Unmasked Genji ADHD fueled rambling so prepare for random ideas not really organized
I've seen quite a lot of stuff trying to figure out what Genji looks like without his mask on and what Hanzo actually did to him.
My personal opinion is what we see in the dragon cinematic isn't just what Hanzo did to his face because in the black watch skin and comics etc his face is like untouched. It appears like Hanzo during his attacks went for his torso and neck primarily, cutting his arm probably really deeply about mid bicep to the point it would have to be amputated due to blood loss, and losing his legs as well to blood loss, and considering Genji has stuff on the front and back of his neck my guess is that Hanzo tried to make it as quick as possible and full on stabbed Genji through the neck not decapitating him but like that should have killed him. It would also explain why he's got a robotic voice because if he was stabbed through the neck it probably damaged his vocal cords and he's got what appears to me a cybernetic spine at least on his neck so that was probably also damaged during that.
And apart from just other assorted scarring from light cuts and other smaller injuries from Hanzo's attack, he's a trained assassin who is trained to kill as quick as possible, so their fight probably didn't last that long considering we can assume Genji was unarmed (both in the way of he didn't have a weapon and he lost the arm). And he would have no reason to go for genji's face during an attack like that.
Like legitimately the biggest injuries that I think Hanzo did take Angie was a slash across his chest which cut deep enough to injure his arm very badly but not deep enough to actually reach his heart or anything, and then damage to his neck. With the rest being more surface level scrapes which could have been patched up with stitches which would leave scarring pretty badly but nothing insane.
But since we know his face is decently burned and scarred by the time the dragon cinematic happens my theory is that either during one of the last black watch missions if there was one after the mission during retribution. Or what I mainly think happened, when the Swiss base exploded, Genji could have been in that building when the thing exploded which would explain the burning and scarring on his face and presumably other parts of his body. And if Cassidy was still in OverWatch at that point that could explain how he lost his arm because I'm pretty sure it's confirmed Bob did not rip his arm off. Because we know the explosion "killed" Gabriel Reyes and Jack Morrison, and it would make sense why after the explosion where genji's remaining body got damaged even more so he couldn't deal with everything going on in his head associated with his body that he would leave to try and come to terms with his body or find peace in some way.
And if the injuries happened in black watch before the explosion, I could explain why he got the new armor for the storm rising missions when he was transferred to the main OverWatch team. They had to fix more stuff and realized it wasn't safe for him to have any fleshy human parts still exposed so they made him a new safer suit.
That's just my thoughts anyways in a very rambly fashion.
Also I am surprised that in the future they don't have something that can reduce scarring, and if they do have that thing even though now genji's come to terms with his body I wouldn't be surprised if he did go through with the reducing scarring thing primarily on his face or anywhere of high mobility because (correct me if I'm wrong) areas that are highly scarred are often a lot tighter, so not even aesthetically would it be a better option but for quality of life even just minorly reducing the scarring might just make things a little less painful. Also along the same lines probably have something to help hair growth considering stuff we have now for that which isn't much but there is something and considering how advanced science is in the universe it would not surprise me in the slightest if they had those things.
Also also Genji showing Hanzo his face partially where it's so scarred and burned and everything was slightly a jerk move because Hanzo didn't cause the burning on his face, so showing that without explaining at least a little bit that "oh don't worry you didn't do this" is a little mean but I'm pretty sure Hanzo would remember not burning his face so at the same time it isn't.
Anyways that concludes my rambling for the minute, if anyone reads this thank you for enduring my chaotic train of thought.

Here's the first panel to the starwatch au comic I'm making as a preview! I may or may not have just handed this in as a final school art assignment aswell XD
I'm quite proud of this NGL, mainly cuz of the green cast on his face from the sun light passing through the visor.

this is actually because Genji's voice actor, Gaku Space, is fluent in Japanese and was born and raised there. Hanzo's voice actor, Paul Nakauchi, was born and raised in LA and as far as I know isn't fluent.
I'm not sure if anyone was looking for the LITERAL answer to this, but I always found it interesting and had fun theorizing with it and headcanoning about it. Maybe Hanzo dropped Japanese to keep himself further from the family, or he believed English to be more useful and perfected the language more than his Japanese.
I find it really interesting that Genji has a bunch of voice lines in Japanese but Hanzo doesn't
I actually had to check this and holy shit your right-
Hanzo from what it looks like on the fandom wiki only has one voiceline in Japanese and that's his ultimate voiceline. Two if you count his "Sake!" voiceline.
Meanwhile Genji has around 35 voicelines in Japanese and that's only counting non-purchasable voicelines that just happen in game!
My guess as to why this is lore wise is because of how different Hanzo and Genji were treated when they were kids. Genji was able to do whatever he wanted and socialise with people outside of the Shimada clan, meanwhile Hanzo didn't get that freedom. My guess is that after Hanzo "killed" Genji and ran away he refrained from using his first language because it brang back too many bad memories. Since he wasn't really allowed to socialise his only good memories where he would be speaking Japanese would be with Genji and Kiriko.

