Dear Future Daughter...
Dear future daughter,
One day, I’m going to get a call and it is going to be from your school. Calling to inform me that your skirt is too short, your shirt is cut too low, or your spaghetti straps that show your shoulders are too skimpy. And your outfit is too distracting to be in class, and that you are creating an environment not conducive to learning.
At this point, the school will ask me to either pick you up from school or bring you a change of clothes, but no matter what option I choose you will sit in the principals office until I arrive. Because your outfit is too revealing, too sexual, and too distracting to your peers and teachers for you to sit in class AND LEARN.
As your parent I will take a moment and think. I could agree with your school, I can pick you up and make you change your into something more “appropriate”. I could rationalize with myself saying, “maybe your dress was too short, and I could see how that could be distracting”.  But I WON’T.
Sending you to the principal’s office for your “inappropriate” outfit because it is “distracting” from the learning process is BS and I will not hesitate to call BS on your behalf.  Blaming you for this would be like blaming you for being raped, and I will not tolerate it.
I will then proceed to tell the school that instead of making you sit in the principals office on display like a scarlet A maybe they should send you back to class to learn (since that is what you are there for). And instead of chastising you, maybe they should start to address the real issues of you wearing a short skirt to school. Because it is not your skirt that is the issue, the issue is the response it MIGHT illicit from the opposite sex. I will then tell the school to stop sexualizing you and punishing you for being female, and to start disciplining the boys who can dress how ever they please while being overly sexual and overly aggressive beings.
The issue isn’t about your skirt, the issue is that you are being conditioned to believe that your body is purely sexual to the point that is distracting, and when you put your body on display it will make boys and men act indecently. While you get blamed we’re conditioning boys to take no fault in this issue, and these boys will grow into men who think it is okay to objectify, sexualize and disrespect a women’s body. What is worse is that men will feel no remorse for their actions because they were never held accountable when it mattered...when they were boys.
As a woman you will assume all of the accountability and you will feel shame for being female. And when you are older and a man disrespects you will feel the same shame you felt sitting in that principals office as a little girl for wearing a short skirt. But as a women who has been subjected to sexism for your entire life you will learn that this is just the way it is, and you will make excuses for men who treat you badly. You will start to say to yourself “You know maybe I shouldn’t have been there by myself…maybe I shouldn’t have worn such a revealing outfit.”
So when the principal ask will I bring you an extra pair of clothes or pick you up from school for wearing an “inappropriate” outfit.
I will say no, I will say HELL NO! Because I will not allow you to fall victim to the ongoing cycle of sexism I was subjected to, and I will not let you be conditioned to thinking you are just your body.
Dear future daughter, I’m a feminist for you. I want to change the system for you.

