It is easy to get out of wrist grabs, but it is not easy to turn the tables and control your opponent.  In Harmony Aikido, we practice this sequence to learn how to execute the technique and receive the technique.  You can see from the video I demonstrated this sequence blindfolded.  It is to show that with enough practice you will be able to execute this sequence effectively without having to see the opponent.  If you want to see more, please let me know.

Jo - What is it?
Simply, a Jo is 4 foot, 2 inches tall wooden staff.  It is traditionally used by jo-jutsu and Aikido practitioners.  Did you know, some Japanese police force even equip themselves with the Jo! The Jo is also a weapon of legend. Seriously, the Jo has it own legend.  The selection of Jo material and exact length was given to Muso Gonnosuke through a divine dream.   Then Gonnosuke developed Jo technique that leads to the only recorded defeat of the famous swordsman Miyamoto Musashi.  I don’t know about you, but this is pretty awesome.
Stay tune.  I will share more Jo videos.

There are many different types of knife-disarming techniques.  You will notice the ones that I showed in this video require the victim (me) to feel the tip of the knife in order to execute the disarming technique.  The most notable reason is that I am blindfolded.  If I have my eyesight, I would probably use a different technique.  If you are interested in seeing more knife-disarming techniques, please let me know.

After watching my video, I challenge you to grab your friend or family member's wrist.  Ask them to get out of your grip without striking you.  You will find that they will either swing their arm wildly or do some type of reverse grip (and that is only assuming that they know what to do).  After they demonstrate, show them my easy escape method.  You will notice two things.  One is the obvious: you just escaped from the one-wrist grab; the other thing you will notice is that your stance has not been compromised.  You have the ability to either strike back or control as the video has shown. Tip: If the grip is too strong, use your other hand to help you pull your wrist out of their grip.

I was invited by the Arcadia police to attend their First Annual Safety Expo. It was a great expo. I am very happy that Arcadia police department spend their time and resources in partnering with vendors like us in educating their community the importance of safety and security. I can see that next year safety expo is going to be in a larger venue with more vendors and attendees.

I had the opportunity over the weekend to teach over 150 girls self-defense at the Hacienda Heights Community Center. I want to say thank you to Supervisor Janice Hahn and the LA County Park and Recreation directors in supporting us and making this event possible. According to Olivia Perea, the Recreation Services Manager, we have out grown this venue and we will be looking for a bigger location next year. I am so happy that I was part of this event, and I can't wait for next year Girl Empowerment Event. #harmonyaikidofounation #janicehahn #lacountyparksandrec #oliviaperea

The Redmen suit is awesome, and I gave it a nick name the Red Scare. The Red Scare offered me an unique opportunity to provide 180 girls realistic attacks without hurting myself and others. The suit is hot and it works best wearing under armor long sleeves and exercise pants.

The simplest way to remember how to stop a side-head strike is your normal reaction to stopping a door from slamming into you.  You will not hold your arm up in a "L" shape to stop the door.  You will actually reach out with your arm to stop the door.  That is exactly how you stop a side-head strike.

This is the first question my students always ask me when I show this basic self-defense technique.  Who grabs like that?  Why would they use two hands to grab one wrist?  The answer is quite simple.  Someone will probably never use both of their hands to grab if you’re in a street fight, but if the predator wants to kidnap you and drag you to their vehicle quickly, this would be a very likely and possible attack.  So back to the questions.  Who grabs like that?  The answer is kidnappers and predators.  Why would they use two hands to grab one wrist?  The kidnapper or predator needs to move quickly with the most amount of force.  That is why they would use two hands to grab one wrist and they are probably pulling you into an alley or vehicle.
