Our Love by Caribou
I love this album. I have nothing more to say.
Not to steal Dan Snaith's thunder at this proud moment but I'd also like to take this opportunity to note that I would like to have included an Aphex Twin track in this list but I just couldn't be arsed typing out the track title. I'd be here until April (it's ZZzzsj788ruxxxTJ22SGurunk or something). But yes, Syro was really great and I'm not just saying that to be all muso and 'chin strokey'.

Time by Jungle
Baggy falsetto from the notoriously shy West Londoners. It's about time.
Somebody told me they originally wanted to play their live shows in total darkness. Not sure if it's true. Shame if not. It's a good story. Good video too.

Out Of Step by Elizabeth Rose
Hmmm? This should've been huge. The world stinks. Maybe it'll get reissued in 2015 and we can all say "well, I liked it in 2014"
It's like electroclash on a come down. This is nothing less than a brilliant thing.
You can download it here.

Wait (Kygo Remix) by M83
Yes More Kygo. Anthony Gonzalez' voice sounds particularly dreamy on this. My tummy feels funny.
Yes I know Wait is an old song but this remix is from 2014 so I say it's allowed. END OF.
You can download it for nada here.

We Don't Eat (Glastrophobie Remix) by James Vincent McMorrow
Excuse the video. This song deserves more than a picture of a pretty woman wearing some nice knitwear looking seductively into the distance.
On the plus side, I think it has some link to free download. Every cloud and all that....

Shake It Off by Taylor Swift
All other pop music go home. We don't need you anymore. Nothing to see here. Move on.

Shine (Kygo Remix) by Benjamin Francis Leftwich
Benjamin Left Franc...Benjamin Francis Left? Benjamin Francis Sandwich? Benjamin Leftis Franwich? No. I'm still struggling.
I don't think music ever sounded so "summery"

Istanbul by Morrissey
World Peace Is None Of Your Business is not masterpiece Moz would make you believe but Istanbul is fantastic and it is a refreshing break from the recent plodding rock he's been spewing for the last three albums. I'm only harsh because I care. I REALLY care. Morrissey remains at his best on songs with an air menace about them (see Speedway, Ganglord, Southpaw, Life Is A Pigsty) so there.
Let's be thankful that he's still alive.

The Swan by Cheatahs
Possibly the loudest song I heard all year. Seriously. I don't know who mixed this but they must have tinnitus and they gave it to me after I listened to it on headphones for the first time.

The Light by SBTRKT feat. Denai Moore
A teeny weeny bit underwhelmed by the new SBTRKT this year. Not this song though.

Bike Rider by Mungo's HiFi feat. Pupajim
Probably my favourite pro bicycle song of the year. Mungo REALLY loves bikes and not just because it means the Old Bill leave him alone. Particularly refreshing outlook given that news cyclists being killed or injured on London roads has been all too frequent. Stay safe London cyclists.

Yesterday by Swim Mountain
This stood out to me on the radio one day. Yes it was 6 Music. How did you guess? Then I listened to it loads towards the arse end of the year.

The History Of A Cheating Heart by Damon Albarn
Robbed of the Mercury prize. He was never going to win it though. Not urban enough. If you aren't vegan poetry, they aren't interested anymore. Lovely album. Made me feel all warm and fuzzy.

Text
"Where is the Tubestrike Best Songs of 2014 countdown? How do I know what the best songs were this year without THE annual definitive documentation?" said exactly one person to me this yuletide.
Has it ruined your Christmas? Sorry.
To be blunt, I struggled to compile a list of 20 songs worthy of inclusion in such a hallowed hall of fame. I don't know if this is:
a) Because music was a bit crud this year (statistically unlikely)
b) Because I didn't find the good stuff (probable)
c) Maybe I'm growing out of the whole concept of ranking music (I think so)
d) I've spent most of 2014 archiving my CD collection which has resulted in me listening to little more than CD singles from the late 90's (definitely)
Probably all of the above.
Instead of the usual advent countdown culminating in a Christmas Eve publication of the song that defined my listening taste that year, I thought I'd crudely just post some songs that rocked my 2014. A New Year Eve splurge of my favourite songs this year in no particular order.
I wish my 86 followers a healthy and happy 2015. Might even make it to 100 by 2016. Here goes...