Final Reflection
I thought we were going to learn about different types of digital media and then read and write about digital media since it is an English class. I didn't think it would be so interactive in the fact that we would be creating our own media. At first I felt overwhelmed about having to create media because before this class I had zero experience.
Once I knew that we would be creating out own media my biggest objective was to learn the technology. I wasn't super familiar with things like iMovie and gimp before this class so I was nervous I wouldn't be able to learn the programs in such a short amount of time but the class is really hands on so we learned about each section thoroughly before we were forced to turn in our assignment.
I feel much more comfortable producing digital media after this class. Before this class if someone said make a video or a website I wouldn't even know where to start but now I have tons of FREE tools that are so helpful and I feel like I could make decent digital media. Also I learned how important it is too look at every part of the digital media process from the colors to how you photograph something. Because all of these elements are important to how the audience will view the finished project.
As far as the actual media I have produced in this class I'm somewhat proud of all of it. Just for completing it and using technology I had never even heard of before. But the project I am least proud of is the audio project because just audio is already such a hard medium because you only get sound and visual or tactical aids so your audio has to be really compelling. And I don't think mine was. I think part of it was my subject of a day in the life of a commuter trains wasn't very interesting and it was difficult to get cool audio of. Another reason was I personally didn't like the way my voice sounded on the voice over and I think it could have come together much better. It could have sounded better...clearer...been more interesting. The project I have liked the most has definitely been the open genre project that is a photo essay about the selfie called self(ie) love. I think I like it the most because I love selfies and I get to use my own selfies which I think make the project more personal....more like a journal of my selfie journey and less like a project. It has been difficult though because every time I try to explain my project and why I like selfies and think they're important people think I'm crazy.
** after the gallery walk I love my selfie project about ten times more than I did before when I wrote the paragraph above on Wednesday. After getting feedback and seeing how people responded to the project I feel so much better about it. At first I was nervous about tackling the selfie as a serious form of expression because when we discussed our projects in class with a partner my partner was very skeptical of my idea, so I started to really second guess myself.  But after finding my direction for the project I found it very interesting and very easy to do this final assignment
This class has given me a basic understanding of different digital media mediums. But I think I would kind of like to expand that knowledge maybe. Little bit further because I think all of this stuff will be so important for the future and us living and trying to get jobs in the digital age. Our online presence is so huge from social to blogs to websites like its important you know how to use these things to be marketable especially in today's job market. Knowing how to use technology like gimp and iMovie and knowing how to manipulate pictures and create video is something you need to know how to do. So I definitely think I'll use this knowledge in the future whether it's for a job interview or a sales pitch or anything.
Overall I'm glad I took this class and I really like some of the work I have created during this class. But the most important thing is that I actually learned something during this class, in a lot of classes I have taken during college I walk away with not one piece of retained information from the semester...I simply just seek a good grade. But with this class I actually learned how to do cool and RELEVANT stuff that I can use after this semester.

