his words feel like a mirror to her own, like he'd peered into her heart to say them out loud—— she knows better, though. he smiles like he's a hero as he says them, tired and trying and still fighting for the better—— he understands, too. ruby gazes at him with her silver eyes, feeling like she's just as tired as he is. ❝ but why should it be us? ❞ she says, before she can stop herself, and flinches back—— retracts in—— she can't take it back and it stings like betrayal, her body repulsed by her own words. why does it matter, if you get to be the hero? why does it matter, if you're doing good in the end? why does it matter, if you were the only one that could? ruby shuts her eyes tight as she hunches inwards, wishing she were anywhere, anyone else. ❝ why do i have to be the one constantly keeping everyone together? ❞
i don't get the choice. i don't get the choice. was the option of stepping away even an achievable possibility for any of them? when have any of them been given the choice to be anything other than a hero / a soldier / a martyr / another pawn in a centuries old game designed by asinine fools? destiny is all but branded where the metal of the weapon meets innocent flesh, an oath signed in blood and sacrifice. not even death could offer respite, nothing more than a pause before the culling game began once more. ❛ of course you can’t back down. ❜ it’s because he understood so well, that sora could answer with a smile ( of sadness? of acceptance? did it have to be anything more than just a simple smile? ) ❛ not when everyone’s depending on you. not after everything that’s been lost. if you back down now, then what was it all for? ❜

yang realizes her eyes are trained on summer without truly seeing her. ( for a moment, she's scared the woman will fizzle out of her vision, leaving her—— alone in the clearing. she's already so tired of being haunted by her mothers, she thinks she's relieved this one is real. ) she exhales, a fragile sound, shaking her head as she tries to think of something, anything to say. ❝ a long story? ❞ she's grown up on that phrase, this is nothing new. ❝ more like ten years overdue. you're—— ❞
she tries to bite down on the surge of pain and anger. ❝ mom ... summer. ❞ that name sounds foreign, foreign, on her tongue. but what does she call her, now? summer was always mom, in ways that yang's real mom never could be, but mom died years ago; she doesn't get to come back like this. yang feels herself tear up and leashes that even tighter—— holds onto it tight with the frustration in her gut—— bites her lip hard enough to bleed because—— SHE DOESN'T GET TO COME BACK LIKE THIS.

❝ you were alive this whole time, and yet you—— you were—— do you know how hard it's been? for us? for me? ❞
Can’t be. Shouldn’t. Is. She didn’t mean for this to happen—not this way, not tonight—but the flash of golden hair she’d seen in the window a moment ago rooted her to the ground between the trees. (Summer Rose is many things: turncoat, liar, insurgent. Cold-hearted enough to vanish before her daughter came hurtling outside, she isn’t.)
Her own fault for getting too close. “I am,” she says, hardly louder than a whisper. Thirteen years, it’s been. Yang is taller than her now, wall-eyed and trembling like she’s… well. She is seeing a ghost. The words hi, Yang tangle up in Summer’s mouth, inane, inadequate; but she’s not sure what else to say. “I…”
From Yang’s shock-pale face, her gaze flickers down to the absence where an arm should be, and her own hands roll into fists, nails in her palms. Summer shuts her eyes, exhales, looks up again; torn-open wounds and an agony of confusion stare back at her. The explanation, she knows, will hurt far more than it heals. “It’s,” she says, strained, “a long… story.”

he pulls them in immediately, squeezing their hand as that smug grin of his widens—— of course, he hadn't expected anything else, but he won't let them slip away now. so mercury laughs at their request, louder than he expected, but it's not like it matters in the middle of a party. ❝ it's not like i'd let you, ❞ he says back, ❝ so no complaints on my part. just don't step on my toes and i won't step on yours. alright? ❞ and they both know that won't be a pleasant experience at all.
further protest builds in their throat, but it dies away quickly. they have the urge to wipe that smug look off his face, but they doubt they'll put up much of a fight in this awkward dress. “ okay, okay. if something goes wrong, i warned you. ” as they raise their hand to meet his, one final moment of hesitation gives them pause—should they take this step? (what would their father think?) but they steel themself and rest their hand, gently, in his. “ you have to lead. as the taller one. ”

