Antes do começo
Se nos quisesse perfeitos,
nos fizesse perfeitos.
Como se chega ao extremo?
Vivendo.
Sal demais, nenhum sal.
Um dia após muitos outros dias. É longo o caminho.
Chão acidentado,
desprezo,
declives,
quedas.
reciprocidade
premeditada.
Alguma bondade nos
servirá a todos, melhor
defendê-la.
Vou contar o que sei.
É pouco.
Vi apenas a cena
principal, mas foi o que
me bastou
para o resto da vida.
Passei a acompanhar a
repercussão nos jornais e
revistas,
li e ouvi entrevistas,
versões romanceadas,
investigações agressivas.
Muito foi sendo
revelado:
infância, fé, entranhas.
O indizível.
As maledicências.
Os apelos desesperados.
A comoção dilacerante.
Algumas fotografias
observei,
demoradamente,
buscando na geografia
dos rostos,
na curvatura das
espinhas dorsais,
o percurso que levou
aquelas pessoas até ali,
o lugar onde nos
encontramos. À hora
Exata.
Sorte ou azar?
Destino?
Fluxo?
Quem pode reduzir a
uma palavra
o que a sincronicidade
engendrou?
Foi com esse barro que
me dei um deus,
feito à minha imagem e
semelhança, e que tudo
viu.
Cada coração, cada
fígado, cada genitália.
Todos os céus e infernos
e silêncios.
Tornei inseparáveis “o
que foi” e “o que poderia
ser”.
Fiz do possível o
provável, e dele, o óbvio.
Nada me foi indiferente.
E ainda assim, nada me
comoveu um outro
desfecho.
Por ironia, ao longo de
todos esses anos
o que mais pesou em
mim foi a felicidade.
Sim, a felicidade às vezes
é uma manta curta,
não dá para todos.
Puxei com demasiada
força a minha parte.
As consequências, ainda
hoje, varam minhas
madrugadas.
Não há consolo em dizer
que o que nos acontece,
nos acontece.
Parte fazemos, parte nos
fazem.
Às vezes, é preciso ir
longe para chegar vindo
de trás e alcançar a
véspera da véspera da
véspera do
acontecimento. O
momento preciso em que
tomamos ou somos
tomados por uma
direção e um belo dia...
ou um triste dia, somos o que somos.
Vamos ao começo.

“É necessário preservar o avesso, você me disse.

Was grün ist! O erste Seite des Buchs
Des erwarteten, sehr überraschende! Lies
Langsam, allzuschnell
Wird der ungelesene Teil dir dünn! Und der erste Wasserguß
In das verschweißte Gesicht! Das frische
Kühle Hemd! O Beginn der Liebe! Blick, der wegirrt!
O Beginn der Arbeit! Öl zu füllen
In die kalte Maschine! Erster Handgriff und erstes Summen
Des anspringenden Motors! Und erster Zug
Rauchs, der die Lungen füllt! Und du
Neuer Gedanke!”

“An old-growth forest, a mountain range, or a river valley is more important and certainly more lovable than any country will ever be. I could weep for a river valley, and I have. But for a country? Oh man, I don’t know.”

divisamos a mesma espada
sobre nossa cabeça.
Somos todos irmãos
não porque tenhamos
o mesmo berço, o mesmo sobrenome:
temos um mesmo trajeto
de sanha e fome.
Somos todos irmãos
não porque seja o mesmo sangue
que no corpo levamos:
o que é o mesmo é o modo
como o derramamos.
Ferreira Gullar

The best translations into English do not, in fact, read as if they were originally written in English. The English words are arranged in such a way that the reader sees a glimpse of another culture’s patterns of thinking, hears an echo of another language’s rhythms and cadences, and feels a tremor of another people’s gestures and movements.

Democracy will not come
Today, this year
Nor ever
Through compromise and fear.
I have as much right
As the other fellow has
To stand
On my two feet
And own the land.
I tire so of hearing people say,
Let things take their course.
Tomorrow is another day.
I do not need my freedom when I’m dead.
I cannot live on tomorrow’s bread.
Freedom
Is a strong seed
Planted
In a great need.
I live here, too.
I want freedom
Just as you.

Permanency is no longer where I seek comfort; instead, I am finding meaning in those bright, fugitive moments I can never fully capture. Rather than looking for a sense of home in a place I have yet to discover, I am creating it for myself, over and over again.

Language is what eases the pain of living with other people, language is what makes the wounds come open again. I have heard that anthropologists prize those moments when a word or bit of language opens like a keyhole into another person, a whole alien world roars past in some unassigned phrase. You remember Proust so appalled when Albertine lets fall “get her pot broken.” Or you hear a Berliner say “squat town”—and suddenly see sunset, winter, lovers cooking eggs in a grimy kitchen with the windows steaming up, river runs coldly by, little cats go clicking over the snow.

You have betrayed me, Eros.
You have sent me
my true love.
[…] All my life
I have worshiped the wrong gods.

the arrow in my heart
is like one of them,
swaying and quivering.