Finger Exercise #4
I looked at the model Invisible Child Girl in the Shadows: Dasani’s Homeless Life By ANDREA ELLIOTT published in the NY times.
What genre would you consider this model to be? What are some of the conventions for this genre, and how does the model fit these conventions (or not)?
This genre would be a documentary because it’s showcasing her life in poverty and the struggles she goes through every day.
What is the rhetorical purpose of the model? What is it trying to do? What message does the model have?
The purpose of the model is to shed light on childhood poverty and homelessness and the everyday struggles these kids and families go through everyday just to eat. We often see and hear about homelessness but none of us probably understand the magnitude of being homeless unless we’ve lived it, and these pictures are able to give some sense of what it is like. The take away message I think is just to be appreciative and don’t judge someone by their circumstances.
Who is the audience for this model? How do you know who the audience is?
I’m really not sure about the audience but it appears to be adults but that’s all I can really tell, and I’m honestly not even sure about that. And the only reason I say that is geared towards adults is because of the language used in the written article seemed aimed towards an older audience.
What modes are part of the model? How are these modes used, and what type of meaning do the modes convey?
The mode used throughout the model is pictures, and these pictures display a very serious tone to match the severity of the situation that Dasani and her homeless family live in.
What rhetorical appeals are part of the model? Do the rhetorical appeals make sense given the rhetorical purpose of the model? Are these rhetorical appeals part of a larger genre convention?
Rhetorical appeals include pictures of Dasani’s temporary shelter housing that is absolutely filthy, falling apart, and tiny but is home to 6 people, her mom bathing her younger sister in a sink, Dasani’s family riding the subway because they have no car, and the little amount of Christmas gifts they have under their tiny Christmas tree. All of these appeals make sense considering the model which is shedding light on homeless youth, and these images do a very good job because they evoke such strong emotion when you see them and they do a really good job of reinforcing the purpose of the model.
What are the parts of the model? How do you think the model was created (what technologies did they use, what was the process)?
The model consist of like a photo collage/timeline that is seen throughout the model, and these photos look like they were created with some type of professional camera because the pictures were extremely high quality, I’m not sure if the images were altered in terms of  brightness and clarity. With the photos there was a description/ story that went with it to give further details explaining not only the life of this little girl but what was happening in the picture to give context.
How successful do you think this model is? What makes it successful? What could be improved upon?
It was successful because the pictures made me interested enough to actually read the article that accompanied the pictures, and the article was even more interesting than the pictures. But at the same time it would be hard not to find this story interesting because it is the kind of story that tugs at your heart strings, I just feel like the artist picked a very compelling story because it would be really difficult to not feel at least a little sentimental when reading and looking at pictures of a homeless child.
What type of production do you want to create? Consider the genre and the media that you want to use.
I want to create a model that showcases the “selfie”. The genre I think would be the most useful to display my vision is a website.
What do you want your rhetorical purpose to be? What message do you want to convey?
The purpose is to show not only how impactful the “selfie” is in our everyday lives but to show selfies can have impact. The selfie is no longer just a meaningless picture you take when you think you look cute or you’re really drunk, it is a calculated photo shoot done with likes and retweets in mind. Think about it  thanks to social media it is nearly impossible to go even a day without seeing or posting a selfie, we have self-proclaimed selfie queens (like Kim Kardashian), and we spend more time picking an Instagram filter than we do on homework sometimes.
*side note* my computer autocorrects ‘Kardashian’…either her fame is very influential or I write about the Kardashians too much
A selfie allows you to connect with people, it allows you make a statement, and to display a piece of yourself without even saying a word. Everyone always says a picture is worth a thousand words and with social media such as with Myspace, Facebook, Snapchat, Instagram, and twitter those words become amplified faster and to more people. Making that statement that a picture is worth a thousand words even more relevant in the modern age than ever before.
Who do you want your audience for this production to be? How can you appeal to this specific audience?
I would say the target audience is young adults (under 25)/teenagers because this is the age group that was either raised or grew up in the social driven world so they are more likely to know what a selfie is, actually be taking selfies, and probably frequent social media sites where other people are also taking and posting selfies. Not saying that older people do not understand or take selfies I just dint think they understand the magnitude of the selfie because they were not breed on social media and smartphones, they spent the large majority of their lives without it so they don’t always
What modes could you use for this production? How can you use these modes to express meaning?
The modes would be pictures or a video of…selfies. I would attempt to use all different types of selfies. I want to show fun selfies, scary selfies, dramatic selfies, cute selfies, my own selfie, just to showcase how unique yet reflective a selfie can be depending on what your trying to portray. To accompany the video or pictures I want quotes and stuff about what people think of selfies to truly showcase the importance.
How does your idea align with what you discovered when analyzing your model? How does it deviate from what your model did?
My idea doesn’t really correlate topic wise with the model I looked up about the homeless girl other than I want to also portray my idea through pictures, because I think pictures are one of the most powerful forms of media even if words don’t accompany them. in the model I looked up the artist used long paragraphs to describe her pictures, but my goal is to let the pictures speak for themselves and not let my own words
How do you plan to create your production? What will be your process? What technologies will you use?
I’m not sure if I want to use a video or like a photo collage to display the selfies, maybe both but I want the selfies as they are with no additional editing by me so I can display exactly what the person was trying to portray.
What are some of the challenges to this project for you? What are some of the aspects that you think will be easy?
Making the website will be the hardest part because I’ve never made a website and I don’t know anything about coding or even how to make a website. Finding a wide range of selfies might be difficult but at the same time that might be the easiest part it just really
What questions do you have about this project in terms of process or product?
Is this too broad a topic to tackle, should I narrow it or change the focus?
Is there anything else you want me to know about your project or that you want to address in our conference?
Do the images have to be creative commons or fair use? And when is this due?

