Retronator 2019 Retrospective
Happy holidays everyone! I hope you’re enjoying a nice end of 2019 and are getting recharged before we head into the next decade.
It’s been quite a year for me, from big life changes to important work milestones:
I moved to Sweden to live at Spelkollektivet, the biggest coworking and coliving space for game developers. It’s awesome here.
Gameplay for the first chapter of Pixel Art Academy, Admission Week, was completed, together with my new hybrid 3D/pixel art graphics engine. I released the alpha version to all players who backed or pre-ordered the game.
I started my personal study plan to become better at drawing concept art. While I didn’t keep up with daily drawing practice like intended, I did finish the artworks you see above. I have more in development (they are mostly waiting for an upgrade to my 3D Paint drawing tool). I’ve also done some concept art for The Venus Project.
Participated at Chaos Constructions, where my artwork won in the ZX Spectrum category. Created my first jam game at Ludum Dare 45.
I finished drawing portraits for Courier of the Crypts, a small commission I did for Emberheart Games. The game got released in April this year, go check it out.
Finally, I started writing for this blog again on a daily basis, after two years of hiatus.
I tracked my work hours the whole year in 2019 and on average I spent 30 hours per week working on Pixel Art Academy. These were fully-productive hours with all breaks and distractions taken out of the workday. For creative professions I think it’s an adequate number, but ideally it’d be closer to 35. Still, to prevent burnout, I let myself be completely happy with 30+.
Additionally, I spent 4 hours per week on average practicing drawing (and occasionally studying other aspects of game development). I’d like to get this closer to 7, to improve faster and create more artworks.
Other than that, no big changes planned for next year as I’m very happy with my life. I hope I will be able to continue working full-time on Pixel Art Academy and that’s all I really wish for. Big thanks to my Patreon supporters and people pre-ordering the game for making it possible. <3
And thank you for reading and liking and reblogging my posts. I’ll do my best to bring you even more pixel art content next year. My best wishes for 2020 to you!
