So Dee, do you have any ideas about the reason behind Arthur and Eames totems?
why now.. I have many ideas :D
is it because Nolan (not so) secretly shipped these two mfers and decided to give them matching totems?
is it because, as jgl once said, eames was a lil shit who copied arthur (indirectly implying imitation is the best form of flattery with a serious case of “I wanna be like him/I want him”, cause we all know jgl knows that we know that he knows) ?
is it because arthur is still unable to forget how many many moons ago, he was wasting his army cut-off away, before he was peeled off the streets by the cobbs and eames wants to keep the memories of tagging along with his mother to work and collecting fallen poker chips?
or is it because they were gifts to each other, a chip to specify and a dice to turn up only the real face out of many, unknowingly making each other their respective tethers to reality?
or is it because, they had different totems (a wrist watch for arthur and a fidget spanner for eames), but after the job which made them realise how stupid they were been, they got these matching totems to remind each other how they can’t gamble their life anymore, as it now belongs to someone else?
or is it because the wedding rings were too damn expensive?

Osculation 8/50 - in secrecy (from this list)
Follows on from here. Made the decision to shift these over to ao3 because the length of each one keeps creeping up.
Tumblr media
“Cobbs been asking questions,” Eames says, out of the blue.
They’re sitting on the sofa with plates of bolognese on their knees. The television is set to something about jellyfish, because Eames had objected to Junkyard Wars. Arthur resists the urge to glance round at him, to see what expression accompanies the bland tone of Eames’ voice.
“I didn’t realise you two were in contact,” Arthur replies, talking around a mouthful of food.

Got a question for you.. How do you think the first time arthur personally tended to eames IV lines went? And why was it done so? cause lbr, inception level two was NAWT the first time it happened .. go wild!
Hello Nonnie! This is an interesting question!
That's the scene that made the ship for me, there's just so much care and tenderness to it... as you say, there's no way it was the first time it happened, Eames didn't bat an eye, it's almost as if he expected it, the familiarity between them in that scene is delicious.
Still, it's not something that happens regularly, or even that often, it's like a special treat for certain situations, high stakes situations in one way or another; it's both a form of reassurance and an excuse to have a few seconds of relative almost privacy to talk without attracting attention.
As for the first time it happened, I had to stew on it a little. I don't see it as a playful thing, not in the intention behind it at least, though we all know what the end result was, but that's just the desired effect of the gesture and what's behind it, reassuring and relaxing the other and themselves.
So, I think the first time it happened was very early on actually, when they were both still very green, and maybe they didn't even really see eye-to-eye yet, they were too different and too young and proud and trying to survive. Personally, I headcanon them meeting for the first time when they were both part of the military's first experiments with dreamsharing, and I like it in this context too because it lends an element of necessity to what they needed to do and even their forced and prolonged proximity, but really the setting could be on any job early on in their acquaintance. What's important is that they were not so very experienced yet, and in fact they were still honing the skills they would be renowned for.
And well, for how wonderful it is, dreamsharing can be dangerous, it's pretty easy to lose yourself. And I think that could be especially true for forgers, who become other people altogether and could lose their sense of self. And maybe one day they witnessed it happen to someone and it shifted their perspective of something they had till that moment perceived as just wonderful, suddenly even the dreaming itself had consequences.
Eames in particular got apprehensive and scared, for obvious reasons, and was of a mind to abort the whole thing because ti really wasn't worth the risk, but of course he couldn't do it, either because he had to follow his superiors' orders or because of the power and reach of their client who had threatened them, or he simply didn't want to back down because it was personal, or he simply liked the challenge despite everything, or even something else. So he got ready to face the risk but he was really anxious.
And Arthur noticed, and he couldn't stand there and do nothing, but he couldnt' exactly coddle him, there was no time and no privacy and they weren't close enough for it, not to mention Arthur was nervous too. He saw Eames' hands trembling slightly though, barely noticeable but Arthur and Eames had developed a habit of looking at each other like hawks to spot any weaknesses in their rivalry, and so he picked it up. So Arthur got an idea and jumped on that chance to hook Eames up to the PASIV himself and have him know he wasn't alone and that everything was going to be alright, because he was going to make sure of it. Maybe there could have even be a hand squeeze.
And then it all went well and Arthur was able to be there to remove the needle from Eames' wrist too, as a final check up. And it's where they started to really respect each other, or at least it gave a spark that maybe there was more to the other than first met the eye, and it made them more open to the other.
Since then they've done it a few times, it's become one of their many hidden ways of communication: be careful down there, it's gonna be chaos and aI can't protect you; keep an eye on that extractor, I don't think they're trustworthy; come on, just a little more, think of the tropical beach that's waiting for us; I'm on your side, always (even if we just spent the whole job arguing and fighting with each other); security's gonna run you down hard.