Artist statement: Concept in 60: What makes the holidays special?
VIDEO LINK: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lBXjuyScrWo
The holiday season seems to be a time of great joy for people and it seems to start when the leaves start to change color on the early fall and doesn't end until New Year’s. This time of year seems to be made magical by the beauty of the leaves, the serenity that going to the pumpkin patch provides the beauty of the first snow, and the excitement of opening up your first gift on Christmas. Going to the pumpkin patch, eating thanksgiving dinner, and buying Christmas gifts all seem to be the things that make the season special but the truly magical feeling comes from doing these things with the people that mean the most to you. The beauty of fall leaves and Christmas morning would lose their meaning if you couldn't do them with people you love, whether it is your friends or your family.
I choose to do my concept in 60 on the holiday season starting with fall and ending with Christmas because this seems to be a very special time of year for many people and many people often categorize it as their favorite time of year. But the reasons why this is their favorite time of year seem to be misguided, because what makes the holidays special isn't what you do, it’s who you do it with and I wanted to highlight this in my concept in 60.
In my concept in 60 video I took images people associate with fall, thanksgiving, and Christmas such as pumpkins, leaves, food, snowmen, Christmas trees, etc. and showed a progression of the season starting with fall and ending with Christmas. I made almost all of the images black and white to strip away their beauty and the appeal people have to them, so for example the beauty of the fall leaves kind of lose their beauty when you can’t see the pretty reds, yellows, and oranges. By stripping the leaves and other images of their color I hope to strip away the attachment people have to them, and force the viewer to rethink why they even like these things in the first place. There are about 5 images in color throughout my video and this is to highlight the things that I think are truly important about the holiday season and where the “holiday magic” actually comes from. So the images in color are of people happy and laughing with their friends and family to show that this is what actually makes the holidays special. So a Christmas tree is just a Christmas tree until you add memories to it with the people you care about. At the end of the video I added a picture (in color) of a quote to help my viewer conceptualize my idea and what I was trying to show more clearly, the quote said that everyday's a holiday that you get to spend with your friends and family and the happiness that is produced while in their presence, and that happiness has nothing to do with what time of year it is. Then at the very end I put a video of a burning candle, that goes out and the screen fades to darkness, and this is the end of the video, and I chose the candle because the slide before had pictures of candles and the candle just seemed festive so I decided it would be a nice touch to add to the holiday theme.
For sound I added “Carol of the Bells- Dark Christmas song (piano version only)” throughout the entire video. I was skeptical about adding such a recognizable Christmas song to the entire video, even to the parts that were not about Christmas but the somber mood of the song really fit the mood I was trying to portray with the black and white images. I also think the song added a lot emotion to the video that really grabs the viewer and makes them think about the holidays differently. I was going to layer other sounds like the sound of eaves for fall but I thought the sound of the leaves on top of the song was distracting, and the song provides more emotion so I decided to keep it.

Blog post for October 31.
My concept in 60 about fall and is of things that people think of when they hear or think about fall. Is there any images you think of when you think of fall that I don’t have? Would you change any of the images? Do you have any suggestions for sound or music to add to the video?
Peer review During the peer review I got a lot of great ideas. The best idea was to make the video in black and white so people can create their own interpretations of fall instead of just all the typical fall colors or yellow, red, and orange. I really think I'm going to do this because I think it adds an interesting angle you wouldn't think of when you think of fall. Another idea I'm really contemplating is taking a "cynical" approach as we called it during our discussion, because I don't really like fall and my original idea was to portray all the reasons people like fall. But I think portraying in a less positive light will be a unique lens to look at fall. Im still not sure about what sounds I'm going to add to the video, my group suggested the sound of the wind blowing or leaves crunching when you step on them. These sounds would probably be good there are images of outside, and maybe when I have images of candy and trick or treat, I can have sounds of kids laughing and playing. My group also suggested I include thanksgiving as part of fall, because they expressed that fall is less about pumpkin and the leaves changing and more about the feeling you get seri these things. Which I agree with so maybe I'll try to incorporate more emotion into the video.

Blog post.
I have two ideas about in 60 project. I either want to show the progression of fall starting with the trees that are still green and then transitioning into the trees that are now completely orange or red. Or I want to show different types of art (like sculptures, paintings, mixed media, drawings...in multiple genres) to show how subjective art can be and it truly depends on perception. If I decide to the fall idea I want to take my own pictures of different trees and then but them in the video gradually showing the change from green (summer) to orange/red (fall) and then if I can find it a tree that is leafless which is what eventually represents winter. As the trees change I would either want a song playing or people talking explaining what fall is to them. I think this idea would be cool because of all the different angles I could shoot the trees from and seeing the the progression of the trees would be visually appealing. As for the art idea I would want to have the different examples of art be pictures too. But I'm not exactly sure if I could find a large variety of art that is Creative Commons. And I'm also not sure what the audio would be at the point, because I'm not sure if speaking or music...maybe both would be effective.

