cw. cigarettes, sad toji, hurt/comfort but toji's the one being comforted, au where toji lives but megumi is still under gojo's care
a/n. had this thought and i had to get it out
“I thought you quit smoking.”
Toji doesn’t turn toward you and instead listens to the sound of your slippers hitting the hard metal of the balcony floor as you walk up to him.
He exhales a puff of smoke slowly out into the breezy night air before answering.
“I did. This is just--”
He pauses, taking time to think about how to express what he’s feeling.
“A moment of weakness,” he finishes, finally turning to you.
You hum in understanding as you look out at the cityscape before you and reach your hand out to Toji wordlessly.
Toji sighs, resigning himself to the fact that he’s been caught and places his cigarette between your two fingers.
Instead of putting it out though, you take a long drag and watch the smoke rise above you as you exhale.
Toji wants to reach out and snatch the cigarette back. He wants to tell you that you shouldn’t be smoking that shit but it’s like he’s stuck in a trance. Watching your lips round perfectly as you let the smoke escape and momentarily cloud the night sky.
He says nothing and watches you hand him back the cigarette.
“What’s on your mind?”
Silence.
What’s on his mind? Everything. So much that it’s hard to really tell what’s there.
“You’ve been tossing and turning all night. And now you’re out here,” you offer.
His voice comes after a few moments. It’s quiet. Probably the quietest you’ve ever heard him speak.
“It’s him.”
He turns slowly to look at you and you notice how tired he looks. His handsome features appear worn, replaced by dullness and exhaustion.
“Sometimes I think about the person he’s becoming.”
You realize he's talking about his son and you let him continue.
“He’s strong and smart...and kind.” A proud, but still sad smile tugs at the corners of his mouth.
"He has people he loves and people that love him in return." You notice that his eyes have turned glossy as he speaks about Megumi.
“I don’t feel like I made the wrong choice.” He pauses again as if still contemplating the decision.
"He’s living a better life than I could have ever provided him with but still--.” He pauses again, looking out at the city, and when he continues his voice comes out as a whisper.
“Sometimes I wish I could’ve done more.”
Although his words are quiet, they carry a lot of weight. Heavy and dense, they leave his mouth and cloud the atmosphere like the smoke from the cigarette you’re sharing.
You fight your instinct to reach out to him and comfort him, knowing that you should give him some time to process things on his own.
It's only when Toji turns to you that you reach for his hand and run your thumb over his knuckles reassuringly.
“You did what you could, Toji.” He knows you mean it genuinely by the fondness in your expression.
“It takes strength to really look at ourselves. At our shortcomings. All we can do is keep trying to do better.”
Toji lets your words sink into his cloudy mind. He brings your hand to his lips for a kiss, earning him another fond smile.
He pulls you to him and wraps an arm around you. Your arms circle his waist and you bury your face in his chest in a side embrace. A small smile tugs at the corners of his mouth as the two of you fall into comfortable silence while looking out into the night sky.

Fanfiction writers (Scriptor fictus) are intelligent animals who need plenty of enrichment as well as encouragement! If they're stuck in poor conditions (e.g. have studies, work, have to actually write to have something written) then they require the proper enrichment to engage in more healthy behaviours, like writing. Remember, due to poor breeding and socialisation, over half of all fanfic writers suffer from low self confidence and executive dysfunction so take care of them!
Give your fanfic writers proper care. Fanfiction writers are a life long commitment.