idk about stateside, nolan sure did imply arthur has “someone” in his life,
Tumblr media Tumblr media
who waited, is waiting for him,
Tumblr media Tumblr media
and kinda did an ok job elaborating who exactly is that
Tumblr media
Cobb: “you?” Arthur: “Stateside.” Cobb: “Send my regards.”
Nolan, probably: this counts as character development. We are implying Arthur has someone waiting for him there. No, we will not elaborate

arthur leaves cause he’s afraid to be the one left behind
Tumblr media
reading your fics and drabbles makes think that you sort of write arthur as the “leaver”? or is it just that I am reading it wrong? I love your fics and I’m really curious to know whether you make that choice intentionally, and if yes, which traits of arthur makes you write him as one, or whether you don’t make it so at all and I’m reading it that way.. xoxo
Hi Anon,
I’m very touched that you’ve read some of the things I’ve written, thank you very much! I really enjoyed thinking about this, thank you so much for asking <3 And I’d just like to say, you’re not reading anything wrong, because there is no wrong. We all bring our own experiences into play when we read things, and I might write something, but your interpretation and what this means to you is just as valid as mine :) Because this thing is collaborative <3
I do think he could/would leave. (I mean, I think Eames could/would too, for a given set of circumstances, but that maybe the underlying reasoning would be different.) I don’t know that I do it intentionally, as such, but maybe it reflects a sort of basic tenet of how I tend to headcanon him. (Under a cut, because I couldn’t shut up)
I suppose on some level, while the specifics are somewhat nebulous, I tend to think of him as somebody with absent caregivers in some way. Somebody who has had one or more people physically leave him, be that deliberately or not. And for me the thing here is physically, because there is also an element of his upbringing that I see as being cared for emotionally. I think he felt loved, despite of or in addition to some of the other aspects (And maybe that’s sort of a foil for a physically present by emotionally absent aspect of how I tend to think of Eames’).
Maybe his father left when he was young. Maybe this was by choice, or maybe he went to prison. Maybe his mother left him with her sister when he was 6. Maybe he was left with his grandmother when his mother died. There’s lots of ways that could go, and I think they’d all have their own different flavours to add.
I suppose I tend to hold this as a consideration when I am trying to figure out how he might react to something, particularly relationships. Maybe this leads me to write Arthur as somebody with an underlying sense of ‘I am not enough. People leave because I am not enough; I didn’t do enough; they didn’t want me enough to stay.’ Which is an oversimplification, and misses out a lot of other stuff, but broadly speaking this tends to be something I come back to.
I suppose my headcanon is that this is his frame of reference, kind of. That’s his experience so far. His expectation, because that is how it has always gone previously, is that people leave. The details of how this plays out in his present probably differ depending on the story and the nature of who/how it occured in the past, and is in no way a given, but like a lot of things probably has an element of self-preservation in the mix – if he leaves first, he can’t get left behind again.
As to which traits lead me to this... Maybe it’s partly an extrapolation based on seeing arthur as protective and caring. Perhaps perversely, the scene with Saito and the helicopter is sticking in my head. Arthur turning back to cobb, saying ‘we should walk away’. Arthur doesn’t walk away despite his misgivings, but I also don’t think cutting his losses is a new thing for him.
I think he’d walk from something if it pissed him off, or served no purpose, if this didn’t clash with his cares or loyalties; if leaving seemed like the ‘right’ option. I think loyalty might cloud the issue. That said, this clash, the internal dilemma, makes me mentally rub my hands together and is definitely something something I’d like to explore more generally, and not just in terms of his relationship with Eames.
This might all sound like a contradiction, and maybe it is. I don’t think he stuck with Cobb just because he felt it was his duty or just because that’s the sort of person he is; I think there is a lot of genuine care and affection in there. But maybe there is also an element to it that leads me to try and understand by looking at it through the lens of Arthur trying to ensure that Cobb wasn’t another ‘person who left’ in some way.
Which isn't to say that leaving is a bad thing. Sometimes leaving is the best thing. Or maybe it's neither. But if we're talking A/E then what I want is for them to be together. Even if he does leave, I'd be writing it so they could make up, and find the space for each other.
For me, I think he’d be capable of leaving, of hurting himself like that, because I think he would be emotionally invested enough to feel the need to try and preserve himself that way. In my little fantasy land in my head, he wouldn't be leaving for lack of love. He might think that leaving was the logical thing, what he should do, despite feeling something else. I think he feels a lot, across a broad spectrum, but that 'should' sometimes shouts loudest.

arthureames university au.
they live in dorms. they are roommates. arthur wants to graduate summa cum laude. eames wants to have sex with his roommate. these are both very difficult goals to achieve.
eames is majoring in anthropology and minoring in sociology
all of his electives are languages
arthur is majoring in something awful like finance or business
or perhaps Computer Information Systems which is apparently something that exists
arthur assumes eames is a slacker because he's always lounging around their dorm but eames has a 4.0 gpa
eames assumes lots of things about arthur every single day and he tells arthur about each and every one of them
which is annoying not only because it's hard to study with eames yapping in his ear but also because eames is always correct
eames makes it a personal goal to sleep with arthur before arthur graduates (he is set to graduate two years early)
arthur of course decides to kiss eames the moment his commencement ceremony is over
but really. the guy was taking like 8 courses a semester. how was he supposed to have a sex life in those conditions
arthur liked eames from day 1 but he actively chose not to because if he started sleeping with his roommate he would never get anything done
eames meanwhile flirts with arthur for an entire semester before realizing he genuinely has a crush on the guy
shortly after moving in with each other, eames makes some off-hand reference to some obscure art movement, effortlessly and correctly relating it to a book he read recently
arthur nearly breaks his pencil from the strain of not walking over, sitting on eames' lap, and tearing his clothes off
eames thinks arthur hates him but the truth is that arthur is shoving his feelings down so hard that the man is vibrating on a constant basis

