no way of making any of this happen and am far away from the region, so none of that is in my power. it's really not in any of ours, as usual through history, these decisions are left to questionable and often unfortunately corrupt authorities who aren't prioritizing the people. I wish it weren't so. thus we do what we always do. for the living and the dead, we bear witness. we seek understanding and ways to repair the world. we hope for new slivers of joy.

I love autumn, crisp leaves and pumpkins and cider and ghosts. I often light-heartedly joked that I wished October could last longer. but these past six months...sometimes I feel like they've aged me sixty years, knowing I've changed irrevocably, knowing it all changed my world, my foundation, my trust, my perception of people, my approach to so many things that I never had to question before. knowing I can't go back and will never be the same. it also feels like no time has passed at all. it is still October. October 190th. I don't know when time will ever feel normal again. I don't know when the world will ever feel soft again.

still. we survive. there has to be hope in it somewhere. am yisrael chai.