Some may say that genji being able to summon a dragon with his sword is the most insane and unbelievable part of his kit, but in actuality his entire kit is bloody insane!
(this video is 6 years old btw so just a heads up!)
youtube
Like he says in the video, Genji can move at the speed of a F1 racing car, stop for moving that quickly almost immediately, deflect an entire team of bastions in turret form, and not just stop the bullets but the fact he's deflecting them means he's not only meeting the bullets at the forced air traveling with but hitting them with double that force as to send them back with the same force, and he's deflecting with his human arm (which is something that isn't mentioned in the video but just makes it even more insane).
The fact he can summon a dragon, is just insane and unheard of, but even if he isn't actually summoning a dragon and it is some sort of hard light thing, he's still doing everything else on top of being able to do all of that while wielding an ōdachi (which at its length of around five and a half feet, ways approximately just shy of 5 lbs or 2.2 kg, as compared to the roughly 1-2ft long wakizashi weighing in at roughly 1 lbs)
And technically speaking, can't just deflect 6/5 (depending if we're talking about OverWatch 1 or OverWatch 2) bastions, but he can deflect 10. If you would have, in OverWatch 1, a team consisting of five bastions and one Genji each, both of those genjis would be deflecting the rounds of the 10 bastions!!!
And this is just the stuff he's capable of in game which is nothing compared to what he's capable of in lore, which makes it even more insane!!! Who knows what he's fully capable of in lore at this point, because if this is the way they have to have him so that he's balanced and adjust in a good enough state to play in game, just imagine what he would be capable of in the actual story. And it's not like these are things you can only do in game because we see him do this stuff in cinematics, we see him dash, deflect, and do seemingly impossible things without even breaking a sweat. Like his dash having a range of 15 m in game, who knows if he has that limitation in "the real world", maybe he can go as far as he would like at those speeds, with the only limitation being it would be really exhausting to move that fast all the time so he only uses it sparingly.
I just love examining small details of OverWatch, it's characters ,and its story. And if it isn't obvious I especially love when things are broken down mathematically and just put into perspective, like there's another video by this guy explaining how when Reinhardt hammers down, the sound would be so loud it would be deafening to say the very least.
Additionally this video just provided further evidence that Genji needs a baseball skin, so he can match zenyatta. That and also the fact his voice actor used to be a professional baseball player so it would be a kind of cool nod to that, and baseball is the biggest sport in Japan.
if you think about it he would be genuinely so good at playing baseball, keep the incredible at batting being able to hit the ball at such speeds that just for him to stop a bullet he's already moving so many times faster than some of the best batters in the world, but he would also be an incredible pitcher, and also when he's running to the bases you would barely be able to make him out he's going so fast. He would have to limit himself so hard to play with people at least a little fairly XD

Not a finished drawing, but here is a wip I'm working on!
Advice welcomed! Please tell me your thoughts so far!
I realized I haven't been as happy with my art recently, and I think it's because since I wasn't really able to draw during the last school year I felt quite rusty at it, and because of that trying to get back into drawing I felt like everything I made was really stiff. And especially the way I was trying to draw with semi-realistic proportions it just didn't feel right. So I'm slowly starting to work on getting a bit more loose with my art and on top of that I'm slowly getting confidence in drawing Genji XD
I've seen a lot of people do it but I genuinely just love when genji's got black hair with green tips because he just hasn't dyed it in a while lol

Reminder that associating hair length with gender is not a culturally universal concept and that many indigenous folks in North America don’t cut their hair for cultural reasons that have nothing to do with gender.
Reminder that a native guy should be allowed to wear his hair in long braids without people calling it gender nonconformity or saying he’s breaking gender norms, because hair length has nothing to do with his gender norms.
Reminder that a queer native woman should be allowed to wear her hair long without being automatically read as femme presenting, that she can be butch with long hair, because long hair is not associated with femininity in her culture.
Reminder that many native folks cut their hair for solemn reasons, usually mourning, and remarking on it as a reflection of personal style or gender presentation can be deeply disrespectful. No, she didn’t just get a fierce butch haircut - she cut her hair because someone died. No, he didn’t cave to a gender conforming haircut - he cut his hair because someone died.
Reminder that this is not universally practiced by native folks and, like all cultural practices, some people are more strict in their adherence than others.