Audio Story
For the day in the life assignment I decided to do the day in the life of a college commuter. I chose this topic because unless you commute you probably don't know the difficulties many commuters face every day. Simple things such as arriving to class on time, parking, traffic, making sure you know the weather (because if it starts raining and you don't have an umbrella with you...you are in major trouble). And these are all things students who live on campus (or close to campus) might not understand such as the difficulty of things that seem so simple. For example If I have a 9:10 class I have to leave my house (which is about 20 minutes away) up to an hour earlier just to insure I arrive to class on time.  Because traffic between 7:00 and 9:00 a.m. is absolutely horrible, especially if there is a traffic accident, and you can easily spend 30-45 minutes alone in traffic and you haven't even gotten to campus yet. Once on campus parking can become difficult but no matter where you park you will end up paying either daily or by getting a parking pass, because you will get a ticket if you don't have a parking pass and don't pay...I know from experience, 7 parking tickets of experience. However I park on west campus which feels like an extremely far distance from all of my classes on north campus. So after being stuck in traffic for 30 minutes you then have to wait (in the sometime bitter cold, rain, and snow) for a bus to take you to north campus. All of this can make for pretty stressful mornings if you're late, having a bad day, or lacking sleep because you pulled an all-nighter. And for the entire school year this is often you’re everyday as a commuter and if you don't commute I think you can lack understanding and in turn lack empathy for some of the struggles commuters’ face every day just getting to campus, which is why I decided to do my audio story on this particular subject.
There are many difficult aspects of being a commuter aside from just getting to campus that I had to choose a focus since the audio story was only two to five minutes in length. But there are many other challenging aspects of not living on campus including something as simple as getting involved because many of these activities and events take place on the weekend or on evenings after you've already left campus and the only thing worse than the commute to campus during morning rush hour is the commute back to or from campus during evening rush hour. So you tend to miss out on the “college experience” living on campus can offer. But hopefully introducing just a little bit of what is it like to be a commuter and maybe offer some insight to non-commuters who don't have the ability to see these daily challenges.

Reflection of peer review
The feedback my group gave me was really helpful because they all said they could relate to my topic which was really nice because I was a little unsure of my idea because I didn't know if it would be interesting or relatable. I was also thinking about making my script longer but they said that it seemed about the right length just go thru it and touch it up. The suggestions they gave me for sounds were really nice too. Like the sound of the radio playing, cars, other drivers, buses, etc was helpful because I think it will add depth to my script. I'm still a little nervous of being able to fill 2-3 minutes with just my script but I think with their suggestions I can supplement my script with a lot of Useful audio. Reading the essay out loud and my groups opinions really helped me get a more complete picture of what I eventually want my final Project to look and sound like, because before I had pieces of my project but I was having trouble putting them together so all the pieces fit well together.