so, what do you think a trait arthur and eames usually can’t tolerate in other people, but is willing to look past because of the extremes fondness they have for each other? and/or what is the one quality of each other that even after years and years of togetherness, they can’t seem to get over ?
Hi! Thank you for giving me something nice to think about, it's been quite a shitty annoying day.
So, I think Arthur is a pretty straightforward person, and so one of the things he despises most is when people lie or keep things from him, even if it's for noble reasons like protecting him. And Eames has a chronic inability to give a straight answer, but tends to joke and deflect, for a myriad of reasons: fear to admit his feelings, attempt to avoid difficult conversations, just because he likes acting mysterious...
Arthur has confronted him about it multiple times but ultimately always forgives him, because he understands Eames sometimes feels anxious, or doesn't want to worry him, and he has come to appreciate Eames' versions of little surprises and the thrill of anticipation, like small merry chases.
As for Arthur the trait he possesses that peeves Eames off is that he can't help correct people and specify things even in situations when it's not that important to be so very precise. It's not even that he does it in an annoying way, only sometimes and mostly on the job while arguing with obtuse people, just the fact that he can't let it go and just shut up about it.
I have to admit I'm guilty of being a little like that too and my friends merely tease me about it because they understand it's a harmless habit, but I understand it could tick off some people. Namely Eames in this case. At first he found the habit insufferable on Arthur too, but now it's just a mostly endearing quirk of his personality worth teasing about sometimes. And Arthur has enough self-awareness to accept it gracefully.
On to the other question, Eames will always be blown away by how caring and kind Arthur always is despite living the harsh unforgiving life of a criminal. And I don't mean with him in private and their family and friends, but on the job too and with strangers he will sometimes act purely out of selflessness, maybe just small little things, but Eames can't help but notice everything and fall in love all over again with how big Arthur’s heart is, though he hides it well.
And what Arthur can't get over about Eames is how devoted he is. He gives the impression of being fickle but really once you manage to get in the circle of his loved ones and he feels like you belong to him, either as friend or even more as a lover/love interest, he'll do absolutely everything for you, from fighting off the Mob, to bring you coffee when you're swamped with work, to drop everything to get to you on the other side of the world, to joke and prod to try and cheer you up.
Also they both still manage to surprise each other at times, not only they still have that ability but they're still willing to put in the effort for the other.

Hi Dee! So who do you think is more of a risk taker, Arthur or Eames?
Most of Arthur’s motives on the job seem to be to protect his team from danger, but I usually headcanon him as being quite fearless and maybe enjoying the thrill of danger for himself. Enjoying being thrown any sort of unexpected shit and still coming up on top, that's his point of pride and what makes him best as his job (and of course his level of preparedness helps but as we saw there's always something that comes up).
On the other end Eames reads to me as someone who's rather cautious and cares about his own safety, probably before anyone else (with the exception of Arthur, he'd do anything for him). He seems to be more one for an intellectual challenge, and unleashing the full power of a mind's creativity is what gets him off, so to speak.
Does it make sense? That's how I read them but sometimes it seems a bit contradicting, I don't know. Do you read them differently?
I’m sorry I took a lot of time this is such a great ask I had so much fun thinking about this thanks for sending this ily val ♥️
one of the best qualities arthur and eames as characters have is being able to carry two very contradicting traits at the same time. imo, that’s the reason that they’ve continued to stand the test of time as well and the reason why we can easily imagine them in any given situation or an au. pirates? yes! bakery owners? yes yes! pirates who sell fluffy crumpets? yes yes yes!!
having said that, I absolutely agree with you. arthur often being a very cautious guy because he has already thought of (and is secretly enjoying) the most unprecedented and unpredicted thing that can happen and eames being a natural risk taker because he is already well prepared and has made five different escape plans (in his secret moleskin) , makes so much sense.
an on dreamhusbands (my favourite) front, it again hits home cause, what if the reason arthur and eames didn’t see eye to eye the first few times they crossed paths was because they thought the other one was too cautious or too reckless? and the relationship slowly growing as the time goes on, when they realise that the rigid point man is actually quite impressive and the sloppy forger is actually very specific?
it also brings a sense of comfort they can find in each other ; about the whole “relationships where you can rest”.. for arthur, he finds someone who he can rely on the days wants to try the deep end himself, knowing eames will excellently cover his 6o clock and be very creaful about it, and for eames, he finds someone who is willing to take his hand and promise him everything is gonna be just fine, so therefore no, you must never be afraid to dream a little bigger?
