The Canada disability benefit won't end disability poverty, even if the government doesn't make the evil policy choice of using the DTC as the gateway. Most people with disabilities live in market rental units and many paying below-market or near-market rents are one eviction away from becoming homeless. Let's say a person with a disability was brought up to the market basket measure poverty line, which doesn't include disability-related cost at about 27000 dollars for 2023, you'd have to have enough money to pay 28k a year on average 1bdrm metro Vancouver, and the numbers don't look any better for most of the major Canadian cities in Canada https://liv.rent/blog/rent-reports/toronto/…. Some people might be thinking that smaller towns would be cheaper, but you'd be wrong. Tons of people fled the cities to go move to those small towns and as a result, the rents are sky-high there too. The Canada disability benefit will be a help, but without a major war effort-style plan to tackle our housing emergency, it'll be a band-aid on a dam leak.

My fears about the CDB might just come true
On the PWD allies podcast 7:19-8:00, Mike Morrice says he had heard from a group that met with government officials who had been planning the possibility of using the #DTC to access the #CDB. This cannot happen, it will exclude hundreds of thousands of pwd living in legislated poverty.

The fact that the government is considering using the DTC as the gateway to the #CDB is simply disgusting, this shows they have completely ignored testimony from witnesses and organizations, but also from the lived experience of the many people who wrote letters and briefs well C22 was being studied.
Across the country, hundreds of thousands of disabled people found a spark of hope when the DTC was announced. We have been living in legislated poverty hell for decades. We have been dying, starving, facing homelessness, systematic abuse, ableism, and eugenics.
I can't stress enough how important it is, that the DTC not be maid the sole gateway to the DTC. It is a guarantee disabled people who had high hopes of finally getting financial relief, only to find out that they are excluded from a life-saving benefit, will in fact kill themselves, be it by maid or their own hand.
Enough is enough, the inhumane and outright criminal treatment of people with disabilities must end.