Finger Exercise #2
I listened to Mike Pesca on slate radio, the name of the episode was Gist 9/26 part 3: Prudie: The Cheater Gets Caught and the original air date was September 26. The episode was a follow up story about a man who wrote into the show about an experience he had where he got very intoxicated one night and cheated on his longtime girlfriend at a party. A few weeks later the man got a call from this girl (who he cheated with) saying she was pregnant and he was one of three men who might be the father and this man originally wrote into the show for advice for whether he should tell his girlfriend.  In the end he decided not to tell his girlfriend (even though they suggested he tell his girlfriend because of the amount of people who knew about the affair), the baby was born and he wasn’t the father. But eventually his girlfriend found out about the affair and this was discussed during the follow up interview with this man.
I’d say that the purpose of this podcast was to be both informative and entertaining. The podcast could be helpful to someone in a similar situation which is why I called it informative but I think the main goal was to be entertaining because their talking about a man who cheated on his girlfriend not breaking news.
The vocal delivery was conversational which was nice because it made it easy to listen to, I almost felt like I was listening to the radio. And I think this approach matched their subject matter, their voices were strong, loud, consistent, and recognizable but not authoritative like they were discussing very important subject matters. What I didn’t like was that there was very little outside noises besides the two people speaking which made it a little hard to focus at times because it was two people talking for ten minutes straight, but I found the subject matter very interesting so that made it a little easier to focus for the ten minutes. I would listen to the podcast again if the subject matter was as entertaining as it was on this particular episode because the subject of the podcast was why I even chose to watch the podcast in the first place.

Photo Essay: More than School
School can be one of the strongest and most important socializing factors in a child’s life and often has a great impact on the child. From the time of your first day school until the moment you graduate (or finish), school is where you spend a large majority of your time and build some of your most meaningful relationships. This photo essay attempts to show that although schools around the world look different, the students who inhibit these classrooms are not and neither are the relationships these children form inside their different classrooms. The goal of is to hopefully showcase  that people often share more similarities than they realize and even something as simple as children and their classrooms can relay this message successfully.

Rough Draft- 1000 Words photo essay assignment
School is one of the strongest socializing factors in one’s life behind the family unit and the media (social media included). From the time your five years old and start your first day of kindergarten until the moment you graduate high school, school is where you spend most of your time and build some of your most meaningful relationships outside of your family. This photo essay attempts to show that although school classrooms and curriculums around the world look different, the students who inhibit these classrooms are not different and neither are the relationships these children form inside their different classrooms. The goal is to help people realize that we often share more similarities with people than we realize even if they don't look, talk, or act exactly like us.

AUthors Note
I constructed the images of these children in their school settings to show that when it comes down to it a lot of us share many similarities no matter what part of the world we grow up in. For example all of these children live in different parts of the world yet in these pictures of them in their classrooms all look similar in the fact that each picture just depicts happy children in school, as if they grew up minutes apart from each other and not thousands of miles away. Hopefully just to reinforce that differences are only as big as as important as you make them.
Adults are the intended audience but children were used throughout the photo essay because children are normally associated with an innocence that affects how adults perceive them. Children tend to get a more compassionate response from adults. I also purposefully choose happy children because living here in the United States when we see children ion other counties, these children are normally depicted as poor, hungry, and sad which often degrades the image we have of not only these children but that country. And I wanted to show that kids in these countries live lives similar to kids here in the United States, reinforcing the fact that as human beings we are all quite similar.
I tried not to manipulate the images of the children too much because I wanted the picture to stay as natural as these children appeared to be and I also didn't want to distract from the children by complicating the picture. But I did make all the pictures black and white because I wanted to make sure all the pictures were “equal” so that the audience paid attention to the actually children and their facial expressions. But other than that no other technology was used on the pictures.
Ultimately I want to show a commonality between different people of the world by using the medium of school, but I’m not exactly sure how I want to do this with the next five images. I don’t know if  I want to take the picture of the children in their schools and put them next to another picture as like a comparison or just add five more pictures of children in their school in five more different parts of the world.

  Authors Note:
Tim Tebow is one of the most iconic players to ever grace the football field, but his notoriety had little to with football, it had to do with his outward and constant   expression of his faith. The fascination with Tim Tebow is interesting because people either seem to like him or find his presence down right irritating, but why it is that a deeply religious man who plays football can illicit so many different responses? The picture depicts Tim Tebow praying with a bible quote and originally he was on the football field but I took out that background of the football field and added to the picture of the field with the cross in it. I choose the picture of the picture of Tim Tebow praying because it is what he is most known for, and I choose the picture of the field with the cross in it because people often feel like Tim Tebow wanted to turn the football field into some religious place that it shouldn't be, which is why I in the end choose to combine these pictures.