also re:pyrrha and her death this is so autistic of me but i enjoy the way she haunts the narrative, haunts each character's every choice, in the same way adam haunts the narrative in the saw movies. her death propels the plot, yes, but it also provides strength to (and, generally, shows vulnerability in) the characters. ruby unlocks her silver eyes because of pyrrha, and uses her death (and summer's) to stand firm on her choices. jaune is shown affected by pyrrha most, and honestly, for good reason. she was his friend and teammate and realizing that she loved him the whole time and in a sense also died for him is hard. very hard! from her death onwards, he is always thinking about her. and it's not just her- nora and ren lost her too, after all. she was their friend too, she was loved by them too. it's even more personal for ren, however, because he's lost everything before. losing pyrrha is a stinging reminder of that but also another new wave of grief. he's lost his family but the universe didn't stop there; it took pyrrha from him too. who else is next? this is something that i think nora is also keenly aware of- it's why she's constantly trying to bring him to the present.
#death /#i have a lot of thoughts on who was affected by pyrrha and how. like i havent touched on weiss but trust i have Thoughts#she looked up to pyrrha; regarded her as one of beacon's strongest; she was friends with her too. losing pyrrha is a complete shock to her#which doesn't help with the fact that her father dragged her back to the schnee manor as well. it amplifies her grief/depression#blake probably feels partly at fault just because of the white fang's involvement.#yang wonders if she could have done anything different. if she didnt attack mercury maybe she wouldn't have been too late to fight with her#there's just. a lot. and i think a lot about it. shes so integral to the narrative the same way adam is in saw#he haunts those movies fr. pyrrha does the same in rwby#out.

general headcanons and canon divergencies for my little guys! this will up updated over time as i solidify my years-old thoughts and headcanons, and will be linked on my muselist page.
starting off with none of my guys are cishet. most of them are nonbinary, some are trans, and their sexuality ranges! eventually i will note this on my muselist page itself. currently, their pronouns are whatever the show has given them, but i will make an announcement when this changes!
i am still unsure as to where exactly i will take ruby— i am fond of flown north, and it is part of my main canon on this blog (hi aesop and cole), but i am not sure if that's where i want to take my ruby at this moment. as a whole, my ruby is still taiyang and summer's daughter, but i can easily adapt this for my writing partner's canon. in short: i'm going with the flow! <- as a whole this note applies to when i eventually add qrow.
zwei (yes, zwei headcanon) is an emotional support animal for the rose-xiao long-branwen household and their guests. i'm still thinking (and frankly researching) on whether to make him a psychiatric service dog or not.
i do have aus planned for roman and pyrrha where they live— roman's is easy, pyrrha's not so much. i will detail a full post for this later, but roman's tldr is that he survived somehow and has been on the run since. whereabouts unknown, but probably slinking off to mistral's underbelly.
as a whole, there are parts about the white fang that i think need to be critically examined and will be rewritten on my blog, especially in regards to the very flat "peaceful protests=good, violent protests=bad" angle that rooster teeth is going with. to be clear: i am a person of color living in the u.s. (i'm south korean) and do face racism from a variety of angles, and i am also very interested in the history of and actively participate in social activism. i am not talking out of my ass, but criticisms are always welcome! all that to say, i think that adam and the system that enables him within the white fang is the problem within the organization, but on the whole, racism directed against the faunus is the true root of "evil." this is something my characters recognize and acknowledge, especially blake, ilia (at least re:adam), weiss, etc.
^ get back to me about the faunus racism part in regards to marrow, i want to see where volume 8 takes his character. i will say for now that despite marrow being treated as a kid and as a soldier blindly following orders, that does not make him naive or ignorant of atlas' issues. he knows and understands them— there's definitely something bigger than that that makes him loyal to ironwood.
